To think that the logical conclusion of conservatism is nazism?

It seems to be a survival of the fittest ideology. I understand that I am being a bit simplistic so please could someone correct me if I am wrong and tell me what conservatism really stands for.
Also if you vote conservative how can you sleep at night why?

Oooh this will be interesting.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 15/02/2012 22:14

Well, they are doing a really shit job at protecting and supporting the vulnerable of society.

microserf · 15/02/2012 22:14

i wish there was an "eating popcorn, enjoying the show" emoticon.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 15/02/2012 22:14

I'd say more 'animal farm' then Nazi though.

tinkertitonk · 15/02/2012 22:15

Well Nazism is short for Nazionalsozialismus = National socialism so establishing your point might be hard.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/02/2012 22:16

Oh... was the last government better, OP, I must have missed it. Hmm

What a shit-stirring thread. Here, have a bun to start you off.. Biscuit

TessTickular · 15/02/2012 22:16

And we're off!

OldGreyWiffleTest · 15/02/2012 22:16

I voted Conservative so I would never never ever have to see Gordon Brown's face again, nor hear his cock-eyed views and policies that got us all into this bloody mess in the first place. 13 years and he wrecked this country.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/02/2012 22:17

You're right, I am off. This thread is just an excuse for an argument.

TessTickular · 15/02/2012 22:18

Mumsnet is just an excuse for an argument.

In fact, the internet...

LydiaWickham · 15/02/2012 22:21

That depends, are you starting from the point of believing the Nazi party of Germany were fascists or not?

ecclesvet · 15/02/2012 22:24

Conservatism stands for maintaining the status quo. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, as long as the status quo is worth maintaining.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 15/02/2012 22:24

YABU and you're quite wrong about survival of the fittest. What appeals to me about conservative politics is that it is 'small state' ie. treating people like grown-ups, providing opportunities & safety-nets but otherwise letting them manage their lives without too much interference from government. Nazism is/was some hotch-potch of ideas designed to control insecure human beings by appealing to base prejudices and fears

goodasgold · 15/02/2012 22:25

The only Nazis were working socialists, they were far left, not far right. They did not believe in letting the market forces take place.

ThisIsNotMyLife · 15/02/2012 22:26

The logical conclusion of toryism is republicanism.

We'll turn into poorer, less interesting version on the US.

ThisIsNotMyLife · 15/02/2012 22:27

Oh and I hate it when people try and drag evolutionary theory into politics - it's always a misunderstood, bastardised version of it.

FourEyesGood · 15/02/2012 22:28

To vote Conservative because you don't like the current Labour PM is like cutting off your ears because you can hear a slightly irritating but harmless noise.

Or some such analogy which implies that voting Tory is always going to be utterly stupid. Anyone who lived through any part of the eighties should know that.

To refer to Gordon Brown's views as "cock-eyed" seems incredibly crass to me. I wasn't a big fan of him as PM, but I think he was unfairly treated and besides, his poor management of the country had nothing to do with his eye condition.

twomumsfourkids · 15/02/2012 22:29

I think that ThisIsNotMyLife has it about right: their shared policy of privatising everything etc.

ThisIsNotMyLife · 15/02/2012 22:30

Was it so poor? We had a global economic meltdown. I think he coped pretty well really. I voted for him at the last election - partly out of gruding approval and partly out of sheer terror of Cameron.

LadyBeagleEyes · 15/02/2012 22:32

As a Scot, the conservatives are totally irrelevant here.
I don't think it's about Nazis.
It's just that they're all cunts.
HTH

toptramp · 15/02/2012 22:33

I think that evolutionary theory plays an important part in politics as both are concerned ultimately with humna behaviour and the forces that drive it. Ultimately human nature determines politics. I do want to shit stir; or at least provoke an interesting debate. Plus I am genuinely a bit thick when it comes to politics so I am hoping to be enlightened.

I live in the North East, would you come down and annex us please? Not far, just down to Middlesborough will do. We'll line the streets and throw flowers as the Scottish army marches in...

aurynne · 15/02/2012 22:36

Both right and left extremism ends up in fascism. The further away from the centre any political ideology gets, the more similar it becomes to all dictatorships the human history has lived through. In the end it is always a person who wants absolute power and believes himself to be god-like. Political ideas are thrown through the window once power is granted.

ThisIsNotMyLife · 15/02/2012 22:37

In human behavior yes it does. But. 'Survival of the fittest' is commonly understood to refer to survival of the fittest gene not individual. Alturism and looking after the weaker members of your pack (who probably share your genes) is an important evolutionary strategy and the one that won us our spot on the top of the food chain. It's socialism basically. Be nice to the weak if you want to survive.
