to think that the animal that murdered Nikitta and her unborn child should swing

I am normally a peaceful soul, hate war, anti death penalty. But in this instance, the horror that killed that beautiful girl and her unborn baby should swing for his crime. Why should he get to enjoy life, at our expense? He will probably get an xBox and counselling. Makes me effing mad!

I agree!

TCOB · 22/02/2012 20:55

YABU - he shouldn't swing - but YANBU for feeling that he deserves to IYSWIM. The crime he has committed is one of the most upsetting, revolting things I have ever heard. I can't think of a punishment that could ever atone for such an evil evil act but just feel strongly that killing him would make nothing better and make it all just even worse Sad.

motherinferior · 22/02/2012 20:56

No. I don't believe in the death penalty for anyone.

EightiesChick · 22/02/2012 20:56

I am anti death penalty but there are definitely cases that push me very close and so I can totally see your point with this one. As TCOB said above, I don't think this but YANBU for thinking it.

MsVestibule · 22/02/2012 20:57

You're either anti-death penalty (as I am), or you're not. I'm not being callous, but there have been loads of horrific murders, so why has this particular murder changed your view?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 22/02/2012 20:58

When I heard this on the news I told DH I hoped some dreadful, unspeakable things happen to him in prison. Animal.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/02/2012 20:58

He'll be in prison for 35 years.
If I had the choice I would rather hang TBH.
And a fair few serial killers have made the same choice, think Fred West,Harold Shipman, Ian Brady who's constantly on hunger strike.
And there's the mass murderers such as Thomas Hamilton for the Dunblane killings and many more who kill themselves rather than face a life in prison.
That is my take on it anyway.
Many of these killers will choose suicide than life imprisonment.

squeakytoy · 22/02/2012 20:58

YANBU. He doesnt deserve to live.

feedmefeedmenow · 22/02/2012 21:00

the sooner the death penalty is reinstated, the better for everyone

oikopolis · 22/02/2012 21:00

i'm anti death penalty
but i understand the emotional response of wishing someone dead after they've committed a crime like that. awful.

hellhasnofury · 22/02/2012 21:00

I do know exactly what makes you feel that way, something happened locally that shocked the nation and touched my child's life personally but the calm, rational side of me cannot see how it is ok for us to say murder is wrong then kill someone because they've committed a murder. How is state sanctioned killing better than killing someone in cold blood?

messymammy · 22/02/2012 21:01

Yanbu
i fully support the death penalty for murder

rhondajean · 22/02/2012 21:03

I agree with tcob. I cannot condone any murder, state sponsored or otherwise. I understand the feeling and I do come close sometimes, this being one, but it's far more of a punishment of he is never released. Taking his life would make us as a nation as bad as him.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/02/2012 21:04

I think death is too good for anyone that commits a serious crime. I can maybe understand why someone would want the death penalty for murderers if they are religious and believe they will be judged, but apart from that...?

tethersend · 22/02/2012 21:04

The state should never have the power to kill its citizens.

I'm all for bread and water and a leaky victorian style prison though, and letting him die quickly of natural causes.....

Although I'm torn about that too, part of me makes me wonder what is wrong with someone to make them do something like that. Again, as I'm not religious, I don't believe in "evil", something has made him (and others!) this way, be it nature or nurture.....?

tethersend · 22/02/2012 21:08

"Either we believe barley human filth like this should be punished or we don't. If we do, why not the ultimate punishment? "

I think it's a little churlish to equate life imprisonment with state sanctioned killing, swc. They are worlds apart- there are many objections to the death penalty, of which wrongful conviction is just one.

My own view is that we as a society should aim to be more civilised than a murderer. I also, as I said above, do not think the state should be allowed to kill its citizens for any reason at all.

I am definitely anti death penalty. I guess this particular murder was so horrific as it involved an unborn child and he knew she was pregnant and it seemed so premeditated. It made me question my ideals and whether or not some people just deserve to die, because the crime is so horrific, just allowing them to breathe doesn't seem fair.

Prisons may have Xboxes but they are still pretty grim places. Can you imagine being banged up with some of the other unspeakably vile and inhuman creatures that are in those high security jails? Eeewwww!

We are led to believe that the likes of Ian Huntley are banged up in solitary for 23.5 hours a day but he still seems to manage to get attacked by other inmates. He also tries to take his own life whenever he gets the chance so he must be feeling pretty wretched - and rightly so the freak!! Angry

My point is, that death is an easy way out for these people. I think that often they do suffer more rotting in jail.

hadagutsfull · 22/02/2012 21:17

YANBU - am glad he got a long sentence on the one hand, but why should we have to pay for him to be kept in comfort for all those years?

troisgarcons · 22/02/2012 21:18

YOU arent God, YOU cant judge

Perriwinkle · 22/02/2012 21:18

I do agree though that killing them off would be far more cost effective from a public purse perspective!

dreamingbohemian · 22/02/2012 21:18

Not being British, may I ask: do they not have life imprisonment in the UK? I don't seem to ever see it given. Why not?

In the US he would have most likely gotten the death penalty if the state allows it, life imprisonment otherwise.

I'm a big leftie but I don't generally have a problem with the death penalty for rape-murder IF the evidence is as solid as it was in this case. I feel the same about people who kill children. I wouldn't really agitate for the death penalty, but I'm not going to object if it's given, iykwim.
