Three AIBU threads gone poof in an hour.

OP posts:
entropygirl · 21/11/2011 14:49

I have no problem with debate or challenging idiot view points but telling people to fuck off till the thread is deleted is neither.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 21/11/2011 14:51

Some viewpoints don't deserve reasoned debate, mainly because they are posted with the intention to cause upset. In those cases, I think a 'fuck off' is more than earned. This forum has been trolled by people making extremely nasty disablist rants. An 'off you fuck' is the least they deserve, tbh.

entropygirl · 21/11/2011 14:51

pag I dont agree. You can put your side of things and tell them how strongly you disagree and even that you find their POV offensive but you can't tell them to fuck off or try to bury their opinion.

Peachy · 21/11/2011 14:52

'it is unreasonable to look for people saying horrible things and then proclaim that they so painful to read you are justified in making personal attacks

I very rarely do deccend to thata ctually

And it hink this may be a values debate: IMO swearing is far less worrying than boigoted opinions. To me swearing is zilch, tbh. Not that I do it all the time- but it has no more power in real terms than any other words.

Indeed, i find Headmistressy Peachy gets more results.

But this is people's emotions, the things they love most dearly, their very fears. Of course at times people lose it a little.

MN ahs long had a policy of not caring much about swearing. I try to avoid personal attacks and the one or two times I have made them I have reported myself and walked away. There is someone on MN at the moment riling me: I wish there was a hide poster function so I could just skip it tbh.

If someone is happy to post nastiuness then they should ahve the balls to take it. Fuck off you twat (not aphrase I use but common) is in no way as nasty as your baby should be killed or anything of that ilk.

ShirleyKnot · 21/11/2011 14:52

If someone is typing shite into their keyboard then they can be pretty sure they'll get some flung back at them I'm afraid.

I'm not that interested/bothered about educating people who hold abhorrent views actually, I'd just rather they fucked off.

Pagwatch · 21/11/2011 14:53

You arecdetermi Ed to make this about people 'choosing' to be offended and using that as justification for personal attacks.
Which is a huge extrapolation from what people are saying.

I should not have to hide anything for fear of someone posting 'oh yes, it's called fucktard begone hahaha'.
If they post that I will usually post 'good lord -really?'
If they persist I may be rude.

I am not sure that is an awful scenario.
I certainly find it difficult to accept that I should avoid people saying vile things because to retort with 'oh do fuck off' is beyond the pale.

Do you have no sense that perhaps people could post with some empathy in the first place?

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 14:53

then it's best not to start posting like one on one thread but not on another.

AAARGHHH! Am I the only one here who has read quite a few of Mummystar's posts and can't see any disparity between them?

Peachy · 21/11/2011 14:55

'If someone posts ' I am pregnant and have found out this and think I will terminate' I would never in a million years post.
But if someone posts 'a test can now spot autism in utero and mothers should be encouraged to abort' I can post as I chose in response to that. Including finding someone to be an offensive arsehole and telling them so.
quite.

I also think Entropy you need to look at what MN is rather than how you would like it to be.

Mn allows swearing, it encourages self moderation and the whole approach of people piling on a nasty OP to round it off swidtly

Other sites exist that do not.

Surely we should choose the palce that suits us rather than getting upset about the culture we walk into? Excepting where we find ourselves in a bigoted or cruel environment obviously.

Now to fetch ds4 from nursery anyway. bye.

Pagwatch · 21/11/2011 14:55

I don't know who Ed is but maybe he has gin.

ShirleyKnot · 21/11/2011 14:56

There's something funny on this thread that's causing all the typos. I said LabGuage instead of language earlier on.

Labguage?>

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 14:57

The sooner we have thought-to-text interface the better. Do away with all this qwerty nonsense. DP reckons its not far off....

Pagwatch · 21/11/2011 14:59

Everytime I try to post 'here' and mistype I get gereldinetheluckygoat.

Autocorrect is sooo bad

ShirleyKnot · 21/11/2011 15:01

heh. I sent my son a text a few months ago saying "I love you clit"

I LOVE YOU CLIT! FFS.

ShirleyKnot · 21/11/2011 15:02

TO MY SON.

WHO IS 14.

CLIT!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 21/11/2011 15:03

Has he made eye contact since, Shirl?

Pagwatch · 21/11/2011 15:03

entropygirl · 21/11/2011 15:03

I met ED and stole the gin.

So I agree that it would be nice if people had empathy when posting but it would also be nice if they had it in replying. And by treating everyone who has a momentary empathy glitch as a raving troll I think we are letting ourselves down .

A stupid OP may or may not be on the level, a post saying fuck off and die is utterly useless.

I have genuinely read things on here and wondered why someone is getting toasted and its been 30/40 posts before anyone says anything coherent. I have learnt from the sensible rebuttals and changed my attitude. So I would be very glad if ridiculous OPs are left up with nice reasoned debunks for all to see. Certainly more productive than being deleted.

Peachy · 21/11/2011 15:05

Usually MN do exactly that: leave it up for education purposes, even if it's had a lot of deletion requests in fact.

For a thread to be deleted it must have got bad.

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 15:06

SK Grin

ShirleyKnot · 21/11/2011 15:06

Oh he's a long haired mumbler at the moment so I don't get much eye contact anyway - unless he wants some cash that is. The CLIT!

Whatmeworry · 21/11/2011 15:07

I do think there are people on MN who specialise in Being Offended. I do not think Pag is one of them (the opposite, in fact).

entropygirl · 21/11/2011 15:09

presumably you can report OPs? So if someone posts intrinsically offensive stuff it can be got rid of immediately?

Pagwatch · 21/11/2011 15:12

Arecdetermini Ed sounds like a comedy character from 'a funny thing happened on the way to the forum'

I am a founder member of PARD so I agree with you.
But I continue to disagree that anyone can post any insulting offensive shit and we must be obliged to respond with manner. Polite discourse is a two way thing. The rude response is not worse than the original offensive posting.

And foul comments around race and disability are always going to receive strong responses.
I always try to be polite. I mostly am. But focussing only upon the way an upset or offended person responds and glossing over racist or anti disability poster who provoked the response is burdening the wrong person.
And telling people 'not to read it if it upsets you', is patronising albeit unintentionally

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 15:12

It wasn't that bad though, Peachy. The OP wasn't a troll, she was a poorly informed regular poster with a questionable command of written English and even more questionable views who failed to articulate the crux of her point in a coherent way.

Lots of people did jump in with Fuck Off OP, and understandably so due to the way she so carelessly conveyed her view, inadvertently making all kinds of offensive statements. I don't think anyone shouted troll, but there were accusations that she was overplaying her lack of command of English to excuse the comments which caused so much offence. I agree with entropy that it would have been better to leave the thread up complete with debunks etc.

Tigresswoods · 21/11/2011 15:14

Err, am I the online who has noticed the wedding thread OP has contributed to this discussion? STBMTAP. Or have I just been on MN too much lately?!?
