I know that this post may have some mixed reviews and may even get me slated but I can,t help it.
Someone I know although she is a genuine case her and her husband have as much as me and dh coming in and with a brand new car thrown in for good measure.
I can only dream of a new car and I work my tripe off 5 days a week as well as dh whilst some people can sit at home and get the same income coming in it seems really unfair.

so Boys, the DWP is lying when they estimate half a million jobs but 3 million unemployed? Who'd have thought.

AmberLeaf · 08/01/2012 20:17

Good post Indie

Birdsgottafly · 08/01/2012 20:18

Kitchen-why spend extra money on the system than is being given out in benefits. That isn't how government departments were set up to work. The aim is to cut waste.

Boys- it doesn't actually save the country any money if people move off benefits and go into tax credit top up, jobs. The problem is that people can not afford to live on the wages, that should be questioned. The ever rising cost of living doesn't help.

The level of poverty in working households in the UK is a disgrace, we come 9th on the world child poverty map, the majority of those households are working.

DanJARMouse · 08/01/2012 20:19

Re "no jobs" - where I live, there is NO JOBS. I have been looking for 5 months. 1 job I applied for resulted in a response saying they had over 500 applications for the 1 vacancy.

Hence I am having to uproot my family, and move 700 miles away where, according to the internet searches, there ARE jobs.

My husband is disabled, not on DLA but the Army equivalent..... War Pension with Motability supplement. Yes we have a motability vehicle as he cannot walk the distances most people can.

I need to work, not only for my own sanity, but because life on benefits is bloody hard work. We literally live week to week, no savings, and no spare cash for anything most of you wouldnt think about spending on (starbucks/magazines/lunch out etc)

So, over the next 6 months, I am having to subject my family to strict food budget, spending less on the gas and electric than we should, and cut out EVERYTHING that is not essential, just so I can raise the £1200 needed to hire a van and move our sorry asses down south again.

Life before disability was good. Life now is shite. People who begrudge the benefits system should count themselves bloody lucky they dont need the help.

Birdsgottafly · 08/01/2012 20:20

In the papers today, was the report from reploy (the charity to get disabled people into work) that funding and support for disabled workers was being cut, resulting in job loses of up to half a million for disabled people.

KalSkirata · 08/01/2012 20:21

House prices have got to come down. Thats why people need tax credit top ups even up to the average wage of 24K. Its ridiculous that the taxpayer/Govt is subsidising landlords buying a house and stupidly high house prices.
I'd forcily reduce prices (if I was the dictator) back to 1999 levels. Then people on an average wage could aggord rent/mortgage without needing tax credits (which didnt exist in 1999)

TotemPole · 08/01/2012 20:27

Ninja, we don't get DLA. I was just explaining why I don't think it's such a good idea for some disabilities.

madmouse · 08/01/2012 20:28

My almost 4 year old ds is disabled. He cannot walk without a frame or adult assistance and needs extra stuff all the time, to help him develop as well as possible.

Yes we have a motability car because he gets higher rate mobility DLA. We need a large boot as his walking frame doesn't fold and often we need to take the buggy and the walker. Plus for him to ride his special trike in the park the trike needs to go in the car too. So yes, ooh, we have such a lovely new car Hmm

For ds to walk or ride in the park we need to drive to the park as otherwise he will be too tired by the time we get there.

His trike is something else: I managed to get it second hand for £200 (new they start at £850). It was at the other side of the country and cost another £60 for a courier and £70 for an additional backrest from the manufacturer. That's £330 for a trike. How much is a little bike with stabilisers from Halfords or Tesco??

Oh and he has a tiny little glove to hold his weak hand against the handle bar. Cost? £45.

The extra cost of disability is real. That's what DLA is for.

Anyone wanting to have all that extra money? ds would be delighted to swap. He'll throw in his blue badge for free...

expatinscotland · 08/01/2012 20:29

Absolutely, JARM! We're having to move to be closer to the hospital where our daughter will need treatment and monitoring until she is an adult (she'll actually need monitoring forever, as she has an adult form of cancer).

But I guess people like us deserve to be punished even more for being such 'scoungers' and should only exist rather than have any quality of life.

molepom · 08/01/2012 20:29

I'm not suure wether to laugh or cry at this thread.

IndieSkies - the percentage of Disability benefit fraud is low, If I remember correctley the figure is 0.07%. If only I can rememeber where I've seen the figure...

While you are all getting pissed off at the OP, I'm linking this petition that needs to be signed as many people as possible.

It may possible open up a few eyes as well.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 08/01/2012 20:30

Birds, I'm all for cutting waste. But the reason that extra money should be spent in certain areas is because there are people that cannot get what they need and and are existing instead of living.

DanJARMouse · 08/01/2012 20:31

Well of course Expat (nearly used your RL name there!)

We arent allowed the good stuff. Only the crap the rest of them think we should have. Like we dont have enough crap anyway.

What I would give to have a healthy husband, who was still serving his country in the Army..... jeez, even life as an Army Wife was better than this crap.

Hope wee girlie has a better night tonight Expat xxx

why is this thread still here, I am shocked that it hasn't been deleted.
but then disibilty bashing seems to be allowed on mn

WhingingNinja · 08/01/2012 20:39

i love the idea that those who are disabled should be paid the NMW.

the NMW that even the government doesn't think is enough to provide for a family which is why they supplement it for those poor un disabled people. tax credits anyone?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/01/2012 20:41

Jesus christ.

Some people are the lowest of the low. Are people so venal that they begrudge those with the most needs, the ones in constant pain and physical trauma, the basic right to sustenance and support?

flamegirl77 · 08/01/2012 20:46

And people say we don't get to know our neighbours any more! Clearly many posters on this thread have kindly taken it upon themselves to become familiar with every details of their acquaintances' finances, health and family relationships. Good for you!

Boysrstupid · 08/01/2012 20:46

I'm currently claiming benefits. I have 2DCs to 2XPs and a 3rd on the way to yet another beautiful liar. I live in a council house, own my car and I have a 50" Plasma.
Envy me, Hate away, I don't mind at all. Obviously I am living the dream.

fallenpetal · 08/01/2012 20:47

All I can say is try actually being the disabled single parent and deal with the crap I have to just to get the help I am entitled too, not to mention the discrimination I meet every where I go. Believe me I wish day after day I were well enough to work.
Oh and I am still expected to look for work but seeing as I am disabled and unreliable due to the nature of my illness I have not even had an interview in 3 years and only 2 no thank you letters. Most just bin my applications with out a second thought. There are just too many able bodied people to compete with.

Mine is not an easy life

But - I do understand the the OP - please understand though I am very very grateful for every penny I get and I do as much volunteer work as I am able to repay.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 20:47

No not necessarily GOML, they just want them to have to "apply" for it, justify it and wait nervously to see if they are deemed worthy. So not so bad.

flamegirl77 · 08/01/2012 20:48

BTW any one of us 'decent hard working families' could find ourselves on benefits at the drop of a hat. Food for thought.

WhingingNinja · 08/01/2012 20:52

Fallenpetal - please do not allow ignorants like some of those posting on this thread make you feel that you should bow and scrape in response for the money you receive from the state in order to feed yourself and children.

you do not need to justify yourself to these people.

Boysrstupid · 08/01/2012 20:52

Forgot to mention car bought and paid for years ago. Plasma a gift from terminally ill mother & currently claiming because I lost my public sector job in the cuts.
Not apologising for the unprotected sex with wankers though it's my only vice.

nothingoldcanstay · 08/01/2012 20:52

I haven't read anyone begrudging anyone. I have heard people in work complain that their circumstances fall short of someone who can't work for whatever reason.

I know 2 mums who both have cars provided because their children have ASD.Of course they need a car because their children can't get to school without it,children can't use buses or walk to shops etc. However neither work so effectively the car is used for school runs and weekends (children all school age). Why is there not a system so that others in difficulty can lease a car cheaply. I had to give up work because the car became totally unreliable (causing problems at work) and eventually gave up. I simply didn't have the funds to buy a whole new car even secondhand and how the heck was I supposed to even go round and look at for one TBH. A means tested car scheme could be used for everyone. Then we wouldn't have to argue over who is the more deserving.

fallenpetal · 08/01/2012 20:52

Yes flame girl exactly - 6 years age this was a normal house hold with 2 incomes - in the matter of 6 weeks it was no income - very scary
