To call the police?

Ok so a random one.

There is a young asian guy that lives up the road from us (street at right angles to ours so not really 'neighbours')

I have only seen him once or twice, and this is only because is he is quite precious(?) with his car, and if he cant park it in his "space" outside of his house then he would park outside of ours, so he could see if from his window. It's only an 04 Kia type thing, but anyways.

All of the above isnt really relevant, so...

The car hasn't moved since the beginning of October, possibly longer. Not an inch. Havent seen the guy either. And of course the more I think about it the more I think it's all a bit weird? I know he lives alone, and now have visions of him dead in there being eaten by his cat or something, although to be fair I don't even think he has a cat.

So, do I ring the police, and tell them there is a car in our street belonging to a neighbour that hasn't moved for over 2 months, and risk sounding like a complete loon-- or do I mind my own business?

My mum and dad have been here for over 50 years and still call the country where they were born 'home'.

pepper09 · 10/12/2011 10:50

exquisite that has annoyed me. Get a grip and stop trying to be so PC!

perceptionreality · 10/12/2011 10:52

How old is he? Is it possible he's a student and has gone travelling as part of his course or something? A lot of young people I know tend to go away for about 6 months at a time. But I have no idea if someone who did that would leave their car out for ages.

I don't think you have anything to lose in contacting the police and nice that you are concerned.

YuleingFanjo · 10/12/2011 10:56

Have you called the police yet?

Selks · 10/12/2011 10:59

Mabel - 'gone home for undesirable classes' - what are you on about? Are you suggesting that because there is a vague possibility that the chap might be out of the UK he might have gone to train to be a terrorist or something? What on earth?? Hmm Biscuit

Tinselrella · 10/12/2011 11:03

Oh my, extremes from both ends here - exquisite seeing racism where none exists. And then someone else suggesting something extremely offensive and racist. The OP fears that the poor man has died and been eaten by his cat, not that he is plotting to put an end to Western civilisation as we know it Mabel Hmm

redpanda13 · 10/12/2011 11:03

No not once did I think about 'undesirable classes'! In fact it took me a good 10 minutes to work out what that means! I thought it was a typo and you meant causes not classes and I was still bewildered. So every British Pakistani who visits Pakistan must be involved in terrorism? Crazy!
OP - I think it is very neigbourly of you. I would check with the closest neighbours to him first as they may have been asked to check his property. I would if I was going away at this time of year as pipes may burst in the cold. If not then I would phone the non emergency line. Good on you for being so thoughtful Xmas Smile

MabelLucyAttwell · 10/12/2011 11:08

RedPanda

I am not suggesting that all Pakistanis are involved in terrirism. All unattended luggage /bags are removed at Heathrow 'just in case' but how many dangerous ones have been identified? What's the difference between the two in being careful.

noir · 10/12/2011 11:18

Mable I don't think anyone was being timid, I genuinely think nobody had considered such an absurd reason for him to be out of the country. What a vile thing to say.

MabelLucyAttwell · 10/12/2011 11:23

I still think the Police should be informed.

bejeezus · 10/12/2011 11:23

A person is entitled to refer to which ever country they wish to, as there home

It is not ok to assume where someone else's home country is, based on the colour of their skin

These assumptions days in, day out are more damaging than out and out racism

No single one of you individually, or collectively actually, gets to decide what is and isn't offensive or who can be offended and when

That so many people don't get this, is a huge problem. And is exactly the reason we have to have 'PC gone mad'

TheFallenMadonna · 10/12/2011 11:25

Blimey. Ask around, and if no joy, phone the non emergency number and just state your concern. Preferably not suggesting that he might be training as a suicide bomber (WTF?)...

stinkingbishop · 10/12/2011 11:26

Oh for goodness sake people! Has Mumsnet got its period?

Now, OP, the inner Nancy Drew in me is desperate for you to investigate this. Do report back.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 10/12/2011 11:28

mabel you are a numpty

SanTEEClaus · 10/12/2011 11:28

Mabel I have not a single idea as to what you are referring to. Timid? No. Just clueless as to your meaning.

Tinselrella · 10/12/2011 11:28

(it is a full moon)

bagelmonkey · 10/12/2011 11:36

Its odd that someone who takes great care over their car would leave it out on the street for several weeks. The battery could run flat etc.

crazycrackernanna · 10/12/2011 11:38

Maybe he's had a death in the family and is at relatives?
Could be anything simple.

xPAULAx · 10/12/2011 11:41

mablel intelligence fail...

hackmum · 10/12/2011 12:14

The OP mentioned that the man works in the same business park as her. In which case, surely his employer would have noticed if he'd gone missing? I tend to think there's probably an innocent explanation.

WorraLiberty · 10/12/2011 12:20

I don't know if anyone has suggested this, but have you checked the tax disc OP?

If it happens to be out of date, that would be a stroke of luck as someone will no doubt deal with it immediately.

DodieSmith · 10/12/2011 12:24

Yes, if he's got a job then he's unlikely to die and his disappearance not be investigated.

CarolCervix · 10/12/2011 12:30

maybe he's been abducted by aliens. green ones. and is being probed as we speak.

CarolCervix · 10/12/2011 12:30

h shit. shouldn't have mentioned the colour of the aliens. sorry.
