to think council shouldn't pay for lollypop lady outside private school?

is this not the council subsidising private education? Just annoys me to see all the massive 4 x 4s dropping pfbs and then there's a lollypop lady there laid on by the council? Shouldn't the school organise one themselves?

NoWay I hope you're not suggesting the sick kids get to an NHS hospital if they've become sick by breathing in germs from a public school Angry

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 20/02/2012 16:26

YABVU. Massively unreasonable in fact.

They are still children! Children whose parents pay council tax the same as everyone else. Except they probably pay more tax because they have higer incomes and sometimes live in bigger houses. That doesn't entitle them to more from the council, but it certainly doesn't entitle them to any less either.

Frontpaw · 20/02/2012 16:28

We have had 2 kids get run over near our school (killed). No lollypop person. The council said that this junction is not an accident blackspot (so how many children need to be killed exactly?). No crossing, school signs or even a bloody zebra crossing.

However, the state school nearby has zebra, school street signs, zig zags outside the door, huge signs painted on the street and 2 lollopop people. There have been no fatalities there for years.

Why does it matter is the school is state or private?

And we walk to school. Thrrrrrrrrup (since we dont have a raspberry smiley - Mumsnet - Can we have one please?)

MainlyMaynie · 20/02/2012 16:31

As well as being bizarre, you don't know about the budget. Lollipop service could have its budget devolved to schools and be bought back as a service from the council. The private school could also be buying the service, which the council makes a profit on, thus subsidising road safety for state schools.

RuleBritannia · 20/02/2012 16:31

The loolipop man/woman is outside the school. Anyway, a volunteer from the school would have no right to stop traffic the way the council-employed one has a right.

Agincourt · 20/02/2012 16:34

gosh they work for what, an hour a day, weekdays, term time only??? and you resent that cost? Jeez

GeekCool · 20/02/2012 16:36

This is one of the weirdest AIBU I've read. Are only certain children worthy of being looked after on our roads?
How do you hold yourself up with that massive chip on your shoulder OP?

Frontpaw · 20/02/2012 16:36

The way people drive around here, they'd need danger money.

WorraLiberty · 20/02/2012 16:37

But is it a sugar free lollipop?

This could make all the difference and sway opinion here

Agincourt · 20/02/2012 16:37

OP needs a shorter horse

LatteLady · 20/02/2012 16:39

You are being VU... do you think that these parents don't pay their council taxes so that they can send their children to this school? Oh FFS!

NoWayNoHow · 20/02/2012 16:39

Worra you're absolutely right, silly me - obviously they should be taken to a ward in a private hospital - oh, by limo of course.

Grin
DurhamDurham · 20/02/2012 16:39

It could be worse, she could be waving a giant Fruitshoot bottle to stop the traffic.

suebfg · 20/02/2012 16:42

YABU - all children deserve to be safe. Get over your prejudices.

Queenofcake · 20/02/2012 16:42

OMG - is this for real?????

Really - let the "rish kids" die on the road??????

Shock
GandTiceandaSprout · 20/02/2012 16:43

Those children do not matter then, eh. Hmm

Backinthebox · 20/02/2012 16:43

Looks to me like nestynest is a one-shot, MN-bingo, lob the controversial subject in poster.

Don't feed it.....!!!

McHappyPants2012 · 20/02/2012 16:49

Yabu it keeps children safe

bumbez · 20/02/2012 16:51

YABU

We have to cross near our local private school and the attached lollipop man is a miserable fucker - I have no idea if he is paid by the school or the council but I assume school as he seems really unwilling to help us cross.

I prefer to cross at the traffic lights even though it takes ages to wait for the green man!

Sometimes I drive and dream of mowing him down the cunt!

'Shouldn't the school organise one themselves? Perhaps they did. How do you know who pays the bill?

I think you know by now YABU.

Primrose123 · 20/02/2012 17:44

Not all children in private schools have 'rich' parents. Some have scholarships, some have well-off grandparents who want to do something for the grandchildren, some have two parents who work full-time, and can just about manage the fees if they scrimp and save elsewhere.

yellowraincoat · 20/02/2012 17:50

What we need to do, Primrose123, is to have the children coming in at staggered times. So the povvos get to school between 8.20 and 8.40, and there will be a lollipop person who then clocks off and the rich Tories can arrive, either providing their own lollipop person (which they can damn well afford, the bastards) or running the gamut of the crossing as they see fit.

Bastards.

Dawndonna · 20/02/2012 18:37

I taught in an independent school, years ago. The caretaker was also the lollipop man, paid for by the school, although those using the patrol but not attending the school would not have known that.

Rhinosaurus · 20/02/2012 18:45

Even if it did come out of the LA budget YABU, just because the parents have opted out of state education doesn't mean they are not entitled to other services, they pay council tax the same as everyone else.
