to think that the animal that murdered Nikitta and her unborn child should swing

I am normally a peaceful soul, hate war, anti death penalty. But in this instance, the horror that killed that beautiful girl and her unborn baby should swing for his crime. Why should he get to enjoy life, at our expense? He will probably get an xBox and counselling. Makes me effing mad!

I do not believe in the death penalty for anyone.

And you can't possibly be "definitely anti death penalty" going by your thread title and OP.

Rehabilitation is impossible for child abusers and sadistic sex offenders. Quite simply, what turns a person on can not be changed. It will only become more extreme.

I'm with Saggy by the way - if anyone hurt my children I would spend my seeking revenge. There would be nothing else to live for.

ReallyTired: "I also think it would make junors less willing to convict if they knew they were sending a person to the gallows on very strong evidence. It is very hard to kill someone you have actually met and know to be human even if they are vile."

Data from Canada bear that out. I was once assured by a retired solicitor that the same had happened in Britain, but I haven't found anything on google got any citations.

^The overall conviction rate for first-degree murder doubled in the
decade following abolition (from under 10% to approximately
20%),suggesting that Canadian juries are more willing to convict
for murder now that they are not compelled to make life-and-death
decisions.^

In the case of Colin Stagg and others like him, thank goodness we do not have the death penalty

Exactly.

I can't say I'm overly sorry when I hear of some high-profile murderer taking his own life though.

I am a bit Hmm at some of the statements on here that say that hopefully they'll be sorted out in prison etc... And what kinds of people do you think will be giving these evil murderers a good seeing to in prison? Nice fine upstanding members of society just out to enact their own moral justice? good men who just want the right thing doing by that woman and child? Or perhaps sadistic violent criminals who want to gain the recognission for having "done over the evil bastard who murdered that woman and child innit." while themselves serving time for some probably equally hideous offense..

KatAndKit · 23/02/2012 12:23

Very good point WannaBe.

sozzledchops · 23/02/2012 14:04

he deserves to but i can't condone the death penalty as long as there is corruption, inequality and room for error.

grumblinalong · 23/02/2012 14:15

Yep wannabe those meting out justice will be the same kind of people. Criminals who love enacting violence on someone else, who do it because they enjoy hurting people, not because they have a strong moral inner core.

Do you really think a victim of a serious violent/sexual crime would want or need a parent or spouse exacting their revenge on the perpertrator? You wouldn't want your family member ending up in prison, you wouldn't want them to stoop to the level of a violent criminal and you wouldn't want them placing themselves in danger. It might make the family member feel better for a nanosecond but I can assure you it wouldn't make the victim feel any better nor would it change the fact that a person who you loved has been hurt or killed.

If the attacker was hung it wouldn't change what has happened to you or your family member. It wouldn't make the images you have burned into your memory go away. It wouldn't help you.

StealthPenguin · 23/02/2012 17:08

I don't believe in the death penalty. However, I am all for prisons being enclosed spaces with no access to television, the phone or the internet. With the very basics of food to get you through.

I always think back to when I first read The Shawshank Redemption. In it the narrator describes a Gaol system where you were handed a shovel and, from sunrise to sunset, dug a hole. At sunset, you hopped in and the guards fitted a grill over the top of it. You were given a bucket to piss in and that same bucket would be the bucket you'd use to bail out your cell whenever it rained. My first thought when I read that was "I can think of at least three murderers that deserve this treatment".

McHappyPants2012 · 23/02/2012 17:18

I hope he fucking rots and every single day filled with misery.

I have been following this story for a year now, as it is very local.

Rip nikkita and baby kelsey-May justice finally done.

EdnaClouds · 23/02/2012 17:22

You must not kill and to punish you for killing I will..........kill you. Doesn't really work.

FlangelinaBallerina · 25/02/2012 08:18

I hate the way we always end up talking about the killers when something like this happens. It's always about them, because they're just so important. Fuck them, they're nothing. When that waste of organs went on a shooting spree in Cumbria a while back, one of the papers the next day had photos of his victims on the front page and little potted biographies, instead of him. Good.
