To call the police?

Ok so a random one.

There is a young asian guy that lives up the road from us (street at right angles to ours so not really 'neighbours')

I have only seen him once or twice, and this is only because is he is quite precious(?) with his car, and if he cant park it in his "space" outside of his house then he would park outside of ours, so he could see if from his window. It's only an 04 Kia type thing, but anyways.

All of the above isnt really relevant, so...

The car hasn't moved since the beginning of October, possibly longer. Not an inch. Havent seen the guy either. And of course the more I think about it the more I think it's all a bit weird? I know he lives alone, and now have visions of him dead in there being eaten by his cat or something, although to be fair I don't even think he has a cat.

So, do I ring the police, and tell them there is a car in our street belonging to a neighbour that hasn't moved for over 2 months, and risk sounding like a complete loon-- or do I mind my own business?

London - she's quoting a post.

trixymalixy · 10/12/2011 19:40

"undesirable classes" WTAF!?!?

Rory, that's really sad Sad

Geordie, you sound like a very thoughtful neighbour. It wouldn't hurt to ring the non emergency line.

giveitago · 10/12/2011 19:58

"trips home"? There's the implication his home isn't "here". The race card comes into it in the sense that if he was white it wouldn't have been mentioned despite the fact his "home" could be Aus or France or SA

Oh bloody hell. Hilarious. I think the OP was helpful in putting his ethnicity. My first thought was that possibly he might be on an extended trip to asia. Not saying this isn't his home. Many of my relatives who are asian now spend UK winters in asia. I would too if I didn't work and had the money for the trip.

OP if you can get away from the fact that people are implying your racist you could continue with you concern and investigate and ensure this guy is OK.

ManateeEquineOhara · 10/12/2011 20:22

Mabel's post is vile narrow mindedness at its most extreme!

Do some investigations with your other neighbours OP. If that fails call the police.

Selks · 10/12/2011 21:51

Giveitago, I have heard the term "Trip home" used by my colleagues (them again) with Indian heritage and what they mean is a trip back to the ancestral/family home area. Not that they do not have their primary and often birth home in the UK. I don't think that anyone on here is suggesting that the UK is not home for someone of Asian heritage.

PiousPrat · 10/12/2011 21:58

I am intrigued by these undesirable classes. Is it a series of lectures in fart techniques? Maybe a few seminars on dodging emptying the bins and of course duvet hogging 101.

letmehelp · 10/12/2011 22:06

LOL, I was offended because OP said it was "only" which is a darn sight better than any car I've ever owned Wink

I was at a do last night attended by 30 different nationalities from all continents. A little Japanese girl, on accepting her present from the Asian FC said she didn't think it was the real one because he had the wrong colour. The Nigerian lady next to her told her she was probably right! Maybe you had to be there, but it was a heart warming moment, when no one was embarrassed or offended. But then no-one was looking to be.

OP what did you do? Have you found out if he's OK?

letmehelp · 10/12/2011 22:06

"only" an 04 Kia Blush

GossipWitch · 10/12/2011 22:11

So has this guy gone on hols or has no-one found out yet?

Geordieminx · 10/12/2011 22:28

I'm back!!!

The car is taxed, no bawldy tyres Wink the "only" was more in ref to the fact he would move it so it was in front of our house so he could see it from his bedroom window.

I have asked the few of the neighbours but no one knows anything Sad

CupOfGoodCheer · 11/12/2011 12:57

Can you tell if there are letters piling up on the doormat? I don't suppose he gets a milk or newspaper delivery?

Have you knocked on his door yet? I would knock and say you've lost your cat or something and has he seen it?

I think you're right to be concerned.

DressDownFriday · 11/12/2011 13:52

I wouldn't bother ringing the police.

If the car is parked legally / taxed / secure and not causing any obstruction then nothing they can do about that.

Your original text states that you have only seen him once or twice anyway. They will not make any further enquiries unless you usually saw this male every day and had genuine concerns for his health/safety.

If you need to put your mind at rest then knock on his door and if there is no reply then ask his neighbours. (Although what are you going to say without sounding a bit Xmas Confused)

SardineQueen · 11/12/2011 15:53

Dressdown I am sure that if someone rings the police and says they have not seen their neighbour for ages and their car hasn't been moved and they're a bit worried they will go round.

Surely?

Otherwise what are people like that there for?
They don't come out for much around here, but I would still expect them to go and knock on a door if someone had raised a concern that there might be a problem with the single occupant.

SardineQueen · 11/12/2011 15:54

I don't think she knows which house is his, cupofgoodcheer.

poppercondria · 11/12/2011 17:10

OP, have you rung the police non-emergency number yet?

LondonMumsie · 11/12/2011 17:15

Sorry muffinino82 !!!

Geordieminx · 11/12/2011 19:27

Trying to find out which house is his before I ring the police, otherwise it's probably unlikely they will do anything.

OP posts:
poppercondria · 11/12/2011 20:24

They'll be able to check against the number plate to find his address. I mean, if you can find out, great, but they'll be able to follow up without it. You're lovely to be doing this!

iscream · 12/12/2011 04:44

I don't think you really need worry about which house it is. They can run a check on the license, and find out that way.

MollyMurphy · 12/12/2011 05:17

maybe he's just traveling. I think it's swet of you to notice and be worried. Do ask around just in case and as others have said try the non emergency line.

MollyMurphy · 12/12/2011 05:17

Dang....sweet, I meant sweet

south345 · 12/12/2011 06:08

I would just give the car reg too, they'll be able to get the address from that.

Geordieminx · 12/12/2011 20:42

HE'S ALIVE!'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently neighbour saw him looking under bonnet of brandless car this afternoon. He gets the bus to work now.

He's not deed!
