I always wondered why British girls who go clubbing don't wear coats (answers anyone?).

it is defo a British thing, and something I've always wondered about.

the add was fairly amusing IMO.

SoupDragon · 12/12/2011 07:20

I think it speaks volumes that many people who didn't know what the ad was for assumed it was some kind of safety ad.

HollyGhost · 12/12/2011 07:25

The coats thing puzzles me and it is not just "girls". I was in the city centre at the weekend and watched a stream of mostly young men go by without even the lightest jacket, it was literally freezing.

I have no idea why anyone does this.

Trills · 12/12/2011 08:42

I know why people do it - because if you have a coat you have to carry it around or wait in queues for cloakrooms or put it somewhere and remember where you put it.

Beer jackets are much more portable.

LooksLikeReinDeer · 12/12/2011 09:31

Hmm not keen, agree the ad feels wrong.

Might have been a bit better if they'd used the same models for 'before' (bad outfits e.g. last Xmas) and 'after' (i.e. this Xmas they'll wear something gert posh).

Just generally a crap idea for an advert though really isn't it. Those that can afford to shop at harvey nicks will, and those that can't (ie. me) won't.

HollyGhost · 12/12/2011 09:41

They want to persuade those that can just about gather the funds that shopping in Harvey Nicks is worth it, because you'll escape judgement.

Agree Trills. And a beer jacket would be a cheaper, as well as more effective, solution.

Angelswings · 12/12/2011 09:44

It's sizest and for that reason I'm out

HN, you are fired

mulledfishandfrostedlilacs · 12/12/2011 09:55

I haven't read the whole thread but I also agree this is vile and irresponsible. Awful misogynist shite.

Every single one of the "shamed" women in the ad were either being glanced at or looking to avoid the gaze of a man in the background-strongly setting up the message that they are not worthy in eyes of man.

Grr I am so cross, using a hymn as theme music re-inforces messages of guilt inducing cleanse my soul connotations. And yes the first womans downtrodden body language and ripped tights suggests abuse at the very least-self abuse.

If you like this then you are not doing woman kind any favours. YABVU.

BarmyBiscuit · 12/12/2011 09:55

I like it. It's funny.

CarrieInAnotherTWOBabiTWINS · 12/12/2011 10:00

Found this ad v offensive, glad others do too

Trills · 12/12/2011 10:02

I don't find it offensive, I just find it crap.

TheBreadstick · 12/12/2011 10:12

I don't mind it to be fair, it's the kind of tack HN goes for quite a lot. I remember years ago when they open the store in Leeds there were billboards all over the city with the slogan: "HN Leeds, not follows." And a model wearing a collar and dog lead ... I find that WAY more offensive than some women coming home from a night out!

alistron1 · 12/12/2011 10:15

I think the advert is crass and lazy. I initially thought it was a christmas safety campaign, some of the women look like they have been victims of drink spiking/violence. I do take the phrase 'walk of shame' to refer to returning home in the morning after a cracking night out in your party clothes, but I didn't 'get' that from the advert. There was a nasty/sneery undertone to it that I didn't like.

ohanotherone · 12/12/2011 10:30

We don't wear coats so we don't have to wait/queue/pay for the coat place thingy and so we can move from pub to pub without worrying about forgetting coat or having to hold a heavy coat in a crowded pub/club when there is nowhere to put down the coat except on a sticky floor!

LDNmummy · 12/12/2011 10:33

That was awful and I know where I wont be spending any of my money this Christmas or any time soon.

smartyparts · 12/12/2011 10:38

In their defence - they have used a selection of thin and fat women, but it's a depressing idea and no, we haven't all been there, thank God!

I suspect that HN have made a mistake with it. I watched it, initially thinking it was a safety ad, and that is what many will associate with the brand.

On principle, I won't shop there now.

ChristinedePizanne · 12/12/2011 11:01

It's a horrible, horrible ad for all the reasons everyone else has said

daenerysstormborn · 12/12/2011 11:02

it's an awful ad for so many different reasons.

makes no difference to me really though, have never shopped at harvey nicks.

£700 on a frock!, is that normal?

spiderbabymum · 12/12/2011 11:07

HATE IT

spiderbabymum · 12/12/2011 11:08

Starve yourselves girls .
And book a morning hair appointment so Youll look good on the way home after a night out ....just in case the postie see YOU .

JESUS .......

spiderbabymum · 12/12/2011 11:09

Thats enough reason for me NoT to go there

frownieface · 12/12/2011 11:22

Horrible advert, the first girl looks as though she has been assaulted, the 'normal' girls were made to look like scummers, especially the one eating a kebab. I think a couple of them are still drunk. And why are there no men doing the walk of shame?

It's just not right, I think HN need to sack their advertisers...
