Why not post this in a more appropriate topic.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/02/2012 20:55

I really don't like it either and I don't have a religious bone in my body.

However, I am sure most people who use it don't think its cool, they are most likely swearing without thinking.

HaveYouTakenLeaveOfYourCervix · 20/02/2012 20:56

I also like Jesus H Christ.

I'd like to know what the H stands for though.

Grockle · 20/02/2012 20:58

I really dislike it. Don't know why - I'm pagan. My family say 'Oh, god' all the time and it makes me cringe. I keep quiet and assume IABU - if I'm bothered, it's my problem not theirs.

clarabellabunting · 20/02/2012 20:58

Holy?

somedayma · 20/02/2012 20:58

You can get Fenton T-shirts now

Technodad · 20/02/2012 20:59

Doesn't the H stand for "himself"?

bruxeur · 20/02/2012 20:59

H stands for Hagrid. JK Rowling has a lot to answer for...

are there any swear words that don't offend? Surely the clue is in the title??? ffs

RedHotPokers · 20/02/2012 21:00

But surely expressions like 'for Gods Sake' and 'for Christs sake (Chrissake)' are not offensive. I'm pretty sure they've been used for centuries. I would have have thought they were almost like a small prayer IYSWIM ('for the sake of God').

How do you feel about 'minced oaths' OP:

darn or dang instead of damn
heck instead of hell
goodness, golly, gosh instead of God
gee, geesh, geez, geeze, or jeez instead of Jesus
oh my word instead of oh my Lord
crikey or cripes instead of Christ ??

tethersend · 20/02/2012 21:00

Many words have a dual meaning; Christ is just one of them. Bollocks, cunt and bastard are other good examples.

George Orwell describes it best:

^The whole business of swearing, especially English swearing, is
mysterious. Of its very nature swearing is as irrational as magic--
indeed, it is a species of magic. But there is also a paradox about it,
namely this: Our intention in swearing is to shock and wound, which we do
by mentioning something that should be kept secret--usually something to
do with the sexual functions. But the strange thing is that when a word is
well established as a swear word, it seems to lose its original meaning;
that is, it loses the thing that made it into a swear word. A word becomes
an oath because it means a certain thing, and, because it has become an
oath, it ceases to mean that thing. For example, 'fuck'. The Londoners do not
now use, or very seldom use, this word in its original meaning; it is on
their lips from morning till night, but it is a mere expletive and means
nothing. Similarly with 'bugger', which is rapidly losing its original sense.^

^Words used as insults seem to be governed by the same paradox as swear
words. A word becomes an insult, one would suppose, because it means
something bad; but m practice its insult-value has little to do with its
actual meaning. For example, the most bitter insult one can offer to a
Londoner is 'bastard'--which, taken for what it means, is hardly an
insult at all. And the worst insult to a woman, either in London or Paris,
is 'cow'; a name which might even be a compliment, for cows are among the
most likeable of animals. Evidently a word is an insult simply because it
is meant as an insult, without reference to its dictionary meaning; words,
especially swear words, being what public opinion chooses to make them.^

IHaveMichaelMcintyresHair · 20/02/2012 21:07

Surely people should just say things like Crumbs! and Lawks! to vent frustration. What is the world coming to?

Spuddybean · 20/02/2012 21:13

well i am not particularly tolerant of anyone's religious beliefs and i think people are too precious about 'offensive' words.

i use christ because i grew up as a cultural christian. I would probably use another word if i grew up in another culture. It isn't chosen because i have more respect for one religion or more consideration for another persons faith. I have equal disdain for them all.

ForkInTheForeheid · 20/02/2012 21:14

YANBU to be offended, you don't have to like it but people will say it regardless. What I don't get is the asterisks! You're not using it as a swear word, surely typing Christ is not going to offend your beliefs in any way? Very odd.

Bogeyface · 20/02/2012 21:15

My personal favourite is Jesus H Corbett :o

But in answer, no I dont think anyone thinks its cool, some people say it and others dont. Its the same as the way some people use the word cunt and others dont.

Being professionally offended is rather boring for everyone else.
