Don't even need to ask if I'm being unreasonable because I know I'm not.

These ridiculous tanklike constructions being driven around London is just damn selfish.

Do these people think that "rough terraine" is just round the corner from Fulham High Street or something.

OP posts:
ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:27

ha ha, you think you will be overtaking anywhere in a city? Or indeed that you lumbering tank is especially nippy, either? Oh, you will barge in and not indicate, but I won't let you in.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:27

How is it more selfish than a sports car say? Or owning two cars on the family? How is it selfish to buy a new car when the entire industry is in tatters and needs buyers?

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:28

Well you might need two cars if you both had jobs in different places, mightn't you?

You wouldn't need either of them to be stupidly big though!

NICEyNice · 24/11/2011 18:28

I get great pleasure from driving my bright yellow skoda at the speed limit to annoy all the local Landy drivers. I win (if only for being more uncool and more annoying)

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:28

I think you'll find that a RR Sport is neither lumbering nor a tank.

I hate the prejudice that is being displayed on here. Just because a poster drives a 4x4 we are automatically arrogant, selfish and inconsiderate. Ok then.

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 24/11/2011 18:30

coraltoes hahahahahahah Grin.

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:30

Oh, RR sports are the naffest, chavviest ones of the lot! And yes, they are big and lumbering.

And no, no-one who had any sort of social conscience would drive one of those if they lived in a city. There is no need for it at all. Except they're rather better at killing children if you crash into one, of course.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:30

Thank you squishy! Someone who knows her cars at least.
It isn't only used in the city....we city folk do sometimes go outta town!

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 18:31

No. You're not automatically arrogant, selfish and inconsiderate. You might live on a farm, be unusually large or have a member of the family with a disability. Or you might be just selfish.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:32

Ah yes child killing machines....

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 24/11/2011 18:33

Oh and in reference to the OP - they are excellent over the speedbumps (no more banging/scraping the chassis) and are much more comfortable over the potholes. So yes, they are very suited to the "rough terrain" of the London roads (certainly Souf of the River) Wink

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 18:33

blame the driver not the car. they should make everyone retake their test and assess the car they are driving, good idea up thread.

i know someone who has 3 kids in car seats across the back of a merc estate and the 4yr old is in a booster cushion which i don't agree with. we chose a land rover to keep our 3yr old in a high back booster as we had 3 under 3's and don't want to put him on a booster cushion, although the mothercare car seat 'advisor' condemed the arrangement so i'm still at a loss over what's best.

the nanny state can come and check all kids in car seats as well while they're at it. i saw a granny holding a baby on her lap driving round town last week and nearly leapt out the car to give her a piece of my mind.

my environmental impact at home (and dh's spreadsheets, budgets and comparisons) outweighs the gas guzzler on my drive.

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:33

If I see a mud splattered landrover, I don't assume its driver is an idiot. If I see a RR sport, or an X5, especially with dark windows and a personalised numberplate, in the city, I do.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:33

How do you all know whether these vehicles might be gas converted?! All of these arrogant, selfish twats (I think one person at least called us), might have a bigger social conscience than all of you petrol consuming posters together.

I doubt you've taken off your judgey specs long enough to look for the extra filling cap!

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:34

chocolate biscuit - you're actually meant to slow down on speed bumps. It's sort of the point.

NICEyNice · 24/11/2011 18:34

Tssskkk Landy drivers do I have to throw a good argument for you on this thread? You guys are a bit rubbish at this.

whispers - where are landys made and where are citroens made....

PeneloPeePitstop · 24/11/2011 18:38

They're still cheaper to run.

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 24/11/2011 18:38

Elaine but I am arrogant and selfish and drive a killing machine, so I am entitled to ignore the bumps? Isn't that the point all you anti-4X4 MNers are making?

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 18:38

So in summary, they are necessary in the city because of their unrivalled ability to handle:

-3 car seats
-bumps in the road
-improving the state of the car industry

Ok then! Completely convinced now Wink

PeneloPeePitstop · 24/11/2011 18:39

I am with you in theory though, look at bloody the bloody Prius (Pious).
Battery made in Canada, shipped to Japan, added to car then car shipped onwards...

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:42

If I can annoy someone like Elaine once a day I'll feel satisfied....
Only wish I had tinted my windows now and got a personalised plate!

Road humps still slow you down...they just don't scrape the bottom of the chassis like they used to on my 911. Phew.

PeneloPeePitstop · 24/11/2011 18:42

ooh except it depends what one you have

" Defender models are assembled under licence in several locations worldwide, including Spain (Santana Motors), Iran (Pazhan Morattab), Brazil (Karmann)and Turkey (Otokar)."

CurlyhairedAssassin · 24/11/2011 18:43

I don't think anyone on here is trying to assert that ALL 4x4 owners are arrogant, inconsiderate chavs. They were of course designed in the first place for farming types, caravan-lovers, very large families, rural types etc. Even people with disabilities who find it easier to get in and out of higher-up seats, that's fair enough. Good enough reason, IMO.

People on here (and it's the consensus of the general public, IMO, NOT MNetters per se) are objecting to the fact that there is a significant number of owners for whom they were not actually intended when they were first designed.

Yes, we're speaking about YOU, you chav! YOU, you insecure seeker-of-attention! YOU, you snob! YOU, you ostentatious, flash bastard! YOU, you leech on the environment! YOU, you selfish, I'm-alright-Jack, idiot!

Grin
ANTagony · 24/11/2011 18:44

I live in the country, have three kids on car seats and drive a Hyundai I10. I would love a Chelsea tractor, I visit lots of farms to see friends and drop the kids off, manage plenty of single lane tracks but the thing is the I10 copes just fine and its easy to find because just about everyone else I know does have a chelsea tractor (and a real tractor).

NICEyNice · 24/11/2011 18:44

Popbiscuit please can you add that to the list for 4 x 4s.

"A Landy is not as bad as a Prius."

Very valid point. Prius drivers are even bigger tits, for thinking they are being environmentally friendly and being smug about it, when they aren't.
