"I'm not racist but..."

There seems to be a lot of people on here who don't seem to realise that racism is a crime. They justify it by saying they know someone who is [insert whatever] or by claiming that they are pointing out differences not being prejudiced.

Over the last week I have been horrified by a number of diverse threads where casual racism is hardly even noted.

African midwives, Americans, Australians, Gypsies... IT IS NOT OK PEOPLE.

Please, Mumsnetters, enough is enough.

AIBU to request that we should ALL be standing up to racists and stop apologising for and accepting casual racism?

I have one dd now still in school. It's totally racially mixed and she has many friends of all creeds and colours.

I over heard one of her sikh friends say to her, ' been there, done that got the turban'

My dd as she was drooling over her jls Callander asked me,' why are black guys do much sexier than white guys!

Another friend asked a lad in the class if he fancied her and he said no, she said, 'is it cos I is black ' she's mixed race.

They joke about colour and religion all the time, no bullying, no angst about is it ok to say this or that!

How lovely.

I am not trying to defend myself I wanted just point out that the majority of racist comments that I hear in my area are from catholic parents - some of them are truly religious and some others have been attending the church just to get a place at the local catholic school. And they are so proud to have their children there and be at the church every sunday that I find it it unbelievable they have the courage to say things like that.

I tried to make it clear that I wasn't bashing the catholic people but yes I think the catholic faith has got prejudice against few people in society (homossexuals for example) but than as some one pointed out I might be ignorant regarding Catholicism.

Anyway is hard for me to express my ideas in a foreign language, it is my 6th year as an english language learner, wish I was doing better.

You can't just make hateful sweeping statements about people who follow a particular religion and blame a language problem when people get cross. Your meaning is completely clear. You think Catholics as a group are racist homophobes. You say this in spite of Catholic schools often being the most ethnically diverse in an area due to both the global nature of the church and due to many parents of minority faiths preferring Catholic schools to schools which don't follow a faith (in the absence of a school which is allied to their faith). I don't believe the comments were made. I think you are lying. There is no way in the world that mass going Catholics would be surprised to see brown people at their children's schools. They will have been sitting with them in mass their whole lives. There are over a billion Catholics, we are not one person with one ideal, we are not one ethnicity, we do not all speak the same language, we are not all heterosexual. Neither are we all nice or good or meek. You can't put us all in the same box an make casual remarks about how hypocritical and bigoted we all are. You judge us as a homogeneous mass then hide behind a language barrier.

i thnk bashing the christian faith is considered perfectly acceptable on MN

so many people looking to judge other people for everythng and anything and not just stopping to look at themselves and the type of person this makes them.

Serendipity30 · 19/02/2012 09:47

eeer you do realise the Muslim faith is against gay relationships, contraception, and abortion as well etc, ......... , or are you just going to focus on Christians and bash them as usual.

Serendipity30 · 19/02/2012 09:49

There are so many Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities Catholics, WORLDWIDE.You cannot base your views on your town, city or village. Ridiculous

Serendipity30 · 19/02/2012 09:50

" There seems to be a lot of people on here who don't seem to realise that racism is a crime "
