Kids recently had a week off - half term. They were back this week then, guess what - teacher training day. Seriously, what I want to know is this: is there ANY other job in the country where you get:

  • 13 paid weeks holiday a year
  • Good pay
  • Good pension (believe me, you do compared to people who do proper jobs in private sector - if you dont believe me, try it)
  • And yet you still need these extra days to do some training. Training for what, exactly? Seriously, for what???? And how am I, as a parent, supposed to factor childcare in here.
  • Oh, and you still do nothing but moan about pay, pensions etc
  • Rant over

Pipkins - I see much more labelling teachers as lazy than I do the others you listed which is probably why they very understandably get defensive and point out people are talking rubbish!

gaveitago · 05/11/2011 09:02

I apologise for not having read the whole thread but let me tell you a story to demonstrate the lack of understanding.
This week we had parent consoltations - 8.15 am was my first- the parent kindly said -thanks for coming in so early- I am in everyday at 7.30, I leave at 5.30- moist weekends I work.
I was a TA and if worked out at an hourly rate, I now earn far, far less but I love it- so nerrr

backwardpossom · 05/11/2011 09:02

I hope you don't work in science, pipkins - your hypotheses would be an hilarious read.

Everyone thinks they work hard. You just see more teachers defending themselves and telling the details of their jobs because they are the ones getting bashed, laying themselves open to martyrdom and whining accusations. How many times do you see a thread dedicated to knocking accountants or firemen? If you did, anyone linked would come on and defend themselves. Teachers aren't starting threads to have a moan, they are just responding to criticism with a little realism.

I really don't get why this is so hard to understand.

Blimey Pipkins, you are desperate to criticise aren't you! You were picking on Life in an earlier post for not putting her son first...she can't win!

VictorianIce

A winky face would have been fab. Thanks!

Sirzy · 05/11/2011 09:06

And anyone with an ounce of common sense would agree they work very hard in a very important job surely?

DownbytheRiverside · 05/11/2011 09:09

Why do people like NorfolkNChance work in the kind of school she's in?
Because a lot of those children have been failed by many and most of the people in their lives, often beginning with the ignorant, abusive and appalling individuals who bred them in the first place, and they need someone to try and help them cope and heal and become adults who will not go on to repeat their experiences as children in their lives as adults.
They need an education, and experience of adults who are interested in whether they change their life chances or not.
Someone has to give a fuck and try rather than tutting or hiding in fear from the ASBO teenager set. And in that case, it's NorfolkNChance.
Didn't bother joining in on this thread at first, it's the same old same old.
May your next week be better, Norfolk. Smile

i am a teacher who is tired of being a greedy drain on society

this thread has made me see the error of my ways i guess

i am 36; does anyone know if it is too late for me to retrain to input sales figures into spreadsheets? i really want to do something more meaningful and feel like i am giving something back

tia

NinkyNonker · 05/11/2011 09:10

She is happy doing her job, it is you determined to pick holes. Teachers don't want everyone to agree with them, just to show them the same respect afforded to most other professions and jobs.

Avantia · 05/11/2011 09:10

Teachers tend to have a bashing because its the main profession that most of us come into contact with - and their actions good or bad have a direct effect on us and our children .

Inset affect us because children aren't in school - so working parents have to deal with that.

Striking - effect us aswell.

Sometimes we think me me me and not actually about others .

I think teachers are OK and not with OP.

Lifeissweet · 05/11/2011 09:11

Oh blimey - Pipkin I do work in the holidays. Of course I do.

But as people are constantly pointing out, teachers get loads of holiday. I usually have DS in school with me for a week in the summer (he seems to quite enjoy it actually - lots of the teachers bring their DC in) and work in the evenings or on days when his Grandparents or father has him (he does have 2 parents)

I usually do my work on Sunday at the weekend, which given me Saturday. I don't think this is enough, but it is how it is.

I can't win can I?

CopperLocs · 05/11/2011 09:11

pipkins It's not a case of "woe is me, we have it so hard" it's a case of being made to defend yourself and your profession every other day.

footballmum · 05/11/2011 09:12

I'm a school governor and recently spent a morning shadowing a Year 1 teacher. Much respect-I couldn't do it. They earn every penny and I don't begrudge them any of it!

PGTip · 05/11/2011 09:12

Morebeta - I don't want my DC in school 9-5!! They work hard enough 9-3.15. They do a couple of afterschool activities & that is enough. I am lucky enough to be a SAHM & I know this is a huge factor in how I think. The teachers in my DC school work damn hard and are often still there at 7/8pm. Parents do expect schools to act as childcare to suit their own work lives, maybe if they went back to just teaching for a while we'd appreciate all the extras they actually do & not moan as much.

I do agree tho that the format of the academic needs some rethinking.

toptramp · 05/11/2011 09:13

OP- teaching is totally dealing with the harsh realities of life; your kids so that you lot don't have to home educate them. We have to deal with the results of shoddy parenting.
OP I suggest you do your PGCE if you think it's so cushty. What on earth is stopping you?

Irony of ironies, it's 9.15 on a Saturday morning and I'm about to make my way into school to catch up on planning.

Just sayin...

Sirzy · 05/11/2011 09:15

So they sit back and watch people slag off there proffession but have no right to respond?
