But you are ignoring the centuries of history, culture and politics that have led to people using words in this way. People didn't start saying 'Christ' when something goes wrong yesterday. Blimey goes back centuries!

CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 22:53

cassette why must people show respect to religion?

Why does religion trump any other opinion or belief?

Spero · 20/02/2012 22:54

You do realise that 'flipping heck' is an example of a 'minced oath' and is used in substitution for 'Fucking hell'.

So would it be ok if I said 'Jiminy Cricket on a bike'?

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:18

sozzledchops thats a conversation you need to have with your parents, and as an adult you are free to make your own choices so what is the connection??

edam no I am not, but we are discussing present day. If every discussion was from a historical perspective, we would be here all day.

No.

Respect is earned not demanded.

I don't respect religious people.

I don't burn your mosques, temples or synagogues. I don't stop you doing whatever the fuck you want provided you do not step over the line and deny me my human rights.

So I will carry on saying Christ on a bike and if it offends you, suck it up or get god to send another flood or whatever.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:28

what Cassettetapeandpencil said, I could not have put it better.Christianity is not a mock free for all. It seem to be the one religion that is blamed for EVERYTHING. But let as look at our selves as individuals, we are all responsible for our own actions and we have the right to have our beliefs or non belief. It is about having respect for other people whether you agree with them or not.

YABU

What happened to the old, hard Christians who didn't mind getting burnt at the stake or being fed to Lions for the amusement of the Romans? Suddenly you are getting all prissy about us godless heathens taking the Lord's name in vain.

Religion is a belief system, like any other, people adopt it of their own free will and should expect others to question it , parody it or lampoon it. If you want to get offended, that's your look out, but you have no divine right (no pun intended) to go through life with no one saying anything that offends you.

Is your faith so weak that it is shaken by atheists/agnostics like me using phrases like 'Christ on a bike?' or 'Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans' as mild signs of exasperation or surprise.

CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:33

I don't think it's naive. I don't understand why I ought to respect religion.

I don't understand why that set of beliefs is more important than any other.

(And what Spero said.)

Spero · 20/02/2012 23:33

I have just been reading a very interesting article about a teenage girl in America who objected to a prayer mural at her school. She was subjected to horrific bullying from Christians, including politicians in her state.

Every. Single. Day. I can read about some horrible act of petty hatred or even worse perpetrated by religious people on those who don't share their beliefs.

When religious people start apologising to me, I'll mind my language a little more.

BreadForMyBREADGUN · 20/02/2012 23:33

My favourite is 'Jesus tapdancing CHRIST!'

(sorry)

:)

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 23:34

ImperialBlether 'can't stand' LeBeauReve i think half the time people just say it for the sake of saying it. there are so many other words.

Cassette, so sorry you feel irked. Would you like me to link to the article about this poor girl from Rhode Island? Might help you gain a greater understanding and compassion, things your religion is supposedly celebrated for.

4madboys · 20/02/2012 23:37

yabu, i often say for christs sake or oh my god or just oh god, i realised at the weekend that ds3 and ds4 say 'oh god' as well, when my mil told them off for doing so and 'saying the lords name in vain' i rolled my eyes rather a lot at that comment. my children said it in context and it is an alternative to swearing, it doesnt bother me at all and i was brought up going to church, sunday school etc. i am not religious now and simply tell my children about all faiths and beliefs, they can choose to believe what they want and they can take the lords name in vain all day long as far as i am concerned.

CrunchyFrog · 20/02/2012 23:37

Why is your religious belief more important, and more deserving of respect, than my belief that relgion ought to be removed from schools, and ought to be challenged at every turn?

Oh, BTW, to answer your question about why it is Christianity that is "attacked,"

I live in rural Northern Ireland. Last time I saw a person of a religion other than Christian of one kind or another was last time I visited London. Most of the problems in NI are religion based. Our education system, rights and Assembly hugely overemphasise Christianity.
My children, who currently have no religion, as they are children, are force fed christianity at school BY LAW.

Spero · 20/02/2012 23:38

O I like Jesus tap-dancing Christ! That has a lovely rhythm to it. Maybe it is time to retire the bike.

pictish · 20/02/2012 23:38

I say Christ and Jesus as terms of exasperation and outrage.
I say "Cherrrrrr-ist!" all emphatic like.

Don't like it?
Sing.

Here's the syllabus. BTW, my kids are withdrawn from the specific RE lessons, but religion pervades the education system.
