To expect a midwife to carry out termination duties?

To think a midwife has to carry out these duties and not claim religious discrimination because she's catholic?

When did this discussion just become about late term abortions, I don't believe the article specified this?

I don't really care what term the abortion is, they should leave their opinions at the door and do their job.

bemybebe · 18/01/2012 23:03

FFS

There was a horrific case in the US a while back when a pregnant woman, who attempted suicide, was charged with murder because she lost the pregnancy.

some people see women as human incubators and not as persons who are allowed to make decisions about their bodies and judge them to the extend that they refuse to care for them

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 18/01/2012 23:05

Because the article is about midwives. Midwives are only involved in late term abortions.

bumbleymummy · 18/01/2012 23:06

If someone does not share the same opinion as you about something does that automatically mean that they are judging you?

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 18/01/2012 23:07

I didn't need the 'term' in that sentence.

Rational · 18/01/2012 23:13

"Because the article is about midwives. Midwives are only involved in late term abortions."

That may well differ between districts. I had an early termination in a maternity ward. I live in Scotland as do the midwives in question. Medical termination can apply to terminations using mifepristone which was administered to me by a midwife.

You're right, I can only be accurate about what happens in my trust, but Id take an educated guess it would be similar to a lot of trusts.

differentnameforthis · 18/01/2012 23:17

but another to go do it just because

What is this 'just because' you keep speaking of, maypole? You think women seek terminations 'just because'?

Yeah, I had a termination 'just because' it was Friday...Hmm. It is never 'just because', please stop saying that because you are making it sound like many women seek termination for no reason, and I find that offensive.

learningtofly · 18/01/2012 23:21

Unfortunately badday there are clinicians across all disciplines of healthcare who are facing disciplinary procedures for a lot less - rightly or wrongly.

learningtofly · 18/01/2012 23:23

That was in reference to your earlier posts about dismissing staff not fulfilling duties - sorry bit slow typing here

Rational · 18/01/2012 23:25

And what do all these pro lifers think should happen to all the women forced to go ahead with the unwanted pregnancy? And what should happen to all the unwanted children that'll be the result? And don't even mention adoption, it's only recently that the government has been looking into the fact that there aren't enough people willing to adopt children already in care. Or should the mothers be forced to keep said children to teach them a lesson to be more careful?

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 18/01/2012 23:28

Thats not the issue here Rational. Refusal to induce abortions by the minority of health workers does not equal unwanted children being borne to the world?

Rational · 18/01/2012 23:30

I was just adding to what differentnameforthis said earlier Wink

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 18/01/2012 23:31

You don't see anyone saying well X is here because everyone refused to give me a termination?

bemybebe · 18/01/2012 23:32

Some people become pregnant through rape - their catholic priests tell them to keep these pregnancies also. Bonkers.

learningtofly · 18/01/2012 23:35

As the case in question is in Scotland does anyone know what impact the outcome (whatever it may be) have for services in the rest of the UK?

spiderslegs · 19/01/2012 00:16

Right I know everyone hates it when people say I haven't read the thread but I haven't, it's 16 pages & I only have so much life, I was brought up a Catholic, went to convent schools, have had three abortions, & if a catholic midwife didn't want to perform them I would fucking well respect her choice.

I would never think that meant she hated me though, in my experience it means she hates the society in which abortion are common place, & why shouldn't she?

It's her choice - as my abortions were mine.

bemybebe · 19/01/2012 00:19

spiders - in the article it is clear that the MW in question were not asked to perform abortions, but line manage post-op care. hth

Moominsarescary · 19/01/2012 00:21

rational it's about late termination because the mw in question worked on the labour ward, which is after 16 weeks

spiderslegs · 19/01/2012 00:28

& believe me, it's not just Catholics - there are all kinds of pro-lifers working in the NHS - witness the Fundamentalist that asked me if I wanted 'to see my baby on the scan' shortly before I took a tablet to expel it & yes - I did, in a scientific way - I was young - I didn't expect to see a foetus with legs, she knew I would though & tried to persuade me not to do it, in fact she ganged up with the shit I was going out with.

I still did it though.

Fuckers.

spiderslegs · 19/01/2012 00:31

Bemby - I don't think they should - I think they should be kept well away from it - it's an ethical question - they should be allowed to say no.

bemybebe · 19/01/2012 00:47

well, i think they should not be allowed to pick and choose parts of the work they fancy... I think they should leave their posts to exercise their beliefs in the more appropriate setting.

we agree to disagree then

spiderslegs · 19/01/2012 01:00

yes Bemby - we will completely agree to disagree, why should someone who does a bloody worthy job for little remuneration be told by a central court that they may no longer practice because a 'part' of their job does not tally with their beliefs?

spiderslegs · 19/01/2012 01:03

Utterly ridiculous - I have no idea what you do, but if someone in a managerial position asked you to do something that was an anathema to you - would you do it - because it was 'your job'? I hope not.
