to be annoyed with Ds's friends parents?

DS1 age 8 has been to a friends party where he has watched a 12 rated film, we weren't told it was going to be a film party and the parents didn't ask if it was ok to show them the film. If we'd known in advance we would have declined the invitation. AIBU to have expected the parents to have made their party plans clear on the invitation?

I think you are being a bit precious, yes.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2011 19:04

Can you tell us what the film was?

talkingnonsense · 26/11/2011 19:04

12, or 12A?

Sirzy · 26/11/2011 19:05

I think they should have checked with parents beforehand. Just because they think its ok doesn't mean other parents do

Sirzy · 26/11/2011 19:05

Good point talkingnonsense!

AgentZigzag · 26/11/2011 19:06

They should definately have asked you, it's not for them to make that decision on your behalf.

We let nearly 11 YO DD1 watch some 12 rated, but not if we think it'll either scare her senseless or be overly graphic.

What film was it?

There's not much difference between a 12 and a PG, would you have been equally cross if it had been a PG film?

workshy · 26/11/2011 19:08

I let my dd watch some 12s but only if I vet them

her friend was round for a sleepover and they asked if they could watch one -I text her mum to find out if it was ok

it's not up to them to decide what your child should or shouldn't watch

YNBU

bethelbeth · 26/11/2011 19:09

I think it really depends on what the film was. If ghostbusters was out nowadays it would probably get a 12 cert and I watched it from the age of 5 Wink

They are a guideline. But ultimately it's your decision

DoMeDon · 26/11/2011 19:10

YANBU - certification is there for a reason. Ignoring it can result in emotional abuse. I would be apoplectic if someone crossed this line.

BullieMama · 26/11/2011 19:11

Personally, I think it depends on the film, Pirates of the Caribbean are 15 but my 8 yr old loves them and we watch them frequently.

I think it would have been polite of the parents to say what they were going do but if it is a 12 rated its not exactly Saw. I believe some the Harry Potters are 12.

This all depends on your own thresholds of tolereance and how you personally feel about these things - do you know what the film was?

What I am trying to say in a clunky way is that some 8 yr olds are more emotionally mature than others and what some children would be blase about would send others into meltdown.

usualsuspect · 26/11/2011 19:11

I think you need to chill a little tbh

barnowl · 26/11/2011 19:12

The film was Transformers 3 which is a 12 rather than 12A. I would have been Ok with a PG.

Bulliemama, I have been careful not to let my DS watch the 12 rated Harry Potters. He is a bit sensitive about films, he woun't watch 101 dalmations because Cruella De Ville is too scary.

We let DD1 watch 'Paul' which is a 15, it's the only 15 she's seen and because she's familiar with most swears we thought it'd be OK, and it was.

But I wouldn't be chuffed with anyone else deciding she'll be alright watching other 15s.

The age ratings are flexible guidelines, but it's the parents who usually know what shits their own child up enough to keep them up half the night.

AgentZigzag · 26/11/2011 19:17

YANBU for they probably should have mentioned it beforehand, however once i heard it was Transformers 3, i would not be so bothered, it mostly big machines! my DS likes transformers and he's only tiny!!

I think it depends on the film?!

MenopausalHaze · 26/11/2011 19:23

Unclench OP - you are being unbelievably precious!

lottielou39 · 26/11/2011 19:24

I let my 8 year old watch 12/12A, but I would never allow visiting children to watch a 12/12A if they were younger than 12 because their parents are precious/overprotective/fussy/want to wrap 'em in wool for rest of their childhood they're not my kids, so it's not my decision to make.

gothicangel · 26/11/2011 19:24

transformers is hardly friday the 13th is it?
