.. for thinking that some MNers should stare at their navels for a bit

I've been going through the threads from the past few days, to get a feel for what people are posting, and I've noticed some posters who would benefit from a spot of navel staring which hopefully will bring them enlightenment and self awareness.

One mum was going on about how she didn't belive in technology and that DC should be doing things other than playing on the PC. Yet she spends several hours on the PC defending her views on why people shouldn't spent several hours on the PC Confused

Another mum was going on about how she didn't like DC playing violent games, either on the PC or with toy guns. She would rather DC do sporty stuff like martial arts. Excuse me but isn't that where people put on white jim-jams and then proceed to kick the shit out of each other while chanting 'Karate is for self defence only Daniel-San'?

Oh well, it keeps me amused while I wait for the delivery man to come.

YY to the karate thing Dont. Was it the play wrestling thread where they weren't allowed to wrestle but they went to karate? So no wrestling with your own brother/sister but you can kick the shit out of a total stranger and win trophies for it? Grin

GirlWithPointyShoes · 08/02/2012 11:53

YANBU.

But for every hypocrite on MN there will be at least 20 people letting them know they are hypocritical.

LeBOF · 08/02/2012 11:55

I'm hoping that what I lack in self-awareness, I more than make up for in something amazing that I'm just not aware of yet.

MoreBeta · 08/02/2012 11:59

Oh we never allow DSs to fight or wrestle each other at all.

We do allow them to do competition judo though. Grin

MissPenteuth · 08/02/2012 12:00

Is it blue MoreBeta? IME bellybutton fluff is always blue.

dreamingbohemian · 08/02/2012 12:03

I haven't read the threads, but surely there's a difference between children being on the PC for hours and adults doing so?

And no, martial arts is not about people kicking the shit out of each other. Not for normal people anyway.

Yes there's a lot of hypocrisy around but I need better examples than that to agree with you!

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2012 12:05

If martial arts is for self defence, why are there so many belts and why would you compete in it? Once you can defend yourself you are done surely?

Anonymumous · 08/02/2012 12:06

My seven year old son has been going to karate for a year and a half now. He has a red belt, and yet his idea of defending himself is still to either run away or roll around on the floor. If only he WOULD kick the shit out of someone occasionally!!! Grin

To be fair, they are only allowed to make minimal contact with each other during karate - there are very specific rules about which parts of the body they are allowed to attack (e.g. no punching to the face) and they score points for touching vulnerable parts of the body - not for punching them. In a year and a half, I have only seen one child getting hurt at karate and that was during a game, not a fight.

I imagine things get a bit more violent when they get to the highest levels and start fighting in competitions. But there's no chance of that ever happening with my son, unless he learns to stay upright or stop running away! Grin

Laquitar · 08/02/2012 12:08

I don't agree with your examples either tbh.

And imo most people could do with less navel staring.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2012 12:08

I would run away Anonymumous. People in white suits with bare feet coming towards you in order to grapple you to the floor ain't my idea of fun.

Whatmeworry · 08/02/2012 12:12

YABU! If everyone did this they would BR andthen there would be no AIBU and then where would we be....

BelleEnd · 08/02/2012 12:12

I am not bendy enough to gaze at my own navel. I could look at the dirt under my fingernails instead if you want.

MissingHaversham · 08/02/2012 12:14

YABU, OP. HTH.

DontDoSupportiveGF · 08/02/2012 12:15

I don't agree with your examples either tbh

Mum spends hours on the PC defending why she thinks people shouldn't spend hours on the PC.

Stare at your navel a bit and then return to the above sentence. Repeat the navel bit until a feeling of enlightenment envelopes you.

MissingHaversham · 08/02/2012 12:18

Woman spends hours on PC explaining why she doesn't think children should do the same.

Woman explains that real physical activity is good, fantasy violence is bad, IHO.

You're equating adults with children and fantasy with reality if you can't see the difference.

YonSeaCow · 08/02/2012 12:19

Martial arts in an ART form douchebags. IT is NOT all about kicking the shit out of each other, did you know you have to learn 'forms' under their various names depending on the type for belts?

Have you ever done any? The type of self confidence and discipline gained from martial arts is not comparable to playing a shitty war game.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2012 12:20

Running up and down the stairs having a Nerf Gun battle is very real physical activity round here. Grin

ThePathanKhansWitch · 08/02/2012 12:21

What age can they start Karate?, my dd would love this i know, although we are pacifists obviously.Grin

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 08/02/2012 12:22

The aim of Karate is 'perfection of self' this is not achievable, hence why you need to continue in life long practice.

It is feck all to do with 'self defence' let alone 'beating the shit out of people'.

ShirleyO · 08/02/2012 12:24

I've got blue fluff in mine. HTH

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2012 12:24

Do you think the OP was saying this a bit tongue in cheek perhaps?

My DS did karate and he seemed to enjoy it but I couldn't see the attraction myself.

YonSeaCow · 08/02/2012 12:24

There's usually a 'tots' clubs round and about, prob 3ish? Depends on the child and the club really.

MoreBeta · 08/02/2012 12:24

MisPenteuth - it is blue! Grin

Whatmeworry · 08/02/2012 12:26

The aim of Karate is 'perfection of self'

So is Philosophy and Meditation. They don't have a "learn to kick the shit out of other people" element to it though, which is why the kids far preferred Karate

Lets not pretend that the kids do it for lentil weavery reasons :o

ThePathanKhansWitch · 08/02/2012 12:27

Thankyou Yonseacow Smile.
