To call the police?

Ok so a random one.

There is a young asian guy that lives up the road from us (street at right angles to ours so not really 'neighbours')

I have only seen him once or twice, and this is only because is he is quite precious(?) with his car, and if he cant park it in his "space" outside of his house then he would park outside of ours, so he could see if from his window. It's only an 04 Kia type thing, but anyways.

All of the above isnt really relevant, so...

The car hasn't moved since the beginning of October, possibly longer. Not an inch. Havent seen the guy either. And of course the more I think about it the more I think it's all a bit weird? I know he lives alone, and now have visions of him dead in there being eaten by his cat or something, although to be fair I don't even think he has a cat.

So, do I ring the police, and tell them there is a car in our street belonging to a neighbour that hasn't moved for over 2 months, and risk sounding like a complete loon-- or do I mind my own business?

I'd risk it. Better safe than sorry.

aldiwhore · 10/12/2011 08:39

Can't you knock on his door under the pretext of delivering Christmas Cards or something?

pigletmania · 10/12/2011 08:39

You could do, ask them for their advice? Is he elderly, or do you know if he has an illness

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2011 08:40

Can you go round and poke your head through the letterbox for signs of smell?

He could have gone on holiday I suppose. I would call the police if it was an elderly person though.

CailinDana · 10/12/2011 08:40

Go and knock on the door before you ring the police. Open the letterbox. If there's a dead body in there, you'll smell it.

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 10/12/2011 08:41

Ring, on the non-emergency line. He may be away travelling or something, but i'd much rather know than have that playing on my mind over Christmas.

Cinders22 · 10/12/2011 08:42

I would call the Police. I am sure they will not think you a complete loon, well not much, if he turns up safe and well but it would be awful if you did not say anything and it turns out he has died/is missing.

Foxy800 · 10/12/2011 08:42

WOuld he normally move his car regularly? Is it possible he has gone to his home ocuntry for a while?

If you are worried though I would phone your local police station and explain the situation to them and ask their advice.

Tinselrella · 10/12/2011 08:42

I would definitely call them, I don't think they would think you were a loon - just someone who cares.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 10/12/2011 08:43

I'd give them a call.

Geordieminx · 10/12/2011 08:43

Ah now there is a flaw in the plan in that I don't know which actual house he lives in, we live in a cul-de-sac, there is a wee pedestrian street off ours with about 8 houses. I could probably find out though.

He's not old, late 20's early 30's I think?

OP posts:
Geordieminx · 10/12/2011 08:45

he used to move the car every day, he works in the same business park as I do I think, which is why I noticed that it hant moved since October... Possibly even longer.

Because he was so precious about his car it seems weird that he would go away and just leave it?

OP posts:
lottiegb · 10/12/2011 08:46

Knock on the door and ask if someone left a parcel for you (you can say 'sorry, their writing was terrible must have misread the number'). He's probably on holiday or a business trip or stays with his girlfriend a lot.

Foxy800 · 10/12/2011 08:48

It will put your mind at rest though if you call the non emergency number and ask their advice.

QOD · 10/12/2011 08:50

I'd call the non emergency line, we had to once when we went out looking for our cat and he was in someones car just looking at us Xmas Shock and they were lovely. No they didn't race out but they did run the plate and knock on the door and leave a note. Puss cat got out at 6.30am (and didn't pee or poo thankfully!)

aldiwhore · 10/12/2011 08:51

If you don't know the house then yes I'd phone the local police station and explain the situation. But I'd also start knocking on doors too.

He could be fine you know? He could have been poorly or away, or could have lost his driving licence.

Good on you for being a good neighbour though... now, wrap up and start knocking!

goinggetstough · 10/12/2011 08:58

Even if you haven't got his address the Police would able to get it from the DVLC.

bejeezus · 10/12/2011 09:04

I would knock on some doors first-aid his immediate neighbours might know that he is away or something?

I like it when people are concerned about neighbours like this. Warms my cockles.

Is it relevant that he is Asian? Is that a description in case 1 of us has seen him?

RecursiveMoon · 10/12/2011 09:08

Arf at Bejeezus, I wondered that too.

Tuppence2 · 10/12/2011 09:09

You could give the police the car registration plate, as his car is pretty likely to be registered to him, at his home address.

ExquisiteChristmasCake · 10/12/2011 09:11

It's interesting you felt the need to describe his nationality/race. Not sure what you're trying to imply.

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 10/12/2011 09:15

I think the OP only put his race bacause its something she did know about him, and she knows very little else.

She very clearly cares bout this young lad, shes not trying to imply anything, although you clearly are. Grin

HeidiKat · 10/12/2011 09:16

I think the fact that he is asian is relevant in the sense that, as other posters have mentioned, it is possible he might have gone travelling to his family's home country for a couple of months? I agree that you should phone or pop in to your local police station with the car's registration and let them look into it, hopefully the travelling thing is the case and he is fine.

Geordieminx · 10/12/2011 09:17

I'm not quite sure why I mentioned his race either. Or the car reg, or type, or the layout of our street. Confused.

Without wanting to make any generalizations quite a few of the asian guys that I have known of this age have made extended trips home, so thought that might be a possible explanation? That's all?

exquisite, move on, there is no racism here.
