To refuse to use my parents' made-up name for their house...

OK, so they used to live in a house which didn't have a number and had a name. My kids would get excited about going to blah blah cottage., Now they have moved somewhere where the house does have a number. But they miss having a name for their house, so they've given it a name. I just feel naff using the name. I mean, the house already has a number! And it's not like a massive road, there are only 6 houses in it, and it's a 'court' so it sounds quite nice anyway.

AIBU and should I just swallow my pride and call the house by it's new 'name'? Or should I just say we're going to visit blah blah court and address post to no.6 blah blah court?

jajas

I think posties enjoy the occasional challenge. I still have the envelope sent to some friends of my Mom.

'The man who has the green tractor in the large field past the church and the bunch of trees. xxxxxx village. xxxxxx shire.

(They'd helped a couple of tourists back many years ago.)

My house only has a name - its fab!

perplexedpirate · 13/12/2011 22:17

I am now thinking of naming my house The Old Blah.

YellowDinosaur · 13/12/2011 22:18

The best house name I've ever seen (until joy den Grin wtaf Grin) is 'Ersanmine' Grin In Essex GrinGrin

GrendelsMum · 13/12/2011 22:21

My house has a name, but seems to be known to everyone locally as 'The Old Jones' Place' - they moved out 10 years ago. I don't have much hope of it being known as 'The Grendels Place' for another fifty years or so.

There is a lovely house near me that I coveted until it was bought by a couple of Chelsea Tractor owners, they are quite amusingly "richer than YAAAAAOOUUUUUU" :o

They named the house "Chateau Neuf Du Pape" complete with an (apparantly) genuine sign from a vinyard in France as the nameplate on the drive :o

Bogeyface · 13/12/2011 22:24

I think I spelt that wrong, but you get the idea!

Mandy2003 · 13/12/2011 22:33

Friends of mine lived in a caravan on their building site. They called it "Dungrindin" (not as rude as it sounds - their job was to drill and grind concrete!!)

Bogeyface · 13/12/2011 22:38

Just spoken to mum (MUM- DONT ring at 10:30 when I know you go to bed at 10pm! It makes me think something has happened!) and she reminded me of my aunts house name.

I cant give it but think of a house name made from bits of the familys names, as was the 70's stylee. So Emma, John, Maureen and David would be Joemavid, except theirs is nowhere near as classy :o

wilkos · 13/12/2011 22:43

my mum and dad wanted to call their house "seaview"

he thought it would be funny, seeing as they live 30 miles inland just outside Guildford Hmm

ROFL about Seaview. Brilliant.

Bogeyface · 13/12/2011 22:49

My parents have a photo of a hotel they stayed at called seaview in Blackpool for their honeymoon, it was a busride to the prom and the only way you saw the sea was if you bought a bucketful back from the beach, which my dad did, hence the photo :o

I have never lived in a home with a name and find a lot of them a bit embarrassing. I certainly wouldn't announce "Oh I'm off to Providence Barn", I would just say "I'm going to ...'s house".

I let out a massive snigger at Joyce and Dennis living in the Joy Den though!

edam · 13/12/2011 22:56

My mother's house has a lovely name - it's on the deeds and was the original designation. But over the past 200 years other houses have been built around it do it's now no.19 something st - name hasn't been used for decades, sadly. And it's not grand enough to bring the name back without looking very foolish.

CrotchFlakes · 14/12/2011 11:41

When I see Dunvegan, I think of Dunroamin and want to waft bacon sandwiches as I walk past.

Whatmeworry · 14/12/2011 11:56

A friend of mine had "Millstone Cottage" :o

boschy · 14/12/2011 11:59

I regularly drive past a house called Windy Bottom... :o

IggyPup · 14/12/2011 12:13

My husband and I thought it would be lovely to combine our names for our new home. He is called Donall and my name is Anne. We changed our minds when it came out as Anal......so number 38 Acacia Avenue it is then.

ShowOfHands · 14/12/2011 12:21

My friend's childhood home is named after the whole family. Can't put the whole thing on here as his dw is a MNer I think but think Teshisamax (Terry, Shirley, Sam, Max) type affair. I had to not spit at the sign every time I visited.

There's a village local to here with 3 Dunroamins. I laugh quietly to myself as I pass each one.

ShowOfHands · 14/12/2011 12:24

Ooh Bogey, wonder if there's more than one family with a ridiculously named house?

Our last two houses had names only. Poplar Cottage and Waters Edge. Both completely lacking in imagination but the names were on the original deeds of both.

Jenstar21 · 14/12/2011 12:32

People in my mum and dad's street have called theirs 'Naedoshnoo'. They aren't very nice, so we laugh at them (behind their backs).

cazboldy · 14/12/2011 12:45

ours (rented)

is The New Bungalow, The street.........

it's so shit - and it's not even new

ZZZenAgain · 14/12/2011 12:50

I really like Ersanmine

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 14/12/2011 13:10

When we bought it our house had a name but we realised that officially with Royal Mail it only had a number. Our road is very long and the numbering is confusing at best so adding a name into the mix would be a nightmare. So we just use the number. There is a sign up with the name on ("Fairwater" if you're interested) which we have left that but I never use it in our address. A couple of things where we took over from previously occupier such as TV license come with name on but that's all. I do find it rather twee to add a name to a house that already has a number. And I think you can chose to use the name or not as you see fit. To be honest I imagine the Royal Mail much prefer it if you stick to the minimum info on a letter that allows it to be delivered.
