Cassettetapeandpencil no thank you Thanks spero I have seen you comments on other threads and you are always very angry, this is a discussion which you may agree or disagree on calm down Brew

Iaint to suggest that Christianity is the one religion that gets blamed for everything makes you look like you have a persecution complex. Lots of other religions get blamed for stuff.

Spero · 20/02/2012 23:40

Crunchy has explained perfectly clearly why she thinks it's ok. You disagree with her. That doesn't make her ignorant.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:40

CrunchFrog there are other schools you know.

Thanks for your concern kansas, I am certainly annoyed but not angry enough to merit any concern for my well being.

But nice to see some of that Christian compassion finally peeking out.

breatheslowly · 20/02/2012 23:42

Iaint how do you know what schools are available on the area that Crunchy lives in?

CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:44

You can believe whatever you want. I would never presume to suggest otherwise. You can force your children into your religion. I will tolerate religion, and hope that in our society people always have the freedom to choose religion if that's what they want.

But to force my kids into religion, to force me to listen to proselytising and hell fire while out and about minding my own business... to send your ministers into schools to attempt to indoctrinate, to have your bishops making laws, in place through no merit other than sufficient belief in a god, to have women denied bodily autonomy because your god feels that abortion is a bad thing and your holy book says it's naughty...

All of that and more means no, I will not "respect" religion or the religious.

Spero · 20/02/2012 23:44

Cassette, sadly I judge from what appears to be the majority. But I will eagerly await the morning when no doubt your prayers and direct line access to the mighty ear of god will have worked it's miracles and I will be Saved!

Maybe save your breath on that one.

breatheslowly how would you describe the other posts on this thread?? I am discussing a very specific subject, and so far people have raised the subject of their children's RE syllabus , articles on Christians etc....?? and your saying I have a a persecution complexHmm

OP posts:
CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:46

OP, no, there aren't other schools. That's the POINT. My children are at an integrated school, not a faith school. The other choices are the Roman Catholic school, or the heavily protestant State School, both of which are covered by the SAME LAW. The one that states that RE has to be about Christianity, written by the churches.

breatheslowly I don't know what schools are available in Crunchys area, but then again I do know her child's school syllabus because it really relates to the thread right?

tethersend · 20/02/2012 23:47

Using 'Christ' in this way is not the same as attacking a religion.

The English language is beyond your control.

Saying 'bastard' or 'cunt' is no longer simply an illegitimate child or a vagina; the words do not refer to their original meaning alone. It's the same with 'Christ'; it signifies something other than a Christian prophet; although edam makes a good point in that it is not a completely arbitrary signifier, but is also testament to the influence of Christianity on society and language.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:49

Crunchy then that is an issue that you local council should be addressing because there should be a choice,or a move may be in order.

OP posts:
CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:50

iaint so you didn't actually want to know why individual people might feel that it's OK to use language that conceivably might offend a couple of people who happen to be part of the organisation that has power, money and influence and no fear of persecution?

OK then. YANBU, everyone should respect your right to have your specific god spoken about respectfully at all times, despite what your religion has done and is doing in society.

ComposHat · 20/02/2012 23:50

Because to mock people because of differences if beliefs/skin colour/size/age/race/sexual orientation is ignorant

This is the absolute nub of the debate, mocking/questioning/interrogating someone's religious beliefs than mocking their ethnicity. The former is acceptable (almost essential I'd say, especially in the UK here the established church wields a disproportionate influence) whereas the latter is abhorrent. Ethnicity is a 'given' and an integral part of someone's identity: no one wakes up and thinks: 'Today I am going to be South East Asian.'

However a religious belief is something that an adult has chosen to subscribe to and should expect them to be critically examined. I chose to subscribe to the creeds of democratic socialism and vegetarianism, but don't want or need special protection for these views, neither should Christians. People should be free to call me a 'bleeding heart lefty' or a 'lettuce muncher' to their hearts content.

I see no fundamental difference between me deeply and sincerely held views and that of a religious person.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:50

tethersend where in the thread did i say i wanted to do this?

OP posts:
breatheslowly · 20/02/2012 23:50

When it comes to blasphemy, for rather obvious reasons the references are all Christian and therefore this thread is basically about christianity. It would be weird if someone had come onto the thread and said "YANBU, but here is a random comment about Hinduism" But Christianity is not blamed for everything outside this thread.

CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:51

It's LAW in Northern Ireland. Which is part of the UK. You think the solution to indoctrination is to leave the country? LMAO.

There are no secular schools in Northern Ireland.

Spero · 20/02/2012 23:51

I agree to the agreeing to disagree.

Perhaps I have been sent to test you. The lord does indeed move in mysterious ways.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:52

ComposHat and do you see anyone mocking your chosen belief, you have evry right to believe what you want, where as i don't have the right to mock you. So why do you feel the right to do so??
