Aibu to think dog ownership should be abolished?

I am sure dogs bring great pleasure to their owners.

But why should the pet owners right to pleasure be greater than my right to walk down a street that is not all littered in dog poo of all shapes colour and state of decay?

Judging by the amount, I would think there is NO SUCH THING as responsible dog owners and that they just all let their pooches poop wherever they fancy.
To put it mildly, our school run is really crap.

I do worry about residue being left even when a poo has been picked up, especially if its a grassy area. There might be health and hygiene implications to that.

AuntLucy is a wonderful woman.

Echt's account is interesting. I wonder if its because not complying with pet rules in Australia is seen as socially unacceptable. Like the way attitudes to drink driving have changed here over the past 30 years. Legislation can do a certain amount, but there's more to it than that.

echt · 10/02/2012 19:19

I agree, Flangelina, and I've wondered myself how the councils introduced it. Resistance to seat belts and curtailing of smoking was very high, but compliance is high, too.

One of the persistent myths of Austrlalia is the larrikin, the refuser. My observation is that, in a perfectly natural way, they are law-abiding, rather obedient, in fact.

Quintessential... I would just like everybody to clean up after themselves and their pets/children. All excretions - animal and human - are disgusting and I don't want to be exposed to them. I think a lot of people feel that way. I don't disagree with you - I want to widen the scope.

toboldlygo · 10/02/2012 19:22

Assuming that was in response to me, Quint, I think you've misinterpreted me. The ignorant owners should be kicking it off the (rural, middle of nowhere) country paths if they can't be bothered to pick it up. In town everyone around here appears to be picking it up already. I think I've seen maybe one dog shit on a pavement in the whole year. I'm sorry that's not the case where you live.

Echt, I appreciate everything you're saying except the one dog limit. I would be fully in support of strict leash laws, dog warden patrols, stop-and-scan microchip checks, poo bag checks, hell, even compulsory muzzling if there were a network of fenced in dog parks as an alternative. With some nice facilities, benches, water fountain, poo bags and bins, maybe some fixed agility equipment. I'd pay to access such a facility.

echt · 10/02/2012 19:34

I think the key is enforcement, and support; the off-lesah areas, and poo-bag/bin provision. Behaving better is made easier.

I should say the off-leash areas are numerous where I am, and other LAs are less generous. Dog owners drive some way to exercise their dogs in these areas. It's dog city at times. A great place for dogs to learn their manners.

Now I think of it, cafes all have a water bowl, and the outside seating will invariably have dogs tied to the table leg while the owners guzzle the unbelievable amounts of coffee deemed necessary for the average Australian.

Who's keeping tabs on their MN spreadsheet - wasn't there talk of researching whether the moon has an effect on the recurring subjects on here?

I haven't seen a good FF/BF bunfight discussion for a while, but I have been away for a week so I may have missed one.

So back to the discussion at hand:

Kill all dogs, and cats and hamsters (conniving little fuckers)

Also, ban everything - EVERYTHING.

mwahahahahhahaaaaaaaaaaaa evil cackles are cool

hiddenhome · 10/02/2012 19:54

I can't remember the last time I saw vomit on the pavement and I live near a very busy town centre - council are pretty good at keeping it clean.

We have had to give up three of our favourite walks due to the amount of dog shit on them. One of the walks is on the outskirts of the town and the other two are away from the town.

QuintessentialyHollow · 10/02/2012 19:58

I think I have seen vomit on a pavement once. But it was also on the school run, during the recent noro epidemic which affected dss school badly. Not a common site around here at all! And hardly any rubbish flying around either!

Theres the odd carrot, though, after the snow last weekend.

Is there an environmentally friendly and realistic way to dispose of dog poo?

ChickensGoMeh · 11/02/2012 11:25

I was wondering about those dog loo's that you put in the garden. They're supposed to break it down and turn it in to compost. But I'm not entirely convinced it would work on our hard clay ground.

Armi · 11/02/2012 11:29

I'd like to abolish twats who moan about dogs all the time.

mrsjay · 11/02/2012 11:36

DOg owners hate the poo just the same as everybody else i like the little flag idea Grin or maybe we could get people hiding int he bushes an d jump out shouting OIY PICK THAT SHIT UP , when i had my dog I used to offer poo bags if i could sense people wernt going to pick it up , TBh where i live its rare to see poop on the pavement ,

ChaoticAngel · 11/02/2012 11:57

Seeing as humans are probably the most destructive species on this planet maybe we should ban them too Wink

OP I do agree with you about dog shit, it's disgusting, but banning people from owning dogs because some are irresponsible is not the answer and could lead to a new set of problems.

Do we ban all cars/bikes because there are some irresponsible drivers out there?
