'Santa Claus' is an Americanism isn't it? He was always 'Father Christmas' to me and this seems to be dying out.

Yeah, I know, I need bigger things to worry about.

YANBU - I think it's an American mixture of FC and Saint Nicholas (who comes on the 6th of December)

MissMerrynder · 14/12/2011 20:27

Aha, now, to me, "Father Christmas" is just posh. It's always been Santa.

(am 30+ btw!)

DramaInPyjamas · 14/12/2011 20:28

He has always been called 'Santa' in Scotland and in Ireland as far as I know.

Hollyfoot · 14/12/2011 20:28

It's always been Father Christmas to us, too.

Get0rf · 14/12/2011 20:29

I don't think it is necessarily an americansim (nowt wrong with those in my book anyway) but imo just a more modern version.

I much much prefer Father Christmas.

pinkyp · 14/12/2011 20:29

Yabu! I take it your old

laptopdancer · 14/12/2011 20:30

Depends where you are from...father Christmas is just an anglicised version of Santa Klaus to me

LaFilleSurLePont · 14/12/2011 20:30

We have this every year, usually several times a year. I've been waiting for it.

YABVU. It's always been Santa to me,and I'm certainly not American,I'm Scottish. It's generally Santa here and has been for a long time. It may also be common in other parts of the UK too.

I can't understand why people get so worked up over what others call him.

Matsikula · 14/12/2011 20:30

It was always Santa Claus in our house. Perhaps because my Mum is Irish. And at least Santa has a respectable lineage. Father Christmas is the newcomer, if you ask me.

usualsuspect · 14/12/2011 20:31

Waits for santa is common posts

I don't care either way

AlexandraMary · 14/12/2011 20:31

Santa in Scotland and Ireland and parts of N England, FC in England.

No, it's not an americanism.

WhatWouldLeoDo · 14/12/2011 20:32

YABVU. I'm Scottish too and it's always been Santa for me.

redlac · 14/12/2011 20:32

Its Santa in Scotland - I don't think I've ever heard him called father Christmas up here

usualsuspect · 14/12/2011 20:32

Whats wrong with Americanisms anyway?

NinkyNonker · 14/12/2011 20:32

Father Christmas to me.

frasersmummy · 14/12/2011 20:33

another scottish mner who was visited by santa

laptopdancer · 14/12/2011 20:34

I always think of Santa as being from Saint,as in Nikolaus,so calling him"father" Christmas just doesnt sit right with me

Backtobedlam · 14/12/2011 20:34

I've always used Father Christmas but often type Santa as it's quicker, and when I see FC abbreviation I always think 'fingers crossed' rather than the big, jolly man, dressed in red...or is that just me?!

Get0rf · 14/12/2011 20:36

I don't think it is common. Blimey do people think that!

I just think it is what he is called in more modern parts of the world (grew up in the arse end of nowhere so he (he! like he is real) was always Father Christmas to me.

I think whatever you have grown up with sounds right.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 14/12/2011 20:37

I shouldn't let it bother me but I am a bit fed up with people correcting my "Santa" with "Father Christmas" here. Can I just say that I am Scottish and saying "Santa" in Scotland and should be left to do so in peace.

I am quite happy for the hundreds of English people around me to call him "Father Christmas" but not for them to correct me when I am using my own dialect or whatever it is called.

Rant over. Thank you for letting me get that one out! Xmas Grin

TapselteerieO · 14/12/2011 20:37

I only heard of Father Christmas when I started coming on mn - FC is completely foreign to me, it doesn't piss me off though.

Santa is not an Americanism.

YABU.

I've read on previous annual FC v SC threads ,that some think santa is common
