There are plenty of things that the church have pushed on people in society, and if all you have to worry about is someone using the word "Christ", you are probably doing quite well.

tethersend · 20/02/2012 21:20

Being offended is the point though, surely?

If nobody was offended, the word would be replaced by a more offensive one.

It's purpose is to offend- albeit mildly.

Bogeyface · 20/02/2012 21:25

I have also been known to say 'Jesus, Mary and Joseph'

I hope you are Irish SB! My very Irish friend says it and it sounds great, a real "OH FFS!!!" but when her DH says it, who has lived in Ireland for years but still has our local accent, it just sounds wrong. Infact, it sounds like he is taking the piss :o

I grew up hearing "oh (my) god, Jesus (H) Christ and for christsake. I've probably said them all at some point, even inserted a fucking at times. The one I use most tends to be oh, god. No better no worse than other swear words, tbh I never really thought of them as swear words in the way that bastard/fuck are

ChaoticAngel · 20/02/2012 21:32

Is hell considered a swear word?

SnapesMistress · 20/02/2012 21:36

I have been known to say "Jesus wept" when disgusted by something. Surely I am just saying that Jesus would disapprove?

Am an atheist anyway and love swearing so don't care even if you are offended.

PopcornBiscuit · 20/02/2012 21:42

YANBU

whackamole · 20/02/2012 21:45

YABU. I wouldn't be offended if someone said 'oh for whackamole's sake' and truly don't see the difference.

But I am not religious.

muminthecity · 20/02/2012 21:50

YAB a bit silly. Why all the *? Are you not allowed to even type the words Jesus or Christ?

I don't use them much myself, prefer a good for fuck's sake, rather than Christ's.

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 21:55

Its the way it said, it is said to offend, and it is disrespectful.Ii is funny I have never heard anyone say a*h. Deadsouls I am so silly that you took the tIme to post.

It is good to hear all your views and the reasons people say it. But I hear people say it in the same breath as swear words and I find that disrespectful.I did not say it is a swear word, I said it is used like one.

kissmyheathenass · 20/02/2012 21:56

'Holy cunting cow' I have never heard that one! I love it!!
WRT original question, I dont consider it blaspheming. Its just been assimilated into our language now. It shouldnt cause offence although my (religious) Dad tells ds off when he says "For Christs Sake... Out of respect for my Dad, I tell ds to watch what he says.

Tim Minchins Pope Song sums it up for me.

WillowFae · 20/02/2012 21:58

I used to think the 'H' stood for Horatio. Don't know why!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity

"The term "profane" originates from classical Latin "profanus", literally "before (outside) the temple". It carried the meaning of either "desecrating what is holy" or "with a secular purpose" as early as the 1450s CE[4]. Profanity represented secular indifference to religion or religious figures, while blasphemy was a more offensive attack on religion and religious figures, considered sinful, and a direct violation of The Ten Commandments."

Serendipity30 · 20/02/2012 21:59

The issue is not people using the Christian words in a derogatory way. Technodad I am not discussing views on the Church and Christianity, I think your on the wrong thread, calm down

And the atheists will attack in 5,4,3,2,1

"Its the way it said, it is said to offend, and it is disrespectful"

Then it works very well for its intended purpose.

Don't ever go to french Canada then OP - they have a whole series of religion based ways of swearing, my favourite is "tabernac!"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_French_profanity#List_of_common_sacres

sozzledchops · 20/02/2012 22:03

Well I never asked to be baptised, sent to a religious school, made my first, confession, communion etc. I think all that earns me the right to use those words if I want and I don't say these words to offend they just seem more harmless then some and are ingrained I suppose.

RachelWalsh · 20/02/2012 22:03

Not that I say tabernac, not being Québécois myself, that might confuse people somewhat.

SuchProspects · 20/02/2012 22:05

"The issue is not people using the Christian words in a derogatory way." ??? Hmm then what is it about OP?

nobodyspecial · 20/02/2012 22:06

I never use the name Jesus Christ as an expletive. I'm not Christian. I think it's used as a cry out for help, rather than swearing? I don't know.

I say "oh my God" alot - my Dad hates it, so did my Mum. Apparantly it's really bad? My daughter has often come home from nursery and told me not to say it anymore as it's bad. Some girl has been telling her. I felt so low. We don't swear in our house.

Technodad · 20/02/2012 22:07

iaintfromkansas

Don't worry, I am not going to go off thread, I just think it is worth putting it in perspective. It probably isn't worth getting upset about it as it isn't usually meant to offend, but just to express exasperation nowadays.

Now the Tim Minchin song - I can imagine upsetting people, but that song is meant to make people think, so is designed to stop you in your tracks. My favourite line when he sings "you are a ...." alright, I won't go there Smile.
