To put my tree up on 10 December

DD is being Christened on Sun 11th, and I think there will obv be a Christmas theme at the service (its part of the family service). Having about 30 people back here for buffet lunch party - will it be a real let down if there's no tree/no decs? Its hideously early, but am thinking of getting it up..... naff?

Mine is always up by the 10th. It's my birthday on the 11th and it has to look festive by my birthday!
I love Xmas. Have heard quite a few people saying they won't put their tree up as it's someone's birthday first. Can't understand why you wouldn't want all the lovely decs up FOR your birthday! I always do!

learningtofly · 28/11/2011 19:14

In years gone by my tree would be up in time for our local Christmas market and visitors (lincoln market which is a big deal here)

However due to decorating and other stuff the last 3 years its not been up til the 19th but if you buy a real tree then they are usually half price ;) last year we got a tree priced at 55 quid for 20. And it lasted til epiphany :)

Malificence · 28/11/2011 19:17

Our always goes up on the 10th, family tradition. Wink

Ours usually goes up on 1st December - or earlier if dd gets too impatient!

pointydog · 28/11/2011 19:29

yeah, put your tree up. Nice bit of decoration.

deliakate · 28/11/2011 20:25

Lol, waswondering! Yes, we will have the tree in our sitting room, which is kind of visible from the kitchen - where I anticipate most people will hang out!

YANBU
I have one tree up and two more going up on Wednesday

AKMD · 28/11/2011 20:37

YANBU, ours are going up on Wednesday or Thursday. DH bought a -hideous- artificial tree last year so it will last into the next century and beyond Hmm

I'm all grumpy because my birthday is mid-December and my parents would never have let Christmas overshadow their darling PFB's special day. DH on the other hand has other ideas

LizzieMint73 · 28/11/2011 20:44

Last year we didn't have a tree until I bought one in the argos sale on 27th december. I then went home and put it up and it stayed up until 5/6th Jan. My mum thought I was insane to put it up after christmas

NewsClippings · 28/11/2011 20:51

I'd be sick of it if I left it up that long! So prefer to leave it until a few days before Christmas.

cherub59 · 28/11/2011 20:51

Ours is going up on sundayWink

Besom · 28/11/2011 20:59

My mum thought it was naff to put stuff up too early in December, but I don't have the same feelings about it.

DD is very excited so we're going to do it this weekend.

femalevictormeldrew · 28/11/2011 21:53

I am in exactly the same position as you with our baby being christened on 11th and was wondering the same thing RE the tree. Can I just ask if you are doing Christmassy food for the buffet? I'd like to but don't want to do the whole turkey etc as it is a bit too much and Christmas day only a couple of weeks after

DrCoconut · 28/11/2011 22:01

In our family it always was up on the Sunday before Christmas day (so Christmas eve if necessary) and down after 12th night. I have upheld tradition as near as I can, though I concede defeat if Christmas day is a Sunday. I don't get why people have trees up before advent has even started and then rip them down before the Christmas season is over Confused Though as a disclaimer I should add that it is not my business when others put their decorations up/away and I don't go telling them off or anything just make secret cat bum face, no not really!

youarekidding · 28/11/2011 22:03

YANBU. I have told DS we will put our tree up then - first weekend in xmas! (he hasn't worked out yet it isn't!) but it feels right it should be done before they break up for xmas hols.

Tinkerisdead · 28/11/2011 22:10

Vivipru im near you! Never knew of that place. Seriously tempted to get a real tree now thank you!

corriefan · 28/11/2011 22:55

I too was brought up to do tree in Xmas eve and take it down on 12tn night. Much more fun to do earlier and feel xmassy so ours will be up on 10th too.

TunaTiebacks · 28/11/2011 22:59

Mine is going up on the 1st. YANBU, put it up whenever you like!

ViviPru · 29/11/2011 09:02

You're welcome, DoctorsWife, lovely part of the world I might go for a cheeky snifter (or 3) in the Grey Lady once we've chosen the tree :)

CrunchyFrog · 29/11/2011 09:18

We did ours yesterday. I the kids didn't want to wait any longer. Grin I let them decorate it. It looks like the tinsel fairy puked on it.

BendyBob · 29/11/2011 09:25

10th sounds ok.

I don't like it up for 12 days after Christmas though. After New Years day I've had enough of it. I'd rather the period of time it's up is longer before than after Christmas.

Tinkerisdead · 29/11/2011 18:05

Vivi my husband plays pool for 'the linford'. A friend of mine collects deer poo from the park at xmas to put on the drive (left by santas reindeer you understand). If you see a mad woman scooping the poop that'll be me stealing his ideas!

PeanutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 29/11/2011 18:31

Was never allowed it up until after my birthday on the 6th when i was younger...Now I cant wait to get it up and thursday is December Grin

TheCatInTheHairnet · 29/11/2011 18:37

Ours goes up the first weekend in December, unless the 1st falls at a weekend (that just seems a teeny bit too early for my liking!). I also put presents that arrive from other people in the mean time, under the tree. Come the day after boxing day though, I'm itching to get rid of it and it's always gone by NYD. It just looks a bit sad by then!
