DH obv think I am AIBU but we live in a cottage built in 1856 and the incidents so far:

Hearing footsteps on stairs thinking it's our DCs only to find them fast asleep. Happens a lot!

DCs special 'taggies' (comfort blanket) disappearing for days, only to reappear in really obvious places we have looked at before.

DD's electric toothbrush turning itself on at 3 am in the morning. Bzzzzzz.

A friend convinced she saw a Childs face peering through our bannisters. DCs def in bed at the time.

DD 5yrs old saying 'who is the little boy that came to stay last night?' No little boy was staying!

I dont know. Possibly some could be explained but the toothbrush and footsteps freaks me out! Even DH has heard them, checked kids who are fast asleep and stated 'that's weird'.

CocoPopsAddict · 09/11/2011 23:10

How do people know that ghosts don't exist?

I have lived in a house that was haunted. Just because you haven't had experience of ghosts yourself, doesn't mean they definitely don't exist. You should keep an open mind.

OP...yes, possibly. If it bothers you, you could get your local vicar round to bless the place? I know some people who have done that.

needanewname · 09/11/2011 23:11

You've got nothing to lose by trying it! Good luck

Or Heaven for all Mankind...

worraliberty · 09/11/2011 23:17

It's down to people to prove they exist if they categorically insist they do

It's not down to people to prove they don't

I could say the colour 'smellow' exists and I'm sure the first thing on people's lips would be "Ok Worra, prove it"

SimulationStation · 09/11/2011 23:18

A very pale yellow Worra?

OP posts:
worraliberty · 09/11/2011 23:20

It could be Silver, mauve and yellow....I dunno Grin

IneedAbetterNickname · 09/11/2011 23:21

If you believe in ghosts, then maybe you do have one! I also agree talk to 'it'. My Dad got married in the summer, and the lights at the meal kept flickering. My Auntie (Dads sister) shouted , 'Yes OK Dad, we know you are here, and that you approve, now let us eat'. The lights didnt flicker again, could be coincidence, or could have been Gramps!

CocoPopsAddict · 09/11/2011 23:21

worraliberty

Sadly that sounds like an unwashed yellow to me! Haha.

I understand the 'need to prove it does exist' point. I just don't like people stating that things categorically don't exist. It's more like, no one has proven that they exist. But it is possible they might. I think that applies in the case of ghosts.

You need to walk around every room with olive oil (preferably blessed by a priest) and draw with oil a coss (like in a holy cross, crucifix) on every well, blessing each wall while you say this is my house and my room and that you are the master of the house and the room. You start at the top and work yourself to the door of the house, before you finally banish little ghost and draw a cross on both sides of the door. I hope you own the cottage. Otherwise ask your landlord to do this.

Cabrinha · 09/11/2011 23:30

Otherwise ask your landlord to do it?
I would LOVE to listen into that conversation!
"yes, olive oil - preferably blessed".
And anyway, what's that about? Either it should be blessed or not, surely?

QuintessentialShadow · 09/11/2011 23:32

Ideally, her local vicar should come and do it!

Not sure how she would go up to her priest and say "Excuse me, would you mind blessing this bottle of Tesco Finest Olive oil for me?"

In case she doesnt have the guts to do that, she can give it a go with normal bog-standard unblessed olive oil and see if it works.

comedycentral · 09/11/2011 23:42

Argh! Why did I click on this thread? I am sad in a dark nursery soothing my teething son. I belueve you by the way, I reckon ghosts could exist. I have stated on a past thread that I thought my Nana's house was haunted when I was a child.

comedycentral · 09/11/2011 23:42

*believe rather!

QuintessentialShadow · 09/11/2011 23:42

I am not joking, by the way. My tone is humorous, but I am not joking.

LotteryWinnersOnAcid · 09/11/2011 23:47

HardCheese, my vibrator DID once get turned on by an old ghost of ours at around 5am one morning. I was staying at DP's and my flatmate heard a racket coming from my room - she said it was like a lawnmower. She finally worked up the balls to go in there and realised it was coming from a drawer, in which was my vibrator happily buzzing away. Grin

Strange thing is at the time I was SURE I had removed the batteries to use for something else. I didn't tell her this, she was already so freaked out.

BustersOfDoom · 09/11/2011 23:47

My GP's house was haunted but only upstairs, which was a terrifying place when I was a child. I still shudder at the though of it and the house wasn't that old, it was built in about 1920.

But yes you could try an exorcism. Both the Catholic and CofE churches do this. A former colleague of mine's father, who was a regular CofE parish vicar was the diocese exorcist. We did think that he was winding us up until the local paper did an article about him and his 'extra' duties. The churches might not advertise it but they certainly do it.

comedycentral · 09/11/2011 23:50

Eww lotto maybe someone else had been messing with it as you say you were sure you took out the batteries.....
