Don't even need to ask if I'm being unreasonable because I know I'm not.

These ridiculous tanklike constructions being driven around London is just damn selfish.

Do these people think that "rough terraine" is just round the corner from Fulham High Street or something.

Friend of mine had to have one to negotiate the track to the riding school on Wimbledon Common!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate the bastard things.
Looking forward to some ranting with a bit of froth thrown in as this polarises. Grin

gordyslovesheep · 24/11/2011 14:53

well you are - wtf has it to do with you what people drive - maybe they live in the country or like the extra hight or room

maybe they like Landrovers - meh - not sure why it's selfish

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 14:53

marking place as the owner of a ridiculous tanklike construction being driven round the town where i live.

calamityboo · 24/11/2011 14:54

YANBU, the closest these things get to off roading is in Waitrose car park, but beware the wrath of the self made wealthys, (see other threads!!) who have managed to make it out of the rough arsed north and are now strutting round the south in their oversized (and overpriced) landys.

ItWasABoojum · 24/11/2011 14:56

These guys do some great spoof parking tickets to stick under their windscreens. Very cathartic.

becstarsky · 24/11/2011 14:58

YANBU If they got into our school then they live less than a third of a mile away, and we're in central London. Every morning the chelsea tractors are all parked in the disabled bays at the front of the school - I know those kids and they don't have any disabilities. Whereas the kids travelling on the specially equipped bus are all in wheelchairs and the chelsea tractors are blocking it from getting in every flippin' morning and blocking the lift at the back of the bus. They are all either matt black or shiny black with smokey windows like they think they're in the Wire. I despise them.

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 15:00

if you have that much time and energy to direct then good for you. i'm sure there are worthier causes you could direct your time and energy to though.

i'm doing my bit for british manufacturing Grin

eco warrior or jealous?

ColdSancerre · 24/11/2011 15:01

It would be OK if they had the skill to actually drive the things, but they tend to have no idea of just how big they are and mistakenly think they're actually driving tractors and veer into the middle of the road to go round parked cars, they are invariably parked over the white line in car parks and they seem to be unable to turn the steering wheel enough to not cut a corner when making a turn.

Seriously, if you're a piss poor driver don't buy a tank so that you'll be OK next time you hit something, either brush up your driving skills or hand back your licence.

Kayano · 24/11/2011 15:01

My dad has a big car for the height alone. He is disabled and has issues with his legs. I don't see what the problem is with people driving what they want/ like/ is easier for them

kenobi · 24/11/2011 15:03

Live in the unsmart end of Fulham and the fecking things completely block the narrow roads. Hate, hate, hate them.

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 15:05

i used to drive a 2 seater sports car, having seen the damage inflicted on it at less than 30mph (write off) i'll stick to my tank to drive my kids about thanks.

scaryteacher · 24/11/2011 15:06

They are great for towing gliders, logs for winter, driving in snow and for styaing safe on Belgian roads where all the native drivers (especially those in Audis) drive like knobs. Off roading in the Ardennes is fun in one as well, and really necessary for glider retrieval from fields. PLUS, ours runs on LPG so is eco friendly!

fuzzynavel · 24/11/2011 15:07

I can understand maybe if you live out of London, fair enough but to own one and drive it around London is just ridiculous.

There are many reasons, but here are just a few.

They take up practically two parking spaces.

You need a space behind them the size of a bus to be able to park there.

I'm sick and tired of being caught in a bottleneck somewhere up the road because one is "stuck" in a narrowish two lane road that can quite comfortably accommodate two cars.

OP posts:
kenobi · 24/11/2011 15:08

I've always been baffled by that argument naturalbaby. There is a happy medium between "2 seater sports car" and "tank which affects all other road users"
Volvos and audis for example have just as high safety ratings and aren't 10 foot wide.

fuzzynavel · 24/11/2011 15:08

Tanks are not necessary to drive kids about in. Volvo does a lovely range of "safe" cars as does Audi and dare I say so does BMW

OP posts:
fuzzynavel · 24/11/2011 15:08

Two great minds there Kenobi

I'm neither eco nor jealous. I'm a considerate London road user.

kenobi · 24/11/2011 15:09

Scaryteacher, you go right ahead and own a tank. Your reasons make total sense to me.

(not that you need my permission of course).

kenobi · 24/11/2011 15:11

fuzzynavel indeed Grin I have a feeling we live quite close to each other and suffer the effects of these cars regularly..

Do you know for example the Normand Road run which works perfectly until some fecker in a chelsea tractor turns up?!

Gigondas · 24/11/2011 15:12

Kenobi that might be true re volvo and Audi (indeed Vw Nissan and ford also do larger cars with good safety records) but next door have an xc90 - it is not small and one of neighbours struggles with it (as a shit driver myself I have every sympathy but I have a ford fiesta for that reason)

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 15:14

if i didn't have 3 kids and a double buggy in the boot then i would have a happy medium.

if you're not jealous or an eco then you're just having a moan about bad drivers who you happen to notice more because you have ishoos with tanks. there are plenty of other bad drivers who can't park in volvos and audis.

i personally have ishoos with drivers who are 5ft and a few inches who can't see over the steering wheel - you can hardly see them behind the steering wheel.

Gigondas · 24/11/2011 15:14

Scary teacher that is a sensible reason to have one. Not for doing 10 min trips to school, ballet etc on a London road . And if it is a bad winter , winter tyres will help if you domt have 4 wheel drive.

HoudiniHissy · 24/11/2011 15:16

"They take up practically two parking spaces."

Erm WTF? No, they don't. Parking spaces are designed to hold all cars. How much space is taken up by metal varies, but the footprint is the same if a 4x4 or a smart is parked in it.

Some people like the elevated position, and the style of vehicle varies between manufacturer. Volvo, Audi and BMW ALL do 4x4 vehicles.

Until the UK becomes like communist Russia, I believe we can opt to drive the cars we can afford to run and choose to buy.

fuzzynavel · 24/11/2011 15:18

Know it well kenobi.

I'm round the corner from the new St Thomas' private school. Oh and Hurlingham Road is one I have to use on a regular basis. Grrrrr

Wouldn't bloody mind well I still would if they realised that they were driving a tank and read the road properly when it clearly means, no, you can't just go whizz along thinking everyone needs to get out of your way due to size of tank. Think and pull the F in.

OP posts:
fuzzynavel · 24/11/2011 15:19

whizzing, best correct before the pendants try an attack!
