So when it comes to everything from movies, through news readers, to childrens presenters you get representation for men, women, young, old (well older men anyway) you even get the occasional ethnic minority/person with disability. What you never ever get is anyone who is, shall we say, less than averagely attractive.

But us less than averagely attractive uglies (by definition) make up half the population but have absolutely no role models whatsoever. I am ugly and the chances are that my DD will be too (genetics being what it is) and I would love for her to grow up in a world that wasn't adamant that in order to be successful, rich, happy or even smart the one necessary criteria is to be good looking.

AIBU?

entropy did they play this game with others too?
Teenagers can be awful, far more hung up on looks than most.

You won't convince me, regardless of how many examples you give me of people referring to you as such.

It's just not how I view people.

So you think you're not kind or nice and that you are also ugly? Do I have that right?

squeakytoy · 14/11/2011 17:53

Like most women, I can go from looking like a bag of shite, to looking bloody good, just by doing my hair, and putting on some make up. I dont do it for anyone elses benefit.. I do it because it makes me feel more cheerful and confident.

I very very much doubt you are ugly Entropy. I think you just have a lack of self confidence because the people in your life who should be supportive have been damn insulting and unkind.

There is not a single woman I know who is ugly, and I bet you are no exception.

squeakytoy · 14/11/2011 17:54

Kerry I would disagree... what one person deems to be ugly is often what another person finds incredibly attractive.

entropygirl · 14/11/2011 17:55

Yes i think contrary to what the media would have you believe, men care less about looks than women. Certainly my DH couldnt really give two figs about my looks (recent comments aside) and actually claims to have singled me out from afar for being 'bouncy' I think he meant vivacious rather than under-bra-ed.

So maybe the best thing I can do for DD is to keep up the bounce.

kerry lol!

I do have Hair. It causes consternation at the hairdresses...it is Ginger and Wilful. So it can work either way....but certainly means people remember me!

Kerry, there is no example of absolute ugliness. I disagree with you if that's what you're trying to say.

It is so very true that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and whilst there some people that not everybody will consider beautiful/good-looking I bet there isn't anybody who everybody considers ugly either.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 14/11/2011 18:00

You have red hair?!

Try being dishwater blonde luv. Minging.

DamnBamboo · 14/11/2011 18:03

I'm just about to dye my hair red Grin

I'm a natural blonde, very fair and I'm sick of it so in keeping in line with many of my cousins, aunts/uncles and one brother who all have gorgeous ginger locks, I'll be dying mine soon.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 14/11/2011 18:16

Entropygirl, I can totally relate!

I have always been the fat one, no matter what size everyone else was, i was always a size bigger, even when that wasnt that big, a 12 i think when i first really noticed it, i mayas well have been 40 as everyone else was smaller therefore i was the fat one. And as we all well know fat equals ugly, always without exception in the real world. When i watch tv its impossible not to notice, the way you do, that all the ugly people are still a better catch than me because they are slimmer to a degree. Or the ones that are fat have at least a beautiful face or super styled clothes.

And then you come to the whole personality thing. My god i am funny, so fucking funny. Of course I am, Im fat, its the rules that I will be jolly :) Im not nice though, im fat and ugly and bitter as hell about it, that doesnt make nice Grin

And then as you get the 'make up from the gods will sort you out love' I get the 'well lose weight then and all will be well' - Actually no it wont, I will always be the ugly sister, even if the fat went i would be left with the saggy tits the stretched baby belly the celulite and all the other lovely things fatties have. I am different to you in one respect though, I would swap my first born for an all expences paid trip to the plasic surgeon Grin

You're worried dd will be embarrassed when you get to the school gates. You're very well prepared imo. My ds hasn't wanted to be seen in pulic with me since he was about 12 and a half - unless I've got my purse on me.

quirrelquarrel · 14/11/2011 18:33

I've always wondered. Is Glenn Close ugly?

See, if a question like that can be asked, shows how solid and unsolid at the same time "ugly" is.

But I am curious all the same Grin

damnbamboo I have dark shadows under my eyes that i've always had (genetics) and was bullied as a child because of them. Thanks for letting me know I'm still unattractive Hmm

entropygirl · 14/11/2011 18:57

baby yup I am hearing you on that....am in a constant loop of no point wearing make up due to fatness....no point losing weight due to face....

To all and any people who would like to have ginger hair : you might very well like ginger coloured hair but you would not like ginger hair. For one thing it will NOT be dyed (even permanent black did nothing) it will not be permed or straightened, and it eats combs and hairdressers scissors. Also mine seems to have gone curly since pregnancy and I am now shedding like a mangy dog.

DamnBamboo · 14/11/2011 19:21

Nan where did I say you were unattractive?

I said some people can look unattractive for a variety of reasons and listed a few attributes which are generally perceived as not necessarily looking attractive; one example of this is dark shadows under the eyes (I have them myself hence my use of concealer) and no, they don't look great in combination with the other things I also listed.

You may have dark shadows, but fab skin, nice teeth and be a nice easy-going person Hmm in which case the shadows wouldn't really matter.

Clearly that comment can't possibly have been directed at you because 1) I didn't know you existed 2) don't know what you look like regardless and 3) you've picked just one part of my whole description which is a sensitive issue for you and honing in on it.

DamnBamboo · 14/11/2011 19:22

Quirrel I don't think Glenn Close is ugly

Donatella has a nice nose.
Her hair is terrible and she's overdone the fillers, but no, I don't think she's ugly.
She looks like she may have seen better days though.

squeakytoy · 14/11/2011 19:50

If she hadnt overdone the lips, she would look fine, but with them, she does look ridiculous and not attractive at all.

This is another perfect example of vanity coupled with a psychological disorder
