To really not get the denim shorts over tights fad

Mrswhiskerson · 10/02/2012 13:32

Yes I am probably showing my age but all I see now is young girls wearing high waisted jeans cut like knickers over black tights , it is the most unflattering thing even on young lovely figures and don't get me started on the bums hanging out of the bottom of said shorts, I want to tell them to put some trousers on .

I have turned into my mum haven't I?

Also the fashion fir shaving half your head, why does anyone want to look like they have had brain surgery? And the years it will take to grow back!

I think it looks daft.
My 37yr old SIL however is always dressed in them.

FreudianSlipper · 10/02/2012 14:03

i think it looks great

wish i had that legs still to carry off this look (did about 20 years ago)

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 10/02/2012 14:12

Peekabooooo, I must be your sister in law then

I am wearing shorts now, although they are black and no arse is hanging out. I'm wearing them with black vest, brogues and a slouchy cardi. I have an hourglass figure and this look suits me. I am a stjooooodent anyway so its ok.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 10/02/2012 14:13

And obviously black tights, no corned beef on show.

Animation · 10/02/2012 14:16

They look great on my teenage daughter!!

ZenNudist · 10/02/2012 14:19

I don't think it looks bad. Works well on a 14- 17 year old. Wouldn't work on anyone over 21. Also helps if the wearer neither too skinny or too large. It's difficult to dress well at that age on limited budget.

Smellslikecatspee · 10/02/2012 14:21

Sigh....

I remember doing this.

If the shorts are cut right it can make your legs look soooooooooo long

and better than looking at corned beef legs

which is sadly the 'fashion' 'round here.
Yeap the short shorts with no tights even in this weather

sybilfaulty · 10/02/2012 14:26

I too wore this in 1991 and it looked good (as I was a bit plump, it was a fashion that suited better than some, although the shorts weren't short).

Fast forward 20y and, even though I am slimmer now, I'd frighten people when I turned round. A fashion for the young and slim alas. Bit like hotpants. Size 10 and under / AND 25 and under or you look desperate.

My DD1 looks great in shorts and tights now and I quite like the look for the young .

Mrswhiskerson · 10/02/2012 14:47

I knew I was turning into my mum ,
I was a brossette I had the bottle tops and everything

where I live (north east) the shorts are cut higher than my knickers so the girls are walking around with most of their bum hanging out,

mind I am a fine one to talk since I used to wear a top which was little more than a bikini top and a short skirt (no coat because in Newcastle it was not the done thing at all) with knee high boots for a night out I must hve looked like I charged by the hour,
I may be a tiny bit jealous that although I have really long slim leges they are attached to large hips and a post dc tummy and therefore would look ridiculous in shorts.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 10/02/2012 15:01

DD (11) wears little else at present, although her shorts aren't too short.

She looks lovely.

campariandlemonade · 10/02/2012 15:09

YANBU
I saw a 38 year old mum on the school run last week in said combo....plus bright pink hunter wellies... Looked quite frankly ridiculous, IMHO. Might look nice on teenagers though...so out of the fashion loop I didn't even know this look was in though, not sure which is therefore worse, her or me

PopcornBiscuit · 10/02/2012 15:17

YANBU. Too many close-fitting layers on that part of the body - including nylon tights - would have been considered a bit unhygienic/unhealthy, before this fad, wouldn't it?

Jins · 10/02/2012 15:40

I like it. And the hair thing.

You're only young once :)

ithaka · 10/02/2012 15:46

I think it looks great on little girls and teenagers - my 9 year old and 14 year old both totally rock this look. Cosy, funky worn with chunky boots or ballet flat, love it.

It makes me all misty eyed as I wore this look myself, back in the day (late 80s/early 90s). I would not wear it now. I weigh the same, but I am too old. It is a young/teeny look.

MrsBovary · 10/02/2012 15:49

Ooh yes, I too remember (wearing) similar look in the 90s as an older teenager, 16+. Lord, how old that makes me feel now. And no, I certainly wouldn't wear it now!
The 'cut' of the shorts you've mentioned doesn't sound flattering.

Deliasuckssometimes · 10/02/2012 15:53

I also sported this fashion as a student more years age than I choose to mention, it's nothing new like most of the tired looking fashions around these days.
YAB a bit of an old fart.

talkingnonsense · 10/02/2012 15:58

Oh, we used to do this in the early 90's - was v jealous of my friend who had a red silk pair of shorts that looked great with black rights- we all had clumpy dm type shoes then though. I had a green wool pair ( just below mid thigh) that I wore to work!

Backtobedlam · 10/02/2012 15:58

I like it and have worn these for many winters. Having read this thread I'm now fearing I'm too old to pull the look off any more, which makes me sad.

TheSherbetTurbot · 10/02/2012 16:28

Am 42. ... I wear them. not denim shorts, but nice black ones with thick tights and high boots and a chunky jumper. I dont look like mutton, or remotely tarty. My legs are ok though.

saintlyjimjams · 10/02/2012 16:31

I used to wear that 20 years ago. Alas can't really get away with it now.

aquashiv · 10/02/2012 16:44

Is this back in fasion then? I used to often dress like this in my teens back int he 80's. Was practical really as black tights thin the legs and jeans would keep the bottom under controlSmile.

Whatmeworry · 10/02/2012 17:14

Better than no shorts and leggings stretched tight and thin so knickers label is readable.

sausagesandmarmelade · 10/02/2012 18:47

Makes me shiver....

They must be freezing for the sake of fashion!

mamalovesmojitos · 10/02/2012 18:53

YABU I love that look!

CrunchyFrog · 10/02/2012 18:55

I wear them, therefore it is a brilliant look, because I am GAWJUS.

Wore it last time round, too.

And in between.
