So when it comes to everything from movies, through news readers, to childrens presenters you get representation for men, women, young, old (well older men anyway) you even get the occasional ethnic minority/person with disability. What you never ever get is anyone who is, shall we say, less than averagely attractive.

But us less than averagely attractive uglies (by definition) make up half the population but have absolutely no role models whatsoever. I am ugly and the chances are that my DD will be too (genetics being what it is) and I would love for her to grow up in a world that wasn't adamant that in order to be successful, rich, happy or even smart the one necessary criteria is to be good looking.

I don't like calling people ugly; it just doesn't sit right with me. It's so much more than how you look and all you can see on the internet is a photo, nothing else is apparent.

To be honest, something about this thread just doesn't sit right with me...

I dont think anyone in the world is actually ugly. Ugly is more of a personality trait rather than their looks.

I would however put Tracey Emin in the category of not really looking attractive, but she seems to go out of her way to project that image.

Tracey Emin doesn't have a symmetrical face, which does make her unusual looking, it's true.

I agree about the world ugly. It really unnerves me.

I do maintain that when I think of ugliness I think of scowls and sneers and misery, not actual features, innit.

On Tracey Emin - if you see her interviewed her face is wonderful, just wonderful. Wry, and warm, and very slightly shy but also funny and endearing. She is gorgeous. Also has the most AMAZING figure. Ugly - nope, never.

That's exactly the point I was making! Many of teh people on the most popular soaps aren't conventionally beautiful, but people love them.

Ugly people can come across as beautiful people because of the way they are, and vice versa.

My close friends SIL is stunning. She is really really beautiful to look at. But as I got to know what a mega bitch she is, her features slowly became much less attractive, she appears harsh and not pretty at all. Even when I look at her features individually, I honestly can't say that any of them are desireable, yet on a first meeting, she still manages to have people commenting on how gorgeous she is. But she's a horrible person inside and it makes her look ugly.

In exactly the same way, ugle people come across as not being ugly at all when they have kind hearts. Mannerisms have a lot to do with it I think. And smiles.

Nope, I am struggling to see it with Tracey Emin, she always looks unkempt and in need of a good wash, as well as smirking in almost every photo, so to me, she isnt attractive.

I do think that everyone has different opinions of what is attractive though. Which is how it should be.

I know, I know, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Black (I think), but it's about seeing people based on their personalities. The character looks like their personality (rather than their physical embodiment) to the protagonist. Quite interesting.
