to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Thanks Nilgirl, Mandatory Work Activity without an end date thats the one. I can't see how they would be able to get insurancetbh.

The link that was posted defining all the groups and were they fall, mandatory or voluntary, I found a bit to confusing to decipher. if I understood any of it correctly, it also said that in a joint claim if one half of the couple were due to start mandatory work, then the partner even if it was optional for x mths before becoming mandatory would also become mandatory. Confused.

Could someone have a look

Oh that is very interesting, peekabooby. Nice find.

Particularly fascinating is the line in Annex A, table for Mandatory ESA participants.

Participant: ESA (IR) WRAF with 12 Month + Prognosis
Entry/Access Point: Optional from WCA outcome
Opportunity/Claimant Group: WP ESA (IR) WRAG 12Mth Mandatory
Participation: Mandatory

and further down:

WP ESA (IR) WRAG 12Mth Mandatory ? Optional entry from the point at which the outcome of the claimant?s WCA is known: ESA Income Related (IR) WRAG participants who as a result of their WCA have been given a prognosis of 12 months+ and have opted to enter the WP (this grouping may also include a proportion of participants who previously received Incapacity Benefit).

IIUC correctly this translates as follows.

People who have been put in the WRAG but are not expected to be Fit to Work for at least another 12 months can "opt" onto the Work Programme. Once on the Work Programme, they will be told that everything (manual work placements, "training") is mandatory.

And the government gets to claim it's all voluntary because of the "opt in". Substantial level of anecdote suggests JobCentre and Work Programme-type staff have a history of telling people verbally that "you have to sign here", sometimes with threats that benefit will be cut.

Which makes sense because if it's genuinely "opt in", why would they then need the mandate and threat of sanctions?

peekabooby · 21/02/2012 17:59

Can't take the credit Grin think it was posted upthread somewere. If you click on the underlined bit it takes you to a page with sanction reporting, have a look at the example Biscuit

Nilgiri · 21/02/2012 18:03

Oh is this the one with the woman sanctioned for not having nice nails, while the men were only sanctioned for not applying for jobs? I read that quickly last night.

peekabooby · 21/02/2012 18:07

Woman sanctioned for not attending a hair and beauty parlour to smarten up for interview and using the money for gas bill.

It is within that report.

peekabooby · 21/02/2012 18:31

Of the 279,000 people who took part in the flexible new deal 2009-2010, how many got a long-term job? The answer is 3,800.

Commercial spend with A4e for Contracted Employment Provision in 2009/10 (excluding recoverable VAT) was £130m. If VAT is added to give an overall spend the total in the period was £150m.

Thought you'd all like to know that you're all part of a 'disgusting anti-capitalist protest' according Grayling. He's just been on C4 news.

TOSSER!

NunOnTheRun · 21/02/2012 19:29

^Excellent. I'm not orange enough to appear on the X Factor Wink

minimathsmouse · 21/02/2012 20:20

I object to being called disgustingSmile
I think Mr Grayling is disgusting[sticks tongue out]

Is it possible to get C4 new on 4od, we don't have TV.

I loved the you tube film peekabooby. Going back to look at the guidelines because if this is right other people need to know because the profit chasers at A4e and others will make verbal threats. Video states that ingeus hide the small print from claimants on backs of forms.

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 20:25

So what was Jon Snows reaction to Graylings comments.?

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 21:18

What are they going to do about the people who have already been wrongfully sanctioned and suffered because of this.
When they offer someone the option of keeping benefits during placement or being paid a wage is it gonna be a genuine offer or is the claimant going to be leaned on behind closed doors to err towards doing it for benefits.
Claimants have already been effectively censored and gagged into staying silent as Huntycat mentioned upthread and lets not forget this is not the only scheme. There is also the Mandatory Work Activity which is mandatory. They cant wriggle out of that one cos its in the bloody title.

ChickenLickn · 21/02/2012 21:18

Nilgiri - apparently they are not allowed to go on the tills. NO TREATS FOR YOU WORK'OUSE!

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 21:23

sorry but i think its still not good enough.

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 21:28

boycott workfare have an update here. Theyve explained it better than i did.

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 21:32

It reads like tesco are still gonna do it but in a different way. All theyve done is faff around at the edges hoping the public will be fooled.

Nilgiri · 21/02/2012 21:39

Agreed, carer. I'm a cynical old bat, and my first thought was, "Tesco are trying to distract from the other Mandatory Work Scheme which, if Hunty is correct, they have been profiting from in one form or another for years."

Youngsters for 8 weeks are smaller fry than an experienced assistant manager working unpaid for months.

PeahenTailFeathers · 21/02/2012 21:43

I've read the Guardian news article from the link above and I see Chris Grayling has said that businesses don't receive any money for taking on work experience staff. Didn't someone upthread provide a link documenting the payouts to employers? I'm sure I remember reading that eg Tesco were given about £2200 for each worker.

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 21:51

Its finally made the news on a MAIN news channel Its gonna be on the itv news in ten mins after the Brit Awards.

PeahenTailFeathers · 21/02/2012 21:55

Now I've watched the Grayling interview on C4 news - he keeps saying "there's no evidence to show ..." whatever facts he doesn't like to hear in his interviews but who is he trying to convince ? The government has made such a shambles of this and denying it just makes it worse.

TalkinPeace2 · 21/02/2012 22:09

ON BBC1 NOW

carernotasaint · 21/02/2012 22:10

Ooh and i saw on twitter that Owen Jones who wrote Chavs,The Demonization of the Working Classes is going to be on Daybreak tomorrow discussing workfare.

banditqueen · 21/02/2012 22:14

Channel 4 news bit tonight - worth watching the Tesco clip and the Grayling interview straight after.

TapselteerieO · 21/02/2012 22:15

Peekabooby thanks for that link, I can't get over the numbers in your post Angry AngryAngry Angry.

Are there figures for how much the government has spent on all these workfare type programmes overall?
