Are they being unreasonable? Banned from local KFC today

Popped into my local KFC today. Due to the area I live in, they have screens up between customer and cashier (like in post offices and banks), which makes it hard to hear what is being said. I didn't understand what the girl asked me, and, as I often say when I don't understand what someone has said, I jokingly said "Can I have that in English please", without thinking/realising/noticing the cashier was from another country (english being her second language).

The cashier got very upset. More upset than I would have thought is necessary, and refused to continue to serve me. I was shocked. She got her manager and told her what I had said. To cut a very long story short, I have been banned from the store.

YABU - Not a funny joke at all!

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 17/11/2011 21:01

That's freaking hilarious!! How British!!

Did you have to have a Mcdonalds then?

tooearlymustdache · 17/11/2011 21:02

i think the longer version of the story is needed here

but i'll kick off by saying you've had a lucky escape, KFC is terrible food.

HugosGoatee · 17/11/2011 21:03

Yikes! It is an offensive phrase IMO but banned from KFC for it?! Surely she's heard the phrase before and could just think unpleasant things about you?

TheMonster · 17/11/2011 21:03

I can see how what you said could be taken as offensive.

AnyoneforTurps · 17/11/2011 21:03

I can't believe we're getting the whole story here.

Bohica · 17/11/2011 21:03

What did you get to eat instead then?

You won't say that again in a hurry

cookielove · 17/11/2011 21:03

Oh yes that was very rude of you, and i can understand why she got so upset, even if was a joke to you, imagine what she felt.

Not only were you so wrapped in yourself that you failed to 'notice' the cashier, you insulted her thinking nothing of it.

I think you deserve to banned, so no they are not being unreasonable Angry

AngelofTheLordiscomingDown · 17/11/2011 21:04

These security screens do cause a problem for me in banks and post offices. It is difficult to hear what the person on the other side of the counter says. If KFC cannot employ someone who speaks English clearly and continues with this sort of customer relations, they will just lose business.

You are NBU.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/11/2011 21:04

Their chips are crap, you're betteroff having a mcdonalds anyway.

Maybe you did say it in innocence, only you know. But it could definitely be construed as a racist remark and the employee shouldn't have to put p with that. So no I don't think they were unreasonable.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2011 21:04

It is bloody offensive. You were rude.

southeastastra · 17/11/2011 21:05

blimey where on earth do you live??

Psammead · 17/11/2011 21:05

Wowser - where the heck do you live that KFC have bullet proof screens?

Bloody hell.

Did you apologise?

VivaLeBeaver · 17/11/2011 21:05

If you couldn't understand because of the screen why didn't you say you couldn't hear her?

tethersend · 17/11/2011 21:06

They don't get someone insulting them, you don't have to eat KFC; everybody wins.

AitchTwoOh · 17/11/2011 21:07

oops. thing is, one uses that phrase when a person speaks gobbledigook on purpose, rather than when we simply don't hear them properly... so it doesn't actually make sense that you said it.

southeastastra · 17/11/2011 21:09

do you collect your food from a little opening like in the post office Grin

gordyslovesheep · 17/11/2011 21:10

this 'one' doesn't use that phrase - I tend to say 'I am sorry I can't understand you because of the screen - could you speak up, thank you' and smile - or something equally in offensive

YABU how do you know she doesn;t get that kind of shite 24/7

NinkyNonker · 17/11/2011 21:11

Hmmmmm, zinger tower burger...

AitchTwoOh · 17/11/2011 21:11

Hmm what's with the 'one', gordy?

Psammead · 17/11/2011 21:12

Yeah, south, and armoured vans with men dressed in blue jumpsuits and great big helmets to deliver the BBQ sauce Grin

ilovesooty · 17/11/2011 21:12

Just because someone's on minimum wage in a customer service situation shouldn't mean they have to be a target for smart alec remarks. You chose to be rude. They chose to refuse to serve you again. Seems fair enough to me.

yellowraincoat · 17/11/2011 21:15

Whether or not you said it in jest or not, it's a stupid thing to say. I hate it when people pipe up with stuff they think is hilarious, when they could just say (in your case) "Sorry, could you repeat that?"

No wonder the woman was pissed off, she could get shite like that all the time.

YABU
