To refuse to use my parents' made-up name for their house...

OK, so they used to live in a house which didn't have a number and had a name. My kids would get excited about going to blah blah cottage., Now they have moved somewhere where the house does have a number. But they miss having a name for their house, so they've given it a name. I just feel naff using the name. I mean, the house already has a number! And it's not like a massive road, there are only 6 houses in it, and it's a 'court' so it sounds quite nice anyway.

AIBU and should I just swallow my pride and call the house by it's new 'name'? Or should I just say we're going to visit blah blah court and address post to no.6 blah blah court?

Tough one. On balance YANBU. Super twee to make up a name for your house but if that's what they want there's no real harm in it. Cringey, though.

I used to live in a 'blah blah cottage' that also had a number.
Everybody used both because the cottage had a plaque with name and number on it. So it made sense.

Made up a silly answer at first, but actually - their house, their rules. Although it'll cost them £150 to get the post office to officially change the address!

I'm considering giving my house a made up name before I come to sell. It definitely improved the price.

My dad made up a name for his house. I think it's totally random, must google at some point. I don't use it on post, just the number.

I think in my dads case he is trying to be a snob bless him.

Don't use name and number on addresses! It's beyond naff.

And when you're talking about going to someone's house - would you use the name? Don't you just say "we're going to X's house"?

I can't think of any other occasions when you'd need to use the name, really.

My great aunt used to address post to my grandmother to 'Lake View Cottage'.

My grandmother's house was a tiny old 4 room cottage in the west of ireland which had a fairly distant glimpse of a lake out the front.... used to cause hysterics when letters arrived with 'Lake View Cottage' written on them

The house my parents bought a few years ago has a tiny snatch of a view of the same lake if you go up to the guest bedroom and stand on a chair.... I tried to convince them to call it Lake View in honour of my grandmother's house but they declined
