Okay so in the end you are all correct and in reality the number of threads deleted purely due to unreasonable troll hunting is very small (I was just unlucky :))
(and I'm being grouchy because my wanking piss poor excuse for breasts are not getting the expressing job done today and my DH just phoned up to tell me the milk I painstakingly expressed yesterday appears to have fucking well gone off)

I still think that the rules should be toughened up on attacks, I genuinely cant see the point of name calling.

well you are right there IS no point, as such, but if people re upset and hurt they don't always respond with a reasoned well thought out counterargument.

Entropygirl - I am not in Peachy's shoes, but I can well imagine that, after you have tried to explain for the umpteenth time why something is offensive/upsetting to people, only to see it rear its ugly head yet again, frustration might get the better of you, and you might tell someone to 'fuck off' rather than attempting, once more, to appeal to the better nature of some idiot.

So I am agreeing that there are not many valid threads being lost due to troll hunting. Some but not enough to get hot under the collar. As I hoped my second comment would indicate I still don't follow the reasoning that personal attacks are justified.

Everyone posting on here is human. None of us have all the answers or make 100% accurate judgements about how to respond to any given situation.

All we can do is assess a post and respond in the way we think is right. Often that will be by reasoned argument or challenging a misguided view. Sometimes it might be by reporting the post. And just sometimes, our gut instinct tells us that the most appropriate response is a good old-fashioned "piss off you div".

FWIW I have been deleted only once to my knowledge, and that was for calling someone a bigot, so hardly hate-crime of the century. I tend to be relatively polite, but sometimes a good solid "fuck off" is warranted.

In my defence I never enter a thread with oh fuck off and it is very rare indeed I post that; 800 posts into a thread where someone is trying to tell me autism is caused by neglect I might break but generally I don't. It's actually incredibly rare and I try ahrd to avoid being one of thsoe who answer OPs rudely and try instead to talk to OP to find out what is going on and be understanding. 99% of the time I hope I manage it.
