AIBU?

To refuse to use my parents' made-up name for their house...

OK, so they used to live in a house which didn't have a number and had a name. My kids would get excited about going to blah blah cottage., Now they have moved somewhere where the house does have a number. But they miss having a name for their house, so they've given it a name. I just feel naff using the name. I mean, the house already has a number! And it's not like a massive road, there are only 6 houses in it, and it's a 'court' so it sounds quite nice anyway.

AIBU and should I just swallow my pride and call the house by it's new 'name'? Or should I just say we're going to visit blah blah court and address post to no.6 blah blah court?

There's a house called 'Neuk' in my area. It's Scottish for something very mundane, but Dutch posters will understand why it makes me smile. Wink

we have one near us called Thistledome, which I always thought was Thistle Dome until by father pronounced it "this 'll do me". d'oh.
My mother's little house has always been known by its number until we found some old deeds and discovered it was once named "Rohan Cottage" which i think is rather nice and reminds me of "Riders of the Rohan" in Lord of the Rings.

My house has a name, a common one but without the word old in front of it. We also have a number.
We use the number for bank statements etc and the name for personal letters and giving directions

I never knew using a name and a number for your house was considered naff Xmas Shock. Is this a new pronouncement or have I been unaware all these years?

I think Providence Barn sounds lovely. I think you should humour them.

Many years ago, some friends used to live in a house in a village called:

The House,
The Street,
xxxxxx

Just had to share that one.

My mum lives in a little hamlet with no street names or house numbers. Her house is called The New House. It is about 200 years old. There are some new builds from the 70's and 80's but her house is still The New House.

Love Casa Bevron. We used to pass a house which had a big, lacy four poster bed if we ever got the bus into town. We always said 'Casa Bevron' as we passed it Smile

See, I'd ban naming houses (on streets with other houses) if I could. I've had a few jobs that involved finding houses and its hard enough on roads with all the houses in number order, its much worse when half the houses are "imaginitively" named.

If they're getting rid of the number, point out to them that it might lead to delays in ambulance crew finding them etc...

When we were kids we had a holiday home on a site, my parents neighbours used their names to name theirs, Micjoy.

I suggested mum and dad do the same, they owned a bakery at the time and mums' name is Brenda, dads' name is Adrian so I thought Bread would work well, unfortunately they were having none of it, kill joys!

Our house has a name, not a number. We're not posh - that's just how it is where we live. I get irritated when my sister addresses post to us with "housename" written like that, in inverted commas, as if it is some sort of affectation, instead of what. the. house. is. called.

I reckon if she wrote to the Queen she'd address it as "Buckingham Palace" making Her Maj feel a ponce for not living at 1, The Mall instead.

Name and number is naff because if your house has a name it's implied that it's individual enough to be known by name only ie, "one off" houses, or historical houses, and if it already has a number and is then given a name it's obviously unnecessary.
We used to be the only house on our street. V old house with a v old name. We used to get mail with random numbers on it obviously added in a panic by some data entry bod somewhere.
I can't help but cringe when I see The Old Blah, 67 Blah Street.

Hey, I don't make the rules...

I used to live in a house with A Name and it was a pain in the arse. To add to confusion there was no street name.

Had to spell it to everyone (we didnt name it, was old farm house) and we still had mis spellings, thankfully our postie was great and as there was only 6 houses in our post code area he knew it was meant for us.

I'd love a house with a name. A barn with a name sounds good to me. LOL at some of the names here.

Surely all houses with names had their names invented for them at some point or other. I've lived in two houses with names both pretty mundane though
