"I'm not racist but..."

There seems to be a lot of people on here who don't seem to realise that racism is a crime. They justify it by saying they know someone who is [insert whatever] or by claiming that they are pointing out differences not being prejudiced.

Over the last week I have been horrified by a number of diverse threads where casual racism is hardly even noted.

African midwives, Americans, Australians, Gypsies... IT IS NOT OK PEOPLE.

Please, Mumsnetters, enough is enough.

AIBU to request that we should ALL be standing up to racists and stop apologising for and accepting casual racism?

are they not?

fallenpetal · 16/02/2012 23:14

I think its a reflection on life now...when I was a kid you could use the n word and no one batted an eyelid, I was often called honkey ( a term for white people) Now we have mostly wised up to prejudice but are still often ignorant of other cultures, lifestyles and religions and there is often a backlash if tolerance is taught in school with some explanation of the differences.
So to ask question, discuss confusions or to get round ignorance the sentence starts with "I'm not racist but" instead of "do you know why"

Sad, I hate it, but I dont think its always intentionally racist

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:14

Sississy - you are kidding me now. I'm catholic and my kids won't be going to the catholic school (ie this means there are Catholics in non catholic schools). There are also non Catholics in catholic schools. I can't believe you've said what you said.

If those quotes are even genuine then I hope to God that I don't live in your area because I won't be able to tolerate such ignorance. And stupidity.

ComposHat · 16/02/2012 23:19

There's two things I hate in life: racism and Australians.

In fact I can't be a racist as I Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2 on video.

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:20

Go back to my posts cassette. I made sure I made clear I was talking about a small group in my area to happened to claim they are catholics, attend the catholic church and send their children to the local catholic school

Every group is full of predudice.

Catholics are jjust as capable of being bigotted as anyone else. Newsflash, its not just white God believing people who have racist people in their ranks. Black people can be racist too. Muslims can be racist. etc

But to say that because you heard a Catholic being racist means that they must all be predudice is a massive assumption and quite wrong.

no drcrab I am not kidding and the only experience I have about catholic schools was when I went to my local one to ask for the form we have to fill and the person and the office told me not to bother een doing an application as I would not have a chance (DD was baptized in CoE because of Dh's family), so I told her I tought I had the right to apply as it was one of the 5 in my catchment area and she said I was gonna waste my time and choices.

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:27

and DD is now in a lovely community school and is very happy

tethersend · 16/02/2012 23:27

ComposHat Grin

I'm a fan of Saying or doing isn't racist because I know someone who's black/Asian/Chinese and they aren't bothered by it.

And I love it when the 'professionally offended' get mentioned.

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:29

hi casseta I asked you because I thought you were taking the piss as I said before than you that i eas christian but not catholic

LynetteScavo · 16/02/2012 23:30

Awww, not Americans? Really?

How about the Welsh?

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:32

and the catholic faith are full of prejudice, I said FAITH not people
against gays, people who have sex before marriage, people who uses contaception, women who does abortion...

tethersend · 16/02/2012 23:32

I live in a hugely Asian area and opposite a Catholic school. I have had a number of parents (neighbours, DD's nursery) tell me that they send their kids there because there are no Asians and I should get DD baptised and do the same.

This doesn't mean that all Catholics are racist. It just means that some racist parents will opt for a Catholic school in order to avoid their child mixing with other races/religions.

sississy · 16/02/2012 23:32

and yes I was talking about few people in my community

drcrab · 16/02/2012 23:33

What the receptionist was saying might be right based on her knowledge of the school selection process in your LA. Nothing to do with whether you are religious or catholic! Fwiw we are probably on the 'yes' list for the catholic school but we didn't put it as first choice for various reasons. Friends of ours have put it higher than us and they are not catholic.

Maybe those comments did come from catholic people but it was from ignorance rather than religion. Ignorance comes in many guises, colors, ages and religions.

I knew there'd be one. Thank fuck the original's gone.

swanker · 16/02/2012 23:35

I'm not prejudiced.

I hate everyone.

Wink
drcrab · 16/02/2012 23:36

You are extrapolating. Seriously. Think of all your comments. They don't make sense when you string them together. Dd is in a lovely community school. Ok great. Does that mean the catholic school isn't 'lovely'? And if it's not lovely is it because of the ignorant parents in that school? Or are there more genuine reasons why it's not lovely? You don't make sense.

drcrab · 16/02/2012 23:38
