To be a bit disappointed in Kate Middleton?

When visiting Fortnums, apparently she talked about what a struggle it is to make tea properly with "dried tea leaves". For someone who has not ever worked full time, had dependents or any particular constraints apart from media interest, I thought she might be a bit more interesting and competent. She still seems to spend her time giggline and hair flicking and being generally self conscious.

if I was her I'd be pleasantly bland in public, but a faggy leatherclad gin hag in private.

ajandjjmum · 03/03/2012 12:15

That's Camilla's role Sinical!

bringmesunshine2009 · 03/03/2012 12:22

Kate, mic you're reading, one piece on advice. NEVER forget the tea strainer.

*if, damn iPad

PeahenTailFeathers · 03/03/2012 12:24

YANBU. It would be nice to have a royal family that actually tries to live a semi-normal life, like the Dutch, or a genuinely beautiful royal couple, like they have in Bhutan. Unfortunately, we've got a bland, vacuous, dull group of overprivileged freeloaders people who don't seem to merit the adoration they allegedly receive according to the popular press (sorry, republican tendencies coming out there!) and have absolutely no idea what it's like to be a normal person.

motherinferior · 03/03/2012 12:31

Sometimes I've been quoted. I've always been held responsible. Even when my CEO said stupid things.

melika · 03/03/2012 12:35

maybe she's got pregnant head!

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2012 12:59

I too like to ascribe witticisms to her:

not just "fuck you, I like my eyeliner" but

"I married him for his big cock which you don't know about"

and "secretly me and Camilla are piss-heads"

Grin
noddyholder · 03/03/2012 13:01

I think she is quite dull in general.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2012 13:03

and "You think I'm boring but on Fridays I hang about on mumsnet and talk about bumsex"

TandB · 03/03/2012 13:05

Oh for goodness sake. The poor woman was making random chit-chat based on the situation she happened to be in at the time, ie she was drinking tea so she made a throwaway comment about tea.

It is the kind of remark I could easily see myself making if presented with a cup of "real" tea - I have no idea what to do with anything that doesn't come in a tea-bag.

How many people only ever converse about worthy, intellectual topics? I had a conversation about farting with someone I had never met about an hour ago.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/03/2012 13:05

I'd do my damndest to appear dull if I was under as much scrutiny as her.

motherinferior · 03/03/2012 13:07

And to give her her due, she's really really good at appearing dull. Fabulously good at it.

LadyWithEDS · 03/03/2012 13:32

It was a revenant comment for the circumstance she was in at that time.

I remember on her wedding day, when getting out of the carriage, the way she was about her dress, I saw a woman with very strong ideas about how she should be treated, where as in public she comes across IMHO as a weak woman, I think she is her Mother daughter and has a very strong will.

hocuspontas · 03/03/2012 13:48

I'm not up to date on the Royals - is she pregnant yet?

Mrsjay · 03/03/2012 13:52

I like her shes supposed to do small talk what is she meant to do discuss worl hunger while out for afternoon tea Confused she is a new royal doing a fine job of her public duties , however i find tetley in a bag makes a good cuppa Grin

LadyWithEDS · 03/03/2012 13:52

No announcement for a pregnancy has come from the Palace.

RaPaPaPumPumBootyMum · 03/03/2012 13:53

In think she was brought up to have great self belief.

And she married into the Royal family for the sake of Middleton family aspiration, especially Mum...

She won't care what a lot of ropey middle and working class MN plebs think about her.

She is so far above us all now Grin

Mrsjay · 03/03/2012 13:54

world*

LadyWithEDS · 03/03/2012 14:01

I don't often see people as happy and I think it's genuine, as Kate and her Mum seem to be.

Westcountrylovescheese · 03/03/2012 14:07

I personally am happy there has been no pregnancy announcement yet. She tried (and failed) to overshadow MY wedding. . Now I'm duffed up (thank you DH) I really don't want to suffer more comparison comments from apparent well-wishers. She should demurely keep her legs closed, for the time being at least.

Is that not reasonable?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/03/2012 14:35

Well clearly there are two women here:

The Duchess of Cambridge who is well-trained, poised, polite, well-behaved, uncontroversial and

Kate who is down-to-earth, natural, loves a giggle and a pint, will muck in when needed, in short a "game bird".

I would love to meet the real Kate. The Duchess not so much.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/03/2012 14:36

Oops I meant dull dull dull

painauchoc · 03/03/2012 14:41

I seriously hope I am never in the position where I am judged on my small talk. I am sure I would be considered severely lacking!

marriedinwhite · 03/03/2012 14:52

FWIW I think she's lovely, beautiful, well dressed, elegant, charming and a daughter, wife and Duchess to be proud of. Her family have been utterly dignified and having married in her late 20s she was mature enough to slip into the role, to reflect and listen to advice and clearly has.

On her own merits she attended an excellent university and met a very nice and well connected lad there. I hope they will be incredibly happy and have all the success, comfort and mutual love that William's parents failed to find.

I also think you have all been an uber critical lot today. She's lovely and at her age I would have loved her figure, her looks and most of all her hair.

Oh, and actually, the sort of tea that Fortnums sells, some of it for £100+ and ounce is so specialist and so beyond what you might pick up at Tescos that I think her comment was entirely justified.

Wonders whether to pop up to Piccadilly tomorrow to have a squirt of nice perfume in Fortnum's loos, buy some divine chocolates, and have tea in the Fountain Room with dd.
