to loathe 'Santa'?

'Santa Claus' is an Americanism isn't it? He was always 'Father Christmas' to me and this seems to be dying out.

Yeah, I know, I need bigger things to worry about.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 22:41

och aye, redlac. Grin and she sodding well says Santa.

Parietal · 14/12/2011 22:43

I'm not keen on Santa. I grew up with F Christmas, but dd insists on Santa from nursery and I can't make her change her mind. :-(

brandrethmupp · 14/12/2011 22:44

DD calls him Santa Christmas. I thought the thread was about loathing the whole concept of the fellow and was about to heartily concur. Perhaps I'm a killjoy but I hate having to lie to dd for the whole of December. When she was 3 she decided he wasn't real but I had to keep the pretence up so she didn't tell her cousins. Now she believes because the sherry and mince pie the cousins put out was half munched last Xmas morning.

CocktailQueen · 14/12/2011 22:45

Yes! It does feel weird to say Father Christmas, not Santa. Like making myself say 'sofa' instead of 'couch' or 'living room' instead of 'lounge'. Xmas Hmm

wigglybeezer · 14/12/2011 22:46

Another vote for Santa here, and I'm fairly posh (and Scottish). We also say High school here, in fact I was quite chuffed to fing out that Dh's old (state) high school is more than two hundred years older than Eton and has always been called a high school, so there.

The annual mumsnet Haloween and Santa debates are getting a bit repetitive, although I bet alex Salmond loves them as I suspect the displays of english parochialism tip a few over into voting for the Scot Nats.

If anyone is interested in a very funny take on dutch christmas traditions they should listen to David Sedaris's radio talk about them.

susiedaisy · 14/12/2011 22:47

Father Christmas for us!Smile

wigglybeezer · 14/12/2011 22:47

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 22:50

i'll ask her, wiggly, and report back. they did sound excellent, actually.
in gaidhlig education they certainly refer to secondary school as ardsgoil, ard meaning high or tall.

mistressploppy · 14/12/2011 22:51

Yup - am posh, Scottish and say Santa.

Also interested to hear titles/authors for historical jock/dutch novels Xmas Grin

mollymawk · 14/12/2011 22:52

Well we say Father Christmas, and we are definitely plebs.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 22:53

Megatron · 14/12/2011 22:54

EatMeDates · 14/12/2011 22:59

Working class Londoner and it was always FC when I was growing up. Nobody we knew called him Santa. Irish grandparents also called him FC. Not that I give two hoots, really. My kids say Santa. Whatevs.

wigglybeezer · 14/12/2011 23:02

We could really mix it up and restart the Grandma v's Granny debate while we are at it.

TapselteerieO · 14/12/2011 23:02

Great post Aitch. Xmas Smile < Santa hat?

GoingForGoalWeight · 14/12/2011 23:04

wigglybeezer · 14/12/2011 23:11

By the way, do any fellow scots know what my user name means, i'm a bit worried that my DB was having me on when he told me it.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 23:16

didn't bing hitler do a thing about wiggly beezers? on that kings theatre album?

wigglybeezer · 14/12/2011 23:19

That might be where DB got it from, he told me it means hairy caterpillar, I've always been a wee bit worried it actually means something rude.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 14/12/2011 23:21

i think bing hitler blurred the lines somewhat.
