To put my tree up on 10 December

DD is being Christened on Sun 11th, and I think there will obv be a Christmas theme at the service (its part of the family service). Having about 30 people back here for buffet lunch party - will it be a real let down if there's no tree/no decs? Its hideously early, but am thinking of getting it up..... naff?

Lambzig That's interesting. This is the first year (of my whole life) I'm having a real one, is it going to be a Alfie Moon-esque pile of twigs by the 31st if I get it this Saturday? The Christmas Tree place do them with a root ball if you like, would that be better? But would we need a big ole pot for it then?

tardisjumper · 28/11/2011 15:08

Mine is going up on 6th. We would normally do it later but we have an Xmas party on the 10th and I want a tree for it god damn it!

I will be gradually adding stuff throughout Dec though. The wreath and garlands and candles won't go up till later. It's normally the other way around though.

ihatecbeebies · 28/11/2011 15:27

Ours has always went up on the first of december

bridgeandbow · 28/11/2011 15:35

Vivi - you need to buy a Nordman Fir tree and a stand that allows you to keep it in water (which you will need to top up periodically). Ideally you should cut a bit off the base (or ideally get the place to do it) so you have a fresh cut in the water. Claims to be shedless (it isn't) but it won't shed much.

Call your local garden centres and ask if they have Nordsman (Dobbies et al will all have them). A bit more expensive than a bog standard fir but worth it imo.

HeidiKat · 28/11/2011 15:53

Mine will probably be going up that weekend too, right after DD's birthday as like picnicbasketcase I don't want her birthday to be overshadowed by Christmas. I can't really have a proper tree this year as DD is being a little monster and the more you tell her not to touch something, the more it attracts her, so I will be having a table top tree put up somewhere high, but I am vv excited about being able to decorate my shiny new fireplace (fireguard on it to keep little fingers out).

Xiaoxiong · 28/11/2011 16:00

YANBU at all. We bought a Nordman fir yesterday - couldn't find a saw to cut the bottom, but have a stand with water and untangled all the lights while listening to the Advent carol service on R3 and drinking hot chocolate. Only lights on at the moment - will add other things slowly throughout advent. I'm 40 weeks on Friday so we have got a relatively early start this year in anticipation of the LO's arrival!!

ViviPru · 28/11/2011 16:07

Bridge thank you for your sage words. The Christmas tree plantation up the road has Nordman Fir. I've also just noticed they sell water stands, so I will get one of those too...

Look at all the happy people getting their trees! Eeee!

Ipad2iloveyou · 28/11/2011 16:18

Put it up, you want the house to look nice, just go with it.

Dawndonna · 28/11/2011 16:20

Mine goes up the weekend after my birthday, 6th. So no, 10th not early at all.

HeadfirstForHalos · 28/11/2011 16:23

Ours doesn't normally go up until December, but we are making the most of the strike and putting it up Wednesday Grin

howcomes · 28/11/2011 16:24

Just put mine up today, usually we wait until 1st week of December but I just thought what the heck, ds is 19 months and he'll love the lights and decorations.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 28/11/2011 16:27

My mum's birthday is Dec 10 so I think it's fair game to put it up any time from then :)

halcyondays · 28/11/2011 16:29

We used to put our tree up around the 10th and we were usually pretty much the last ones round here to put it up. Last year We put it up around the 3rd and will probably do the same this year, dd1 wanted to putit up at the weekend but we are holding out until December. Lots of people already have theirs up.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 17:58

First of December here, and I was brought up in a "strictly no earlier than 12 days before" house too.
I'd have it up now if the living room didnt need a MAJOR clean first

Trills · 28/11/2011 18:00

Once it is December all bets are off and you can be as Christmassy as you like.

oldraver · 28/11/2011 18:01

Mine id going up on the 10th, when my Mum is here to help. She will be abroad for Christmas so I dont want her to miss the fun that id putting up the tree Grin

My B/F is being all Scrooge like and asked if I could leave the tree until after his birthday on the 9th

SulkySullenDame · 28/11/2011 18:04

We put mine up on dd1's birthday on 10 December every year Smile This year, she will have a sleepover and the girls will put the tree up!

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 28/11/2011 18:07

I will probably put mine up this weekend Smile

Lisatheonewhoeatsdrytoast · 28/11/2011 18:08

YANBU mines will be up on Saturday!!

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 28/11/2011 18:12

I'm another one aiming for this weekend.

I have gone retro-artificial-golden-tree (ie naff) because the last time I got a real tree we ended up infested with spiders. It was a like a scene out of a horror film - they were all over the ceiling and dropping down on their little silks all over the room. I had to sweep them up and put them outside whilst the children screamed festively in the background.

Happy days. Smile

Google607 · 28/11/2011 18:16

My parents always put it up twelve days before Christmas and took it down twelve days after.. and i have just followed that on, so don't think the 10th is too early at all.... My neighbour has the garden decorations up and giving off enough light to land some planes.. they have been up a week now... I just wonder how they pay the electricity bill!!!

mandyl · 28/11/2011 18:19

I always think it's much more exciting on Christmas eve...with a glass of sherry or two!

mumeeee · 28/11/2011 18:23

Our tree will go up sometime around the 10th December. So no YANBU.
