To consider we may have a ghost..?

DH obv think I am AIBU but we live in a cottage built in 1856 and the incidents so far:

Hearing footsteps on stairs thinking it's our DCs only to find them fast asleep. Happens a lot!

DCs special 'taggies' (comfort blanket) disappearing for days, only to reappear in really obvious places we have looked at before.

DD's electric toothbrush turning itself on at 3 am in the morning. Bzzzzzz.

A friend convinced she saw a Childs face peering through our bannisters. DCs def in bed at the time.

DD 5yrs old saying 'who is the little boy that came to stay last night?' No little boy was staying!

I dont know. Possibly some could be explained but the toothbrush and footsteps freaks me out! Even DH has heard them, checked kids who are fast asleep and stated 'that's weird'.

How random, was just talking to my OH about the ghost we have at work, the little boy I look after used to very obviously communicate with someone that wasn't there before he could speak and I always see something walk up the stairs up the corner of my eye.

My boss then told me that her Mother came to see them unannounced (while they were all out) and called her up quite irate because she quite clearly saw someone walk up the stairs through the letterbox and ignore her knocking.

Since then, the cupboard under the stairs is often open when the boy is asleep and I know I've shut it myself as he is obsessed with opening it (generally accompanied by random shadow on the stairs) and it is not the kind of cupboard that would open on its own as you literally have to jam it shut and prise it open.

Today, I quite clearly saw someone looking at us out of the downstairs window as we came walked past the drive and as Dad was home, I thought nothing of it. Until I came in and no-one was in the front room and Dad was 3 floors up so no way he could have got up there that quickly.

It has been 2 year though and it's never done anything bad and seems to keep itself to the bottom floor. Although were it goes when it goes upstairs I do not know as I've never seen it on any other floor in the house.

I believe in ghosts. And most things, honestly. Am quite gullible woo. :o

Rollon2012 · 09/11/2011 23:55

Whats the feeling of being 'watched'?

I think I may have experienced that.

Primafacie · 09/11/2011 23:56

CocoPops, as the song goes, if you open your mind too much, your brain will fall out.

Lots of things could exist, but if OP had asked AIBU to think there is a family of teeny mouse-sized hippos living in the cellar, the response would be YABU. Likewise ghosts.

GypsyMoth · 09/11/2011 23:56

What good would an olive oil cross be if it's a Muslim ghost though quint??

GypsyMoth · 09/11/2011 23:56

Or perhaps Jewish?

IronOrchid · 09/11/2011 23:56

'Tis bobbins - you do not have a ghost.

Now if your toothbrush were whizzing around at 120mph, that would be noteworthy. But it's not. Your 'phenomenon' are well within the realms of normalcy.

Don't let the easily persuaded convince you otherwise.

GypsyMoth · 09/11/2011 23:57

Twice I have felt watched too....I posted here once about one occasion.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 10/11/2011 00:03

Well I thought I was funny! Grin

SimulationStation · 10/11/2011 00:04

You are Saggy! You are!

LapsedPacifist · 10/11/2011 00:05

YABU. No such thing as ghosts. Honest.

Solo · 10/11/2011 00:06

YANBU, there are definitely ghosts around.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 10/11/2011 00:14

Grin I definitely believe BTW.

SimulationStation · 10/11/2011 00:15

I like to believe it.

Why do I read these threads?!Confused
We were house sitting for friends and took our dog. He used to sit in the kitchen, staring at the hallway (where there was a hatch to the cellar, it used to be a pub). When they came back with their dog, both dogs sat and stared, all night, every night. It was weird! Sure there was something supernatural going on but the house always felt friendly IYSWIM?

Solo · 10/11/2011 00:23

There would be no reason to expect that any ghost wouldn't be friendly. I lived in a haunted 1935 built house for 10 years. It was great. I've had some stuff happen in this one too, but nowhere near how the other one was...nothing really sinister in either place though.

Primafacie · 10/11/2011 00:24

Moodykat, maybe they could just hear a mouse, dogs have excellent hearing.

Moodykat · 10/11/2011 00:26

Yes, maybe! Am a bit ashamed that didn't even cross our minds! It really is very easy to believe what you want to believe isn't it? Blush

IronOrchid · 10/11/2011 00:28

Primafacie - that couldn't possibly be the reason. Far too sensible (and plausible). Must have been supernatural :P

IronOrchid · 10/11/2011 00:29

Sorry, Moodykat - feel a right nob now!

SolidGoldVampireBat · 10/11/2011 00:29

Well, look at it this way (to prevent an epidemic of wet beds among the more gullible of you), despite at least a century and a half of people doing all sorts of really open-minded experiments to try and discover proof of ghosts existing, they haven't found any such proof. And even if that's because no one has so far invented a smellow-detector, even though electricity existed before anyone worked out how to use it to power a computer and all that, what there has certainly never been any proof of is 'ghosts' actually doing anyone any harm.
So while there is absolutely no very very little likelihood of there being any thing invisible, inaudible, intangible and immeasurable in your house OP, should there be something that, in another 50 years time, someone works out a way of demonstrating the existence of, it still won't have done you any harm whatsoever. So sleep tight.

Moodykat · 10/11/2011 00:30

That's ok! Grin

IronOrchid · 10/11/2011 00:30

I invented the smellow-detector - I have proof, dammit!

CheerfulYank · 10/11/2011 03:37

Even if there is, it won't hurt you. :)

I wish I had teeny tiny mouse-sized hippos. Can you imagine ickle hippos running around? Beyond cute.

QuintessentialShadow · 10/11/2011 13:09

Tiffany it is the powers evoked by symbols that do the deeds, not the symbol itself. I know that often jewish families with haunted houses go to either CofE or Catholic priests, because the jews in general dont believe in such phenomena, so they dont have exorcism rituals like "us". That is what I have heard though, cant guarantee it to be true.

But I do think people believe in the stuff they are brought up to believe exist, or fear. And if you have grown up in a culture where ghosts are not even mentioned, you would not recognize a ghost even if it jumped out and shouted "BOO!" at you. Wink

Maybe it is all in your mind, manifesting in unusual ways. Electric currents and what not. It is a spiritual thing, not a factual thing, though, isnt it?
