...to not understand why Greggs sausage rolls are so bad?

I've just seen yet another thread in which Greggs sausage rolls are deemed bad food for toddlers (mentioned along with McDonalds, fruit shoots etc.)

Am I missing something? I really don't understand... Surely they are just pastry and sausagemeat? Are they any worse than other sausage rolls?

I'm from Gosforth too! I remember buying bread and stotties from the very 1st Greggs on the High street.
They're not the same now.

You missed the Great Jam Samwidge Affaire :)

I have just eaten another one.

Soo good, now for a chocolate donut.

lemonmuffin · 20/12/2011 16:00

What's wrong with the supermarket tiny sausage rolls insommnia? I didn't think they were too bad in terms of fat, additives etc.

TheChristmasCountessOlenska · 20/12/2011 16:08

I think they are revolting personally but if DD expressed an interest she would be allowed one. Everything in moderation.

Also, toddlers munching on anything in a buggy whilst in town looks a bit common. It could be hand milled bread and organic hummus but once it's smeared round a toddler's face it just looks yuk.

(I am guilty of handing out a constant steam of snacks to buy a bit of peace in Topshop btw!)

GoingForGoalWeight · 20/12/2011 16:40

Eating in the street is common IMO.

oenophilia · 20/12/2011 16:52

I've been in the factory & seen them being made. Not had one since (about 10 yrs)!

LostVagueness · 20/12/2011 16:58

It would appear that if you dare feed your children Fruit Shoots, Greggs, McDonnalds or Haribo, most Mumsnetters think you should have your children taken away from you. Granted, if you feed them this for every meal it would have a negative (huge fat children with no energy) impact but once in a while is unlikely to turn them into Jabba the Hut.

My children have of course never seen a McDonnalds, Greggs, Fruit Shoot or Haribo in their lives. They are only ever dressed in Boden and have at least one gay friend, one ethnic minority friend and are addicted to cous cous.

SusanneLinder · 20/12/2011 16:59

Steakbakes ARE far better than sausage rolls. That and ther tomato soup-delishus.

I now know what I am having for lunch tomorrow slurps

KatieScarlettsCrackers · 20/12/2011 17:00

DD was the one who introduced me to the wonder of Greggs.

One bite of her sausage roll and I was hooked, maaaan.

housemum · 20/12/2011 17:35

I live in Basingstoke. Not the hugest of places, but we have 3 Greggs. Not exactly a luxury shopping experience. Sigh.

(Greggs should be banned from pumping the smell out though, you only have to walk past and you crave them even though they are greasy and over salted).

Whatmeworry · 20/12/2011 18:53

Organic hand rolled couscous I hope....and one ethnic minority of each sex, shame on you!

And then there is the "I take health food to birthday parties for my PFCs" brigade...

FlangelinaBallerina · 20/12/2011 18:55

I had to have a steak bake today, this thread had influenced me so much. Greedy foetus is incredibly demanding.

RockingBEYONDtheXmasTree · 20/12/2011 19:06

My DS (15m) loves tea.
He's never had a Greggs sausage roll though cause I think they are ming.

MabelLucyAttwell · 20/12/2011 19:11

I never eat sausages now. I used to like crisply fried, deliciously brown sausages until I heard a radio progamme with an article about what goes into them and burgers.

Yes, it's mechanically recovered meat (as a previous poster said) but what mechanically recovered 'meat'. It was described in the programme as being rubbiush meat like anuses and eyelids and other undesirable bits. Ugh! Never again will I eat a sausage or burger unless I've made it myself.

I'm glad I am not alone. We were tortured persuaded at school not to eat in the street in school uniform. We spent so much time in school uniform that we just learned not to eat in the street because it's common. I'm sooo conscious of it when I eat an ice cream at the seaside in the Summer. .

GoingForGoalWeight · 20/12/2011 20:49

My parents stance on eating in the street was that it is common. I didn't have Coca-Cola or a hamburger until i was thirteen. Never allowed chewing gum, bubble gum. Bloody boring :(

I've made up for it since Xmas Grin

i'm 25 stone:(

monkeyLFDTwench · 20/12/2011 23:25

My dad had a Greggs sausage roll the other day and said it was revoltingly salty. I had a sandwich from there once though and it was delicious - tuna salad sub type thing.

Like greenbananas we never get to have any bakery items when we have the dcs with us due to ds3's nut allergy. Apparently McDonalds is about the most reliable nut free restaurant, but we've never been brave enough to test it! We end up taking packed lunches everywhere Sad.

mrsjay · 20/12/2011 23:41

IN RL nobody gives a toss about sausage rolls/fruitshoots only on forums where they can sit and be all judgey and tut , ive never had a conversation with any other person about the fat content of sausage rolls except on parenting forums , we didnt have a greggs when mine were toddlers but popping in for a sausage roll or a pie isnt the end of the world ,

GoingForGoalWeight · 21/12/2011 04:05

Fruit shoots are disgusting.

OhdearNigel · 06/01/2012 12:32

"According to DH they were a fab way of turning 10K into 20K so please do keep going to Greggs "

Interesting - how long did that take ? DH likes to play around with a few stocks and shares (the post-collapse going for a song Northern Rock investment was not one of his better days) and as the Eastbourne branch is always queued out of the door I can see why your DH has done well.

Ghastly shop but if there's money in it......

SarahBumBarer · 06/01/2012 12:39

I crave Greggs sausage rolls when pregnant.

Greggs is a northern based chain which expanded south when it acquired Bakers Oven a few years ago. It has probably not made it as far as Devon yet. Give it time - soon you will have the Greggs sausage roll and a very unique take on Devonshire Cream Teas no doubt! Grin

OhdearNigel · 06/01/2012 12:56

Deep fried clotted cream ?

There are 7 Greggs in Sunderland city centre alone.

Ooh - I never get to shamelessly namedrop but here goes:

My boss is a bit of a joker and when he had his job interview, he made a reference to something being "about as rank as a Greggs sausage roll". Ho ho ho...

Neglecting to notice that the founder of Greggs is one of our Trustees and was therefore interviewing him... certainly proving that the Gregg in question has a sense of humour!

It does make me laugh: he (Mr Gregg) is one of the nicest chaps going and has done a vast amount for environmental charities - and he's a bit of a renowned cook which does often make me wonder what the sausage rolls were like originally.

Ooh, Macaroni Cheese pies from the Lancaster Uni campus shop - possibly my fondest memory of being a student.
