AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

To tell all those of you who only post on AIBU that there is a whole world of very specific boards on Mumsnet for you to post on?

BIWI · 11/02/2012 23:05

MNHQ have, over the years, very kindly created any number of different boards to reflect the many and varied interests that Mumsnetters have.

Anything from pets to health to relationships to gay children to education to things for sale to comments on site stuff to general chat, etc etc.

So why, oh why, do you persist in only posting in AIBU?

A topic tidy-up does sound like a good idea, but MN seem to have decided against it...

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/02/2012 12:34

There are just far too many topics.
I like the book thread eg, but why is it divided into so many sections? It could all go into one topic.
So many subjects have so many sub topics.
It all needs filtered down IMO.
Though I must admit AIBU is probably the most fun Grin

AIBu gets more traffic - the usual trot out. it gets more traffic because people misuse it. Self fulfilling as I previously said.

southeastastra · 12/02/2012 12:59

yeah get a life biwi WinkGrin

youarekidding · 12/02/2012 13:03

Why do you care so much what we lost and where? a typo that makes sense! And I agree with what you were trying to say running Grin

But the OP does have a point re AIBU, and I've only noticed it since it was moved. I love AIBU as much as the next person and as Le Queen said it's the place to go for a bunfight entertainment. It's where I go to unwind or if I'm really bored!

BUT- the distinct lack of traffic in other topics does make it frustrating when you need advice. Especially when your already wound up Wink

I think a cull, cut down etc of topics would make the board easier to navigate and other topics busier and therefore used more frequently.

I have recently began using active convos and discussion of the day.

runningwilde · 12/02/2012 13:10

Post not lost...

runningwilde · 12/02/2012 13:12

Fair point youarekidding about the lack of traffic on other boards

ShowOfUmblestAnds · 12/02/2012 13:13

OnlyANinja, You are not above using the forum in a tidy fashion was me. Blush

I think MN should cull a few topics, people shouldn't post things which are blatantly misplaced in aibu (ie you have a problem with a certain thing be it dv, health anxiety etc, it's a trigger and you've hidden certain topics for a reason and shouldn't have to confront it in aibu or you have a question about dog food for example) and people shouldn't use aibu as an excuse to be rude or confrontational in a way they wouldn't do elsewhere. That would be just smashing.

BIWI · 12/02/2012 13:13

Well, well, well.

What an interesting response this has provoked.

I'm sure people think IABU. But to be told to 'sod off', 'get a life' and 'stop whingeing' ...

Lovely people. Thank you.

mn has moved my thread

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/02/2012 13:17

Would people post on the other sections of the board though? I've posted on chat and style & beauty and relationships... it wouldn't occur to me to go to the other sections. I agree that there are too many to be useful.

I really like AIBU, other people perhaps like the sections they frequent more. If AIBU went, I'd probably get more ironing done.

OnlyANinja · 12/02/2012 13:18

I knew it was an S person :)

southeastastra · 12/02/2012 13:18

i was only messing with you biwi, i agree with you and have started similar threads.

can't be arsed now as i know what the responses will be - though i tend to wade through topics looking for the correct one, it's useful.

bibbitybobbityhat · 12/02/2012 13:41

Tbh, I have no idea how you it comes to be that people hang out only in aibu. Do you go and search it out when you log on and then only look at the thread titles that come up in that big long list?
I use Active Convos - I like the variety.

I don't only come on mn for entertainment purposes, I come to ask for advice and ideas, get perspective, chat about books, sometimes my experience in some things might be helpful to other people. Wish I had the balls to hide the whole stupid topic.

WorraLiberty · 12/02/2012 13:48

People don't 'hang out' anywhere really. I think they just refresh one particular page.

Some people (like myself) have it bookmarked as this was the first topic I found...due to the fact a link was posted on another forum.

Some people use the 'popular forums' list at the bottom and AIBU is at the top.

Some people don't find the AC 'synopsis' particularly riveting

Others will have their own reasons.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/02/2012 13:49

I don't even know how/what Active Convos is? AIBU is on my drop down list, I must have saved it at some point. I used to click on 'Talk - All Topics' to go to Chat but now it's on a list at the bottom of screen.

Does it really take balls to hide a topic? I would have thought a non-interest would stop somebody clicking into it if they didn't want to read it... unless, of course, it's a guilty pleasure? Grin

WorraLiberty · 12/02/2012 13:51

I meant discussions of the day are often not particularly riveting Blush

This is the list at the moment....

Discussions of the dayMost active
Tax breaks - for having a cleaner?
Life's small pleasures - nominations?
Mumsnet haircut - cut above the rest?
Overheard gems - come and share
First-time mum - need-to-know tips?

I would miss too much of what interests me if I were to hide aibu because I'd miss threads like

aibu to want a nice school run coat - see, I would love to look at links for such coats, I need a new one myself but am not much of a shopper, but if I hid aibu I'd miss out.

I totally get and understand that a lot of people DO NOT CARE ONE IOTA who posts what where. But presumably there are customs and unspoken rules on Mumsnet that you are grateful to have - be it no sparkly tickers, no * out swearing, light moderation, no references to babydancing ...

To quite a lot of us, this aibu thing is just another of those. An irritation, but rather a big one.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/02/2012 14:21

I can see what you mean, bibbity, AIBU does seem to have grown and it's probably the fastest-moving board on MN but I think if, for argument's sake, AIBU were taken off, the traffic would just move full time to 'Chat' and you still wouldn't see more people posting in the more obscure areas.

I think for many, their internet time is 'down time', not pressure to post on specific, serious topics.

I'm grateful that we don't have sparkly tickers, load time would be awful if we did have. I'm glad there's light moderation too. I've seen references to 'baby-dancing' , I dont like the swearing at all...

I too would like to see some links for good coats though.

WorraLiberty · 12/02/2012 14:34

A good coat for Lying

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/02/2012 14:52

Shock... Imagine... going out dressed head to foot as a giant condom... Blush

Nice try, Worra but it's not really my colour... Grin

WorraLiberty · 12/02/2012 14:58

Friggin Boden wearers....

So ungrateful Hmm
