...to not understand why Greggs sausage rolls are so bad?

I've just seen yet another thread in which Greggs sausage rolls are deemed bad food for toddlers (mentioned along with McDonalds, fruit shoots etc.)

Am I missing something? I really don't understand... Surely they are just pastry and sausagemeat? Are they any worse than other sausage rolls?

RaraGigglePixie - Greggs started i the Northeast, iirc, which would explain why there's more of them up here.

(We don't have greggs in our village - we have Peter's which is greggs on the cheap. The Warburtons bread the convenience store next door sells is a lot nicer and less additive laden than their stuff)

BlissfulMistletoe · 19/12/2011 19:22

I Love ggregs, great hangover food

rogersmellyonthetelly · 19/12/2011 19:23

They are known as chav dummies in this area (not my choice of words I hasten to add, I hate the word) Bottle of tea is a common occurrence too.
My kids both loved them and I had no problem with them having one for lunch if I was out and couldn't find anything healthier. That sAid, never while they were in the pushchair, that would have made a mess on the fabrics and I was totally bloody obsessed a bit precious about that

HandMini · 19/12/2011 19:24

My DP loves Greggs. Their sausage rolls are yum, but as others have said, probably full of dodgy chemicals and dubious bits of "meat".

Bottle of tea for a baby?? Have I read that right? Sounds crazy...

MrsSleepy · 19/12/2011 19:24

What's worse - A Greggs sausage roll or a McDonalds?

I'm voting Greggs

breatheslowly · 19/12/2011 19:25

Have you tried one? I did (as an experiment after hearing so much from MN). It was revolting and very salty.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 19/12/2011 19:26

They're so bad because they taste so damn good.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 19/12/2011 19:26

I actually craved Gregg's sausage rolls when I was pregnant with DS Xmas Blush. He seems fine though Xmas Grin.

Really want to try a sausage and bean bake now - never even heard of them until I read this thread.

greenbananas · 19/12/2011 19:30

I take DS to McDonalds Blush

Like I said earlier, DS has severe food allergies. McDonalds is the only place in our small city centre where he can eat a 'safe' meal involving protein, fat and carbohydrate. I know it's disgustingly salty and full of sugar, but I try to balance that out at home.

I hate the judgy looks I get when I am feeding DS a hamburger-without-mustard. Sometimes I feel like marching up to the judgy people who are mudging each other and staring at me and telling them exactly why DS is eating McDonalds, and asking if they can suggest anything better!

(sorry, that little rant is perhaps completely beside the point of this thread Blush)

Conveniently KenDodds, there is a Greggs right opposite Fenwicks window. Bet the smell brings in a few waifs and strays. They must do a roarinf trade during this timd of year.

Do try a festive bake if you can, they are very naice.

natation · 19/12/2011 19:33

Whoever thinks Greggs sausage rolls are bad has obviously never lived in a country where there are no Greggs. I've been over 12 months without a Greggs sausage roll and am travelling to London after Christmas, not to visit the sales, not to give our children a holiday, no we are going to the UK for Greggs sausage rolls, and I shall add cornish pasties and some good British Indian food. I now have a terrible pain in the tummy, just thinking of Greggs.

Kayano · 19/12/2011 19:36

I don't understand why southern Greggs do not do Stotties

We have to bring bags down to Portsmouth relatives when we visit from the north

Greggs Stotties ummmm

icooksocks · 19/12/2011 19:38

Greggs sausage rolls are bloody lovely. Not great for 6 month olds, but otherwise lovely.

Kayano · 19/12/2011 19:38

We also now have a GREGGS MOMENTS sit down cafe in Northumberland street in Newcastle. As well as the standard one opposite fenwicks window lol

KenDoddsDadsDog · 19/12/2011 19:45

Ah , we have a Greggs Moments in the Bridges too. Your Greggs moment is likely to be enhanced by the dulcet tones of "ger over 'ere our xxx or a'll gi ye a clip"

Hippymum89 · 19/12/2011 19:45

I just noticed today our first Greggs in Scarborough, went all quivery Grin

Hippymum89 · 19/12/2011 19:47

Will have to try a sauage roll now, although I'm a bit scared! May try it out on DD (6) first Wink

NorfolkNCarolSingers · 19/12/2011 19:59

You can tell they are full of greasy badness when the bag is see through after eating the sausage roll but my word it's good eating on a blustery day on the sea front!

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 19/12/2011 20:05

Cheers OP.

Had no appetite for three days and now I want a Greggs sausage roll. Greggs is shut.

FlangelinaBallerina · 19/12/2011 20:06

SoftKitty, me too! I am 8 weeks pregnant, and just loving them at the moment. I fully concede that they're fucking awful though, and should probably be banned. Incidentally, I'm off all other pork at the moment, it's knocking me sick. Greggs sausage rolls, though, are fine. Maybe that tells us something about what the 'meat' in them actually is?!

Hippymum, don't do it. They're too delicious, and you'll be back for more. Save yourself.

BarfTheHeraldAngelsHeave · 19/12/2011 21:13

Mmmmm sausage and bean bakes....

I also have a soft spot for the Festive Bake too. Even when Ihad one that was almost all stuffing balls.

soandsosmummy · 19/12/2011 21:23

Wish I hadnt read this thread because now nothing but a greggs sausage roll and one of their lovely cheese and onion pasties will do and I want them NOW.

Hmmm the Greggs in city cetre opens late perhaps I could wake up dd drag her in on the bus and fufill my cravings (or maybe not)

FairyOnTheXmasTreeMcFlouncer · 19/12/2011 21:31

All bollocks. The Mumsnet Against Greggs campaign is purely so -we- you can all feel superior to chav parents.

Greggs sausgae rolls are bloody marvellous. And their chicken bakes are better still.

FairyOnTheXmasTreeMcFlouncer · 19/12/2011 21:31

Buggered up my strikethrough there Sad

jendifa · 19/12/2011 21:32

I've heard that Newcastle has a 24-hour Greggs. Maybe pop up there is craving one now?
