Don't even need to ask if I'm being unreasonable because I know I'm not.

These ridiculous tanklike constructions being driven around London is just damn selfish.

Do these people think that "rough terraine" is just round the corner from Fulham High Street or something.

gastonscave · 24/11/2011 17:56

I pay my vehicle excise duty anything else Wink

rogersmellyonthetelly · 24/11/2011 17:56

Have a disco which I love. I love that I can get in and out easily. I love that there are three proper seats in the back. I love that I can get the dog cage and the shopping in the boot at the same time. I love that I can stick the arena levelling device on the tow bar and just whizz it round the arena instead of having to do it by hand. Love that I have such a good view of the road, love everything about it really. I've had other 4x4 and nothing else comes close.
Oh, and I can park it in a normal space without even blinking. people who can't park an automatic car which has front and rear parking sensors and frequently also rear parking cameras don't need to drive a smaller car, they need to learn how to park. It's really not hard.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 24/11/2011 17:57

Bunbaker: Of course there's arrogance involved - round here in Liverpool they are more or less guaranteed to belong to either a chav or a wannabe WAG (is there much difference?), so you'll get arrogance in abundance.......

gastonscave · 24/11/2011 17:59

Funny as it's usually the people driving a mirca or fiesta that I find have trouble parking. If you can't park it don't drive it is my motto

kenobi · 24/11/2011 18:01

gastonscave yeah yeah yeah, I know it's pedantic.

But I'm making the point that saying that you pay it therefore you can do what you want on the roads is as irrelevant as saying "I pay income tax therefore I can wear a chicken on my head and no-one can complain if it shits on their shoulder"

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:02

Arrogance? Really?

I drive a Grand Cherokee and I love it. I love the space, the comfort, the elevated driving position, the safety, the ability to drive in deep snow and actually leave our town in winter, the space to fit a big dog and double buggy in the boot, that I can fit 3 toddler car seats across the back, that it's LPG converted and so isn't a huge ecological drain.
It fits my families lifestyle, is necessary in winter here as we'd never get anywhere and my folks are even more rural (I had to do grocery runs for them and their even more elderly neighbours last winter) and I'm happy in the knowledge that I drive it well.

However, does this mean that when I visit friends and family in Chelsea, Victoria or Pimlico that I shouldn't use it?!

I think the main issue here is the way these people are driving, not the vehicles they choose to drive. They could be just as arrogant and rude in a Ford Mondeo.

kenobi · 24/11/2011 18:04

Slightly mad metaphor and unneccessarily bolded up but I hope I'm getting my point across. Y'know, that just because you can do it doesn't mean you should or that other people won't find it antisocial.

Bunbaker · 24/11/2011 18:05
Grin
Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 18:11

"Because I want to" is not a good enough excuse to drive around a vehicle that doubles as a sitting-room when you are aware of the environmental implications. Very childish.

gastonscave · 24/11/2011 18:13

Couldn't give a chickens ass if you do find it anti social, I don't and no one else on here needs to justify ourselves to you

There's plenty of behaviour I find antisocial but I wouldn't tell someone I find it unpleasant so please refrain from it. It not me right to tell others what's right or wrong

Until it's made illegal I will continue to drive my Landy and will take even more pleasure in it knowing it's getting up your nose Wink

PeneloPeePitstop · 24/11/2011 18:13

Chocolatebiscuit the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso has three full seats and takes 3 car seats.

Cheaper to run too.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:13

But there are environmental implications to everything, but that doesn't stop people from choosing to have huge families, go on masses of overseas holidays, throw heaps of rubbish away every week, buy far more food than is necessary and chuck half of it away etc.

valiumredhead · 24/11/2011 18:14

My dad has a big car for the height alone. He is disabled and has issues with his legs. I don't see what the problem is with people driving what they want/ like/ is easier for them

Glad you pointed that out - that is one of the reasons I have one.

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 18:15

Um yes...but we shouldn't be doing any of those things either, Cinnamon. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I can kick puppies if I want to, but I don't because it's not a nice thing to do.

gastonscave · 24/11/2011 18:16

Popbiscuit I'm very childish my few pleasures in life am afraid

Also as I have previously said my sitting room on wheels is smaller than my Volvo both in length and width.

I shall now bow out of the ranting as I have revision to do. Good evening to you all

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:17

Me too Valium, I often have to take my Dad for various medical appointments all over the place and bless him he can't sit cramped up for long. This is why I offer - he has leg room, can just slide in and out easily, and the journey is more comfortable for him.

gastonscave · 24/11/2011 18:18

and you'd probably be arrested for kicking a puppy Wink

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/11/2011 18:20

I dunno, maybe the puppy deserved it. It might have been taking up too much room, or behaved in an arrogant way, or pee'd up her leg or some such!

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 24/11/2011 18:22

Penelope but its a Citroen Grin and there is no way in hell my husband would drive it (or me)!

I second what Gastonscave said! I will drive my Landy every day and take enormous pleasure in the knowledge that it upsets so many MNers.

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:23

YANBU, in a city they are ridiculous. And they do always seem to stick out of the ends of parking spaces, or too far into the road. You do have to be a special sort of wanker to drive an X5 or similar in a city.

I just never ever do them any favours - generally I'm the sort of driver who lets people pull out etc, but I never do it for a flash 4x4. Just my little way of giving something back Wink

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:24

I have a Range Rover sport. I don't give a fuck. I park in a single parking space, I pay for my petrol and therefore basically a fortune in duty that the govt relies on, I pay for my road tax, I pay for my parking permit.

Rev rev.

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 18:24

Well...I think there's really no more to say, is there? I think you've proven OPs point very nicely and succinctly. In a word: SELFISH.

Insomnia11 · 24/11/2011 18:25

A lot of people who drive the really oversized SUVs seem to be themselves rather large. Just an observation.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 18:25

I also don't need you to let me out... Happy to wait then overtake you later on.

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 18:26

Ach, it all works out in the end. You're much more likely to get keyed, or not let out onto the road, in one of those twatmobiles. Yup, you can drive one and it's your right and I'm sure you like it, but there's a price for everything!
