to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Nil - there isn't much choice out there then is there? It's a case of the best of the worst as it's always been.

minimathsmouse · 17/02/2012 00:31

I agree, I wonder if any of these Cons know what they are doing. Part of me thinks they must be naive and not terribly clever but I suspect worse, they know exactly what they are doing.

The NHS bill is a case in point, I question whether they realise that competition can actually push prices up contrary to popular opinion. Then I think again and I'm sure that not only are they trying to privatise the NHS but they know full well how this will not only cost the country more but will lead to inequalities. I think the vast majority are just being wooed by big businesses and are keeping their post politics options open. ie offers of positions on boards of said companies.

molepom · 17/02/2012 00:35

I think they know EXACTLY what they are doing, I just wish I knew what they are planning for the end result.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, this country is run by big businesses and always has been, the Gov is just a stepping stone to a nice healthy big fat retirement to the select few and that is all they have in mind. It stinks.

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/02/2012 00:36

YY to molepom.
Though it's not just this country, it's the whole fucking world.

molepom · 17/02/2012 00:40

Agreed Lady, it is...I was just pointing out this country at this moment because to be honest, I havent given the rest of the world another thought. You're right though, it's all about money, big business, back scratching and every man for himself.

minimathsmouse · 17/02/2012 00:45

I think labour need to stop apologising for the last labour government. It seems that they are not ready to denounce the new labour project and unless they do they can't put up any opposition.

Tony and his cronnies laid the way for many of the cons policies, public/private partnerships, private health care companies commissioned to provide health care etc... contracting out local authority work, privatising social care. Subsidising low wages with tax credits rather than compelling employers to pay a living wage.

WetAugust · 17/02/2012 00:46

When you add in teh subsidies that the Govt is giving these multi-nationals by keeping the minimum wage so low that it has to b topped up by tax credits - we really are being screwed so companies can continue to make their vast profits instead of paying their workers a living wage. Angry

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/02/2012 01:13

Yes WetAugust, it all seems so simple and fair when we write it down in black and white, but nobody is listening.
We need a revolution. really, don't we?
I honestly believe that we no longer live in a democracy, because however we vote, all the power comes from multi national companies anyway.

garlicfrother · 17/02/2012 01:30

I honestly believe that we no longer live in a democracy, because however we vote, all the power comes from multi national companies anyway.

Couldn't agree more :(

Unfortunately I see no viable candidates to lead a revolution, either.
We should form a mumsnet consortium!

fuzzPigwickPapers · 17/02/2012 01:43

Shit. My DH has his ESA appeal next week, he has had a prolapsed disc (and various other complicating injuries from his past) for 18 months. If he loses he will be forced onto JSA, some of which will be taken away to pay back the ESA money.

I wonder what job they would make him do while he's on crutches and can't lift anything? Not office work either, he can't actually sit down for more than 2 minutes.

:( Angry

Nilgiri · 17/02/2012 02:41

fuzzPig, if you're working he may not get ESA even if he wins.

The Welfare Reform Bill is making contribution-based ESA one-year only (to encourage people to get better, you seeHmm), so if he's been off for 18 months, it will have "expired". They're planning to bring this in in April, and have already sent letters out to warn people - even though the fucking bill hasn't been passed yet.

At best he'll be eligible for means-tested ESA which is lower and, of course, means-tested.

Sorry. Sad

Good luck for his appeal.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 17/02/2012 06:35

Tesco have withdrawn the ad saying it was a mistake by IT at jobcentre plus .... Yeah yeah .... It will probably be read retired in eastern Europe somewhere.

I absolutely never shop at Tesco now as they have appalling business ethics and poor quality food. They have lost my business completely and I hope others follow suit.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 17/02/2012 06:35

It will probably be readvertised, not read retired!

KateSpade · 17/02/2012 08:22

What's ESA?

stillfrazzled · 17/02/2012 08:27

How about some direct emailing? Straight to companies' hqs, letting them know you are boycotting until they stop using slave labour?

eaglewings · 17/02/2012 08:34

I lost my ESA even though the Dr who did my review said she would write on the form how I'll I was. I lost ESA as I do not fit the criteria. On the day of the review I had a migraine, could not drive, (DH had to take me and the kids and wait in the car park having taken time off work to do so)
I am able to control my bowels, walk out of the house alone, turn my head (although this is limited) and use a computer.
What I can't do is stay awake for a whole day and walk for more than ten minutes on a regular basis and be on the computer for more than half an hour at a time.
I could claim JSA but know that I would have difficulty making the appointments at the Job Centre. Stuffed basically
Now a night shift at Tescos would be really helpful to my recovery.....

peekabooby · 17/02/2012 08:55

YANBU on so many levels, These big companies are being subsidised every which way.

I would really like to get involved with campaigning against all this shit but everything I find is down south, anybody know of any groups in the North West? It is looking like I will be outside my town hall with my placard all alone.

EightiesChick · 17/02/2012 09:03

peekabooby Look here

TapselteerieO · 17/02/2012 09:25

stillfrazzled I think there are people contacting HQ of these companies on twitter. I am considering sending a letter to all the local stores to let them know why they are losing my custom and to the shops that don't use Workfare to let them know that I will be shopping with them more!

I agree that there seems to be no political opposition standing up for the rights of ordinary people. I almost feel since Tony Blair got in to power there seems to be a plan to destroy Labour. I haven't voted Labour since TB decided to ignore the people and take us to war in Iraq.

With the ConDems I think we are in for a really bad time, they have only just got started.

KalSkirata · 17/02/2012 09:33

Did I read that for each workfare slave the Govt (and thus the taxpayer) will pay Tesco £14,000?
The slave will only get £67 (also from the Govt) and the private company who places him or her also gets paid?

peekabooby · 17/02/2012 09:44

Thanks Eightieschick, I will be there :)

fuzzPigwickPapers · 17/02/2012 09:54

KateSpade ESA is Employment Support Allowance, it's like the new incapacity benefit I think? DH went on it when sick pay ran out and his company terminated his contract.

Thanks Nilgiri. I think we will be applying for DLA after this, but I don't suppose he would get it as technically it's not a disability. They've been reluctant to operate as due to his other injuries (all caused by his mother) there is a big risk of further complications. However he is having a scan in the next few months (!) to make the decision.

TBH he couldn't really go on JSA anyway if he loses - because he's been off, I've had to get a job - actually a PT apprenticeship (thankfully the council pays apprentices pretty well, not £2.50ph!) - and am hoping to go FT soon, so he is at home with the DCs. He would rather just not claim JSA even if it meant less money, because no matter what the bastard assessor people say he is in no way fit for work yet and the idea of him taking the first job that came along and making himself worse, while we bankrupt ourselves with childcare costs, is the bigger of two evils I think.

molepom · 17/02/2012 09:57

Eightieschick, I've posted that link on Twitter with the #spartacusreport tag to get more interest.

KateSpade · 17/02/2012 09:58

Ahhh, right, Things are changing so much, and not for the better.

Their getting rid of DLA or changing it soon i heard?

molepom · 17/02/2012 10:10

They are chagning DLA to the point it is something else entirely and yes, certain aspects of DLA will be gone leaving thousands in desperation.

ie..(no exaggeration here either)

You can not be a carer for a disabled child and be disabled yourself,
You can not claim for more than 1 disabled child (if you have 2 or more..tough)
Middle rate dla will be Lower rate dla,
Lower rate dla will be no more

This is just a drop of what they are propsing, other things they are trying to force though are much scareier and are nothing short of barbaric to be honest.
None of the cuts or changes make any sense what so ever. Getting support from the Daily Mail says it all really, if they are pauing on the "benefit scroungers" line to support against these changes then you know it's bad.

31 people have DIED waiting to overturn the new assessments saying they are fit for work, a man in a coma was deemed fit to work because he didnt turn up for his assessment, another man DIED from a heart attack before he left the building from his assessment after being told he was fit for work. There are others that I read every day of people going back to over turn the assessments just to be told by the judge that they are surprised they even had to go through this in the first place, never mind appeal.

It's not just bad it's immoral. You dont take money from the disabled, never mind the disabled kids, you certainly dont force them back to work when they are clearly in no fit state to do so, and as for the NHS..well, there's another can of worms there.

Every fibre of my being is genuinly scared and we either need to revolt or get the government out ASAP.
