AND they watched Cbeebies yesterday. I want to speak to the nursery manager about it but want to check I'm not being too pfb about it...

"If you wanted your DC cared for using the 'easy option' you'd have gone for the 'cheap option' childcare, nursery is rarely that." I can't work out if this is a dig at childminders or not?

"My £60 buys me the kind of directed learning I can only dream of being able to deliver myself."
It's interesting as I get from this thread that nursery is seen as the childcare which is higher quality in educational terms, and that there is an expectation that the higher fees pay for better quality provision, educationally speaking, than a childminder (nothing to do with paying overheads then...!) If the OP had posted about a CM using a DVD I guess the responses would not have been the same - probably more YABU's - and that seems to imply that it is the fact that you are paying more that makes it unacceptable, rather than the watching tv itself? It all seems a bit odd.

LeQueen no you are not the only one Grin

i got that impression aswell.

watching tv whilst eating is either ok or it isn't, regardless of whether the child is in paid for childcare or not.

My DS2 is in reception, and they have watched bits of Toy Story at school. When he was in pre-school they watched The Snowman. But it's because they do a 'creative curriculem' at his school, and those films were the 'topic' for those terms!

SunRaysthruClouds · 17/11/2011 21:23

Well when your daughter is 16 and you are wondering if she is on the pill without telling you or you find a half smoked joint on the patio I guess you will be able to look back and see that point in time where it all went wrong...

KatieMiddIeton · 17/11/2011 21:29

PumpkinBones you quote me and then make a reference to people asserting nurseries are better than childminders.

I didn't make any reference to childminders and you haven't represented my actual views.

If I'm paying for childcare I expect it to be of good quality. Watching a DVD during a meal is not good quality childcare in my opinion and I would not pay £60 a day for it, regardless of who the provider was.

SparkleSoiree · 17/11/2011 21:31

SunRaysthruClouds completely understand!

Actually.. Toy story is PG rated. My 3 yr old has watched it but does find some bits scary and doesn't really like it that much as a result.

I'm all for my kids watching a bit of tv, but I'd be a bit annoyed if they were watching it every day at nursery. I don't think their nursery even has a TV in fact. I wouldn't worry about 'learning opportunities' though.

So in summary, yanbu, but I'm not sure if say anything, as it's not really doing any harm, just not doing any good either. If it continues to be a daily occurrence I would probably question it with the manager.

Oops it must have taken me rather a lot longer than I thought to type that reply

Toy storey scared me!

skybluepearl · 17/11/2011 23:39

Nursery meal times should be chatty and interactive. What are you paying them for? To give care and quality attention. I think watching toy story is a cop out and an easy life for the staff.

skybluepearl · 17/11/2011 23:41

Also wouldn't show a PG without parental imput. My eldest couldn't watch them till he was 6.

threefeethighandrising · 17/11/2011 23:56

YANBU. I would not send my DS to a nursery which used TV or DVDs to control the children. Also if nursery staff are showing PG DVDs they're pretty crap at their job IMO, and / or the management are pretty useless, is shows such a lack of awareness. And how long is Toy Story - did they watch all of it?

The nursery DS goes to is lovely. The set up is based around free play and is Ofsted outstanding. The idea of them using TV is laughable.

If they were to show my young child a PG without my permission I'd be fuming.

If I were you I'd be looking for a new nursery, or perhaps a CM - there are some outstanding CMs out there.

YANBU

never heard of a pre school showing a whole dvd during lunch

can't believe that a group of 3 year olds sat through it all

i think you need to get clarity - was it on in a corner in the room and the children had other choices?

ime dvd's have been a big treat at the end of a busy week or busy day

having a tv on during lunch break is very unprofessional

PoppaRob · 18/11/2011 03:50

My 2 1/2 year old GD loves all three Toy Story movies. With 1 and 3 she's usually playing with her Duplo or other toys and makes occasional references to the movies, but when TS2 is on she's transfixed! I've made a note to get her Mum to check for contraceptives and roaches in 13 1/2 years time, especially now we know that this is the precise period in time when her life is heading down the slippery slope to becoming a drug addled trollop.
