To really not get the denim shorts over tights fad

Mrswhiskerson · 10/02/2012 13:32

Yes I am probably showing my age but all I see now is young girls wearing high waisted jeans cut like knickers over black tights , it is the most unflattering thing even on young lovely figures and don't get me started on the bums hanging out of the bottom of said shorts, I want to tell them to put some trousers on .

I have turned into my mum haven't I?

Also the fashion fir shaving half your head, why does anyone want to look like they have had brain surgery? And the years it will take to grow back!

I agree!

Gay40 · 10/02/2012 13:36

It's not a look that suits me, but I'm shaped like the Michelin Man (the tyre place not Michel Roux).

I think it can look quite nice on the right figure.

tiddlerslate · 10/02/2012 13:36

YANBU

It's always really thick black opaque tights too

belgo · 10/02/2012 13:37

This fashion was around 20 years ago. If you have the legs for it, it looks great.

lesley33 · 10/02/2012 13:37

YABU - you are turning into your mum! And so am I because I agree with you Grin

Beamur · 10/02/2012 13:38

You are turning into your Mum...
My teenage DSD dresses like this too. And wears other dreadful clothes, but it is her perogative.
I cringe now looking at pictures of myself at that age.

aldiwhore · 10/02/2012 13:38

YABU.

You're not supposed to get it. My mum didn't get my rah-rah skirts, or ski pants, or padded reversible jumpers.

In comparison I think the denim/tights combo is a LOT better than my fashion in the 80's.

I also personally think its a cheeky yet covered up look, I'd love to be able to pull it off, but even if I had the figure I have the wrong digits in my age.

aldiwhore · 10/02/2012 13:39

Oh and its considerable better than MC Hammer pants!!

shesparkles · 10/02/2012 13:40

My dd wears this and I'd far rather it was denim shorts than mini skirts! I think she looks great (don't tell her that!)

AspirantPirate · 10/02/2012 13:40

What belgo said. Don't you remember Brosettes? Grin (and no, I wasn't one. 25 years on, I still feel a need to clarify that. No grolsh bottle tops on MY shoes, thanks very much)

Pandemoniaa · 10/02/2012 13:41

I'm greatly preferring it to the original and vile "Hot Pants". Which most of you are far too young to remember but inevitably involved high-waisted denim shorts worn over bare legs. Far too many of these legs being like blotchy tree trunks...

Katiepoes · 10/02/2012 13:41

I wore denum cutoffs over black wool tights in the early 90s. I'd do it now only I truly believe the 'if you did it first time round you're too old' rule.

Wearing clothes to upset old mammies is your job when young. Leave them too it, how else will the get photos to cringe over when old and respectable?

Clownsarescary · 10/02/2012 13:42

I think it looks quirky and I'm an old gimmer.

aldiwhore · 10/02/2012 13:44

AspirantPirate I made a lot of pocket money from selling Grolsh bottle tops... my dad ran a pub. I had to pay it all back though, plus interest, as he got 50p a bottle for returns if they were complete, I was selling the tops for 20p each.... I am not a great businesswoman!

AspirantPirate · 10/02/2012 13:46

We've all got to learn, eh, aldiwhore? Grin

bonkersLFDT20 · 10/02/2012 13:46

I used to wear this in the early 90s. I am 41 now and even though I have nice legs I think the look would be a bit young for me.

As far as fashions go, I don't think this one is too bad.

CointreauVersial · 10/02/2012 13:47

This was a big trend in the late 80s when I was at university, but the shorts weren't quite so "short" back then.

I think the look is cute on DD1, but she's 10.

The clothing fashion I can't bear at the moment? Those awful crazy-knit zig-zaggy leggings, usually black and white, worn with a short top. They make even the slimmest teen look like the back of a bus.

KatAndKit · 10/02/2012 13:47

I wore this "fashion" back in 1993. I definitely wouldn't do it now but neither my jeans or my tights are size 10 any more and I'm not 15. I'm sure I thought it looked great at the time. Especially the purple cut offs. It probably didn't - even when I was a slim teenager my thighs were never my best feature!

randommoment · 10/02/2012 13:48

Actually I still think I looked fantastic in the nineties when I wore this outfit. I was four sizes smaller then though. And my dds look pretty good in it too, but I'm not sure I dare tell them in case they automatically stop wearing it because mummy likes it.

Weaselarch · 10/02/2012 13:49

The Reynolds Girls were doing it (with slightly longer shorts) way back in the 80s. I wonder if they'd still rather jack than Fleetwood Mac, or whether they're partial to a bit of Albatross these days?

bijou3 · 10/02/2012 13:49

I remember wearing neon yellow legging and a neon orange crop top together ewwww

Feminine · 10/02/2012 13:51

I used to wear it in 89/90

Sawn off 501's and thick tights...or velvet hot pants...with a crystal round my neck on a piece of leather!

AND....cowboy boots.

I would not do it now Grin

happywheezer · 10/02/2012 13:55

I bought these shorts for holiday in store, only to find that they were on line like this
www.marksandspencer.com/Indigo-Collection-Cotton-Rich-Shorts/dp/B001HLATPW?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_4&nodeId=42966030&sr=1-4&qid=1328881907&pf_rd_r=01TGA2S69TKMFV8QD7H9&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=215485807&pf_rd_s=center-3
Sorry for the long link
I was then going to ask the same question.
I'm not sure that teenagers would be buying these, so what is going on?

cheekyseamonkey · 10/02/2012 13:57

Yes, you are turning into your mum. YABU

I'm far too fat old now, but 20 odd years ago I wore v short denim shorts over black tights, although with a crochet top & DM Boots rather than ballet pumps & giant hair.

cheekyseamonkey · 10/02/2012 13:58

Feminine :)
