Aibu to think dog ownership should be abolished?

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 15:46

I am sure dogs bring great pleasure to their owners.

But why should the pet owners right to pleasure be greater than my right to walk down a street that is not all littered in dog poo of all shapes colour and state of decay?

Judging by the amount, I would think there is NO SUCH THING as responsible dog owners and that they just all let their pooches poop wherever they fancy.
To put it mildly, our school run is really crap.

And while you are at it Dolcelatte, you can answer these questions:

  1. Why do you post on a thread you find tedious rather than just hide it.
  2. Why do you seem to hold the opinion that dog owners have the right to NOT pick up after their dogs?
  3. What suggestions do YOU have to solve this problem?

It is annoying. Especially when I go out of my way to pick up my dog's shit. Do you know what really mystifies me, though? The people that pick up the shit, tie it in a bag and then hang the bag from a tree. I mean, wtf?!

Takver · 10/02/2012 16:43

Well, as a dog owner (who religiously picks up!) the one thing I hate EVEN MORE than dog shit on the pavement is bags of dogshit on the pavement. I mean, WTF is going through someones head to pick up the shit into a plastic bag that won't rot, tie that bag up and then abandon it on the verge??? At least piles of dogshit rot in time.

I'll do a swapsie, though. You can ban dogs if I can ban cars (or at least cars within a 1/4 mile radius of any school) Wink

Dolcelatte · 10/02/2012 16:45

oooh sorry, I'm sorry to offend. I'm not unsympathetic, it's just that there have been a lot of similar posts recently. Quite right, I should try to come up with something more exciting and if I have nothing useful to say I should not say anything.

ChickensGoMeh · 10/02/2012 16:47

Yeah...the bagging of dog shit is a bit awkward, environment wise. Not sure what the solution is.

FlightRisk · 10/02/2012 16:52

OP lives in a crappy area obviously

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 16:57

I dont disagree, flight! Grin

I buy the biodegradable bags but even so that can't be a perfect solution. I'd like to have a chute into the sewerage system to shovel the poo straight into.

At the moment I have a pile of earth and sand that I drop poo into, then scoop compost over the poo from the nearby compost bin. It does seem to break down but it's not a perfect solution.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 10/02/2012 17:02

yanbu
at least bring the dog license back and the law tgat dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times in public.
hate the dog shit, too. especially on cold days there seems more about.
and I also think it cannot be just a minority who don't pick it up, it's just too much for that.

TwllBach · 10/02/2012 18:13

I would be really sad if I had to give up my dog because other people weren't responsible though. I love my dog, I treat her well and, yes, I do pick up after her. I have even been known to wade into thistles or whatever spikey things they are ripping my dog walking jeans

I know dog shit is horrid. My dog is on the lead when on pavements and roads. She is allowed off the lead when there are no people around in fields, on the headland or on the mountain. She is microchipped. She doesn't have her DNA registered, but I didn't know that you actually could. Is it a serious thing? What is it for?

Why should me and my dog be punished because of some other people?

I'm not even entirely adverse to the idea of having to apply for a licence to keep a dog, but that leads to whole other issues like would they be issued retrospectively? Where will the money come from to train and pay the staff responsible for assessing families/homes? What will happen to the dogs that are removed from unsuitable homes? There aren't enough rescue centres as it is, especially No Kill. Or perhaps you think we should just have all dogs PTS?

I've just got far too carried away with my own post to remember if you were being serious or just having a rant, OP Grin and of its the latter then carry on! But if it's the former then I think you are being a teensy weensy but unreasonable Grin

AuntLucyInPeru · 10/02/2012 18:24

If it makes you feel any better, from time to time I pick up extra poos entirely unrelated to my dog, if I happen to have a spare poo bag in my pocket and some really inconsiderate other owner has left one in a stupid place. I always secretly hope there might be some karma in it for me, to level out the times when I fall short of the person I want to be.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 10/02/2012 18:25

Why should me and my dog be punished because of some other people?

because too many are not as responsible as you. dog poo is disgusting and can be a health risk.
I don't think anyone talks about putting dogs to sleep, but clearly something has to be done.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 10/02/2012 18:28

some drugs/medicines are restricted or illegal for the same reason: a minority is not taking them responsibly and appropriately which is why they are restricted/illegal for everyone. like it or not.

blahdiblahdiblah · 10/02/2012 18:30

Not all dog owners live in towns and walk their dogs on pavements

hiddenhome · 10/02/2012 18:37

'Not all dog owners live in towns and walk their dogs on pavements'

No, they live in the countryside and leave their shit for walkers to tread in instead Hmm

hiddenhome · 10/02/2012 18:38

Cow Shit = acceptable and non offensive - a bit mucky
Dog Shit = disgusting, nasty and offensive

hiddenhome · 10/02/2012 18:39

My favourite is sheep shit. That's like huge rabbit droppings and doesn't cause any offense whatsoever Smile

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 18:42

hiddenhome, I love sheet shit. It taught my oldest to stop saying "shit" all the time!

I was so annoyed with him, everything was "shit" and "crap" and I got really fed up hearing these words. Until we went cycling in wales. We lost our path a bit, and cycled down a long downhill field. As we had taken the wrong turn, we had to walk our bikes up. Ds was literally traumatised trying to not step in sheep poo. So I said to him. "Darling, you are now wading in your own utterances. You are literally walking in crap, so stop saying all the time will you"

He was cured! Halleluja!

Ha, ha Quint that's funny Grin

Cherriesarelovely · 10/02/2012 18:47

Can't argue with that Op. As a dog owner who ALWAYS picks up poo I am equally disgusted by this. Don't blame you for feeling pissed off.

toboldlygo · 10/02/2012 18:58

I've said it before on these threads and I'll say it again... where on earth are you all living that dog shit is such a problem?

I live in a rural town with a large dog population - I can count ten dogs on our street alone - and I can't remember the last time I ever saw dog shit on the pavement. The odd one left in the middle of the country footpath, admittedly (FGS just kick or flick it off the path so no-one treads in it, cretins) but never in town, anywhere near a school run or even in the park.

echt · 10/02/2012 19:04

Dog and cat owner here.

I'd go for one of each max for any home. Registered and desexed.

In my bit of Australia all dogs and cats must be registered, with reductions for the elderly, and animals which are desexed. Registration must be renewed each year. All cats have to be kept indoors at night 9.00.p.m until 6.00.p.m.

All property has to keep dogs securely on the property. Some LAs will fine you if your dog rushes up to fences and gates barking at passersby.

All dogs on lead except certain beaches all year round, and others depending on the time of year. There are off-leash ovals, about the size of football pitch, where dogs can be exercised all year-round ( though not when match is one, of course).

Crucially, at each of these ovals, the council provides free poo-bags, and a bin to put them at several points on the oval and beaches. Rangers occasionally swoop, with in the spot fines for an off-leash dog in the wrong area, or you if you aren't armed with poo-bags, 4 are advised.

There are still people who flout this, though not often; the level of compliance is very high, and in 6 years here, I've never seen dog shit on a pavement, though there are some lazy twunts on the ovals, and I always pick up their mutt's shit.

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 19:05

Well, I live in London, and there just is no kicking fresh smeared dogpoo that a child has already stepped on, or scooted through! Where to kick it? Into somebodys garden? There are walled front gardens everywhere around here? Out to the street? Maybe I can wait a few days and wait for it to dry a little, if still "unharmed" before kicking?

What about drunken teens throwing up in public places, can we abolish them too? Kids and adults who drop litter, can we penalise them to within an inch of their lives? Gum chuckers? Spitters? Non-poo-picking-up dog owners... all disgusting.

Life is messy.

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 19:13

I will assume that all of you who disagree will either be dog owners who think their dogs are entitled to foul where they want. Or non-dog owners so fed up with others, on the basis that some teens puke, some spit, some litter, heck why not join the lot. Sad It is very sad that so few has any regards for the community we all live in and are supposed to share. oh well.
