Natural labour: bad
Major abdominal surgery: good

Had elcs because of G2 placenta previa but thankfully my cs experience was lovely and I didn't need pain relief from day 2 onwards.
Depends on your pain threshold - mine is high Smile

Haven't had anything else to compare.

cheesesarnie · 23/01/2012 20:21

lovely lovely csHmm.my last one i ended up with a cut to the bladder and having to wear a bag.....bliss!oh and warnings not to have anymore dc..bliss!

"i think it is worth hearing from women who did find the experience uplifting, calm and exhilerating, as a smooth natural birth is touted"

Actually a non-smooth natural birth (I've had a couple) which involves a lot of interventions and problems can be hilarious, mind-expanding, and a proper adventure.

I wouldn't have missed out on the experience for anything, even if a c/s would have been a much easier and quicker ride.

ZonkedOut · 23/01/2012 20:23

1 emcs, 1 VBAC here. For the first few weeks, the VB recovery was better, but longer term had more complications. But then, DD2 was back to back and I had an episiotomy, 3rd degree tear, haematoma and 1.5l blood loss. So if I was to have a 3rd, I would choose elcs.

But then, a friend had a baby 6 days ago, 2 minutes pushing. Apparently it was, "Oh, he's crowning. Here's the head. Here's the body, there you go." If I could book a birth like that, I'd have another VB.

otchayaniye · 23/01/2012 20:24

i liked the attention, the analgesia and the calmness and the experience of being in theatre and yes, i enjoyed craning to see my insides in the lights (no screen on first section either) shagmund. it was all so thrilling and exciting and the sensation of the epidural was nice ( especially in the second birth when i'd been in painful labour). the nausea/shivering less so.

but all that pales when we met our babies. i don't believe in god, but came close.

but i can see the pluses in a natural birth too. that you've worked HARD for it.

so congrats to all of you.

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 20:25

YANBU.

Had a 30 hour labour with my darling and it put me off ever having another one Sad C sections were seen as an absolute no-no in my day, oh natural is best.

If i could have had an elective C section I probably would have had another.

Massive thumbs up for this bit of legislation.

KittyFane · 23/01/2012 20:25

Wow, I found it bloody terrifying.

It was very pleasurable to me Shagmund, i have a lot of health problems meaning the section was very relaxing, i finally felt comfortable, had supportive people around me, i felt like i was in the right place and all was good!
I was very happy with my experience, and am looking forward to another section in July.
I don't see why you are being so aggressive here though, i am sure there are not a lot of people who would go around judging a woman who was proclaiming her VB was blissfull, and if they did, they would be jumped on.

I think by now we are all aware of the fact that some people have good and bad experiences with both methods of delivery, and the truth is, some people would have and have had awful natural labours, so why can't they just say the truth, their sections were very good and happy?

otchayaniye · 23/01/2012 20:28

absolutely OTT. i felt well looked after. when i was in labour hanging about, i didn't.

that made a big difference to my mental state.

Ragwort · 23/01/2012 20:28

Personally I loved my EMCS - no pain afterwards, no scar Confused - I can still remember (11 years later Grin) the one contraction I had and it was horrendous.

I am delighted to have 'missed out' on the experience of a vaginal birth Grin.

Tiredmumno1 · 23/01/2012 20:29

Yup cos a section is a much easier ride Hmm

charitygirl · 23/01/2012 20:30

I see your C section, and raise you my wonderful epidurals. I'd very nearly pay for the experience all over again. But I've always liked drugs.

However, I'm not a silly stirrer like the OP so
I'll add the disclaimer that, of course, your mileage may vary.

kerala · 23/01/2012 20:31

Weird thread. Have tried both on balance prefer VBAC the reason can be summed up in one word: catheter. Euurghgh hated having that in.

OTTMummA · 23/01/2012 20:32

Yes, my mental state changed dramatically the morning of the section, i was literally on a cloud!

It is sad to see someone be so dismisive and defensive shagmud, we are all different, so it makes sense others prefer one thing to another doesn't it?

worm77daisy · 23/01/2012 20:32

DC1 VB 4th Deg Tear.

DC2 ELCS epidural stopped working and had to be knocked out.

IF we ever had DC3 I would opt for VB with another tear if necessary as the pain during and after my ELCS was far worse for me. Productive pain versus unnatural pain.

mummyanonymous · 23/01/2012 20:34

Ssssh charity girl. Shsssssss.

OP posts:
thekidsrule · 23/01/2012 20:35

had both

c-section with twins,ok but had to have transfusion, deffo more recovery

normal with singleton just gas and air very fast recovery vs c-section,easy birth but having twins prior may not be a fair likeness,

but on my experience normal was best for me

dont think its that helpful to pit one against each other though, different folks different strokes

PacificDogwood · 23/01/2012 20:37

The OP deserves the Medal for Most General Generalisation Ever Grin.

For that, YABU.
Congrats on a good delivery (if you just had one - still a bit unclear on that).

FWIW, I had a good induction post term, a good emCS at 31 weeks and 2x good VBACs. Yes, I consider myself lucky.

How everybody else delivers...

KalSkirata · 23/01/2012 20:39

not sure of your point. Surly its very individual. Having said that my ELC were wonderful, thhe EMCS scary and the VBAC left my child brain damaged and me still unable to sit comfortably years on.
If I had another it would be Elective under a GA.

shagmundfreud · 23/01/2012 20:40

I'm being a bit literal minded OTT, rather than aggressive.

For me the 'bliss' which is associated with childbirth is literal - I had a colossal endorphin high which lasted for many days after the birth, plus felt physically pretty much fine and normal in labour for most of it when I wasn't having contractions.

I've also spent time awake on an operating table having stuff done to my cervix. I can't imagine where the pleasure is in lying immobilised flat on your back while someone does surgery on you - other than the pleasurable feeling of anticipation that you're about to meet your baby. I just don't know where the physical PLEASURE that the word 'bliss' implies would come from in any surgical procedure. Unless it's from the drugs they give you.

mummyanonymous · 23/01/2012 20:40

Ooh, goody, a medal. Will there be some sort of presentation ceremony? What should I wear?

OP posts:
Arachnophobic · 23/01/2012 20:49

You are spot on OP.

Loved both my ECS and my ELCS. They tried to convince me to have a VBAC but I wasn't having any of it!

OTTMummA · 23/01/2012 20:51

My experience was more to do with my mental state, although to be honest physically, being in the operating theatre was very comfortable for me.
The only way i can describe it was that it was a perfect series of moments i know, I felt extremely happy/blissful about the whole procedure, so calm, and comfortable, confident about my care etc.
The healthy baby at the end was the icing on the cake, but it wasn't the sole reason for my happiness that day.
I guess when you have chronic pain, and you know that you will be and are being taken very good care of, you can feel estatic about the brief change in circumstances. Smile

OTTMummA · 23/01/2012 20:55

and on the filp side Shag, i wouldn't of ever had the VB experience that you have had, i wouldn't of been able to give birth with an endorphine high, it certainly wouldn't of been a blissful experience, which is why i value my experince more, it wasn't natures way but it was definatley the correct thing for me to do physically and mentaly.

I am glad you had such a wonderful experience, we both did, but from very different methods.
