by 'you all' I mean anyone who shops in the high street store in which i work. which is probably quite a few of you. If you pick something up from a rail in the shop, DON'T DRAPE IT OVER THE RAIL INSTEAD OF PUTTING IT BACK WHERE YOU GOT IT. if you insist on trying on the full allocation of garments, don't you dare hand me a big crumpled pile of fabric and a fistful of hangers and expect me to rehang it for you. YOU HAVE HANDS. If you bring things to the cash desk inside out, don't tut and give me dirty looks when I scan and fold them inside out. and do not dump a pile of clothes on the cash desk, and as I pick up each item to scan, say "hmm I don't want that one actually", leaving it for me to rehang and retag and put back on the shop floor.

i hear you op

i use to like people until i started working in retail Smile

somedayma · 09/11/2011 21:56

I had never considered not rehanging before I worked there! I have never thought 'oh I took these clothes off to try them on, but I will dump them in a heap'. I would be embarrassed to do that!

FYI, we really DO appreciate it when customers make an effort! I would actually prefer it if people gave me things to rehang and were friendly and treated me as sthing more than a robot. Rather than flouncing past and refusing to speak to me

I rehang, but I often see the assistant re-rehanging, because it's much harder to me to do it properly (all daft ribbon loops on right, all buttons done up correctly) etc in a tiny cubicle while getting dressed and with other bags etc around than it is for them to do it when they know how it should go and have the space to sort it out properly. So I'm not sure it saves them any work, really.

TuftyFinch · 09/11/2011 21:56

unconscionable Mrs Distinctly that's my new favorite word now.

SleepyFergus · 09/11/2011 21:57

I agree with TuftyFinch.

As for taking a shit in the changing rooms, clearly that's gross. But some changing rooms in some major high street stores leave A LOT to be desired, it's perhaps no wonder.

Familydilemma · 09/11/2011 21:57

Usually I have one or other dc with me and by the time we leave (not frequent shopping trips these days) I feel pretty sure that putting clothes on hangers would be preferable to us hanging Wink around longer to do it myself.

pictish · 09/11/2011 21:57

I have had the clothes shop job, so always rehang.
I have waitressed, so always stack our dishes at the end of a meal.
I am aware because I've done it - those who aren't, don't.

Either way, no-one actually has to.

Love it. Customer Service staff of the world unite.

You don't pay my wages. We all pay each others' wages. It's called the economy, stupid.

And British customer service is bad because people in these jobs are treated like shit, like it is the lowest, brain-dead job you can do. Not something to take pride in. It's a vicious circle so yes, some customer service is pretty bad. But be nice, people, you'd be amazed what nice things happen if you are.

somedayma · 09/11/2011 21:59

Sleepyfergus, did you actually just say that? It's no wonder people shit in public changing rooms? Are you...kidding? Because i don't understand how that's ever ever ok

TuftyFinch · 09/11/2011 22:00

Sleepyfergus (I love your name) and the clever MrsDistinctly shall we go to a boot sale?

Familydilemma · 09/11/2011 22:01

I hear you Pictish-I am always on time for pick up and drop off at school and buy nice teacher gifts!

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 09/11/2011 22:02

blonderedhead, but the fact remains that the customer does pay your wages. If not enough customers shop in a store it will be closed.

that's simple economics I'm afraid.

This is sounding like I'm a bad customer apologist, and I'm not, really. What I was told in my early retail days is to treat the customer with positivity and respect and that most will mirror that behaviour.

If you treat anyone like the dirt on the bottom of your shoe they will respond with likewise discourtesy.

I've worked in a shop. I never gave a second thought about clearing up after customers. It was part of the job. And the stuff we sold was a damned site heavier than clothes!

TuftyFinch · 09/11/2011 22:03

BREAKING NEWS***

Footballers can wear toffees on Sunday!

That's what it just said on the news.

That's just great isn't it?

Familydilemma · 09/11/2011 22:03

I think I lack empathy so need to try out all jobs! Or read lots of mumsnet!

somedayma · 09/11/2011 22:04

I agree about people mirroring how they're treated which is why I try my best to be helpful, open and friendly. Is it REALLY so hard to reciprocate?

Tufty - autocorrect fail? Grin

MrBloomsNursery · 09/11/2011 22:05

somedayma - You do realise that is your job description? What do you want to do at work? Stand around chatting all day to your colleagues about Shaniqua's new nail extensions?

grumplestilskin · 09/11/2011 22:05

customers stacking plates their way is ANNOYING!

blackoutthesun · 09/11/2011 22:05

why would they want to wear toffee's? Smile

TuftyFinch · 09/11/2011 22:06

Familydilemma you are very welcome to try my job. Shall we have a massive job swap day?

Bagsy Zoo Keeper.

EmpireBiscuit · 09/11/2011 22:07

I do love waitrose - it's so shiny and clean

Familydilemma · 09/11/2011 22:08

So really, somedayma, it's about treating people with respect, appreciating what they do for you, but still making use of the services they offer? I'm with you on that. For all people in all jobs and circumstances. Never any excuse for rudeness, although it happens to the best of us occasionally.
