i know it is is controversal but i dont understand why some people feel the entitlement to get money for having children and aibu to think it should stop?

I think that if people want children then they should have them but they should not feel they are entitled for some kind of monetary hand out for having them

I especially feel like getting money for being pregnant like the sure start grant, maternity grant, healthy start vouchers ect should not happen because if you cant afford to have a child why should the goverment pay you to do this? what about the people who do not have any children and choose not to or can not why should they miss out on multiple grants and vouchers when they are paying more and more taxes to support the people who choose to have children and then choose not to work?

  • i have a dd and although i wanted a large family i could not afford to have more than one child so stopped but never claimed any grants ect because i did not want to be paid for being pregnant as it was my choice

My dad always says if they (my parents) had waited until they could afford children, I wouldn't exist Grin

I agree about the maternity grant and healthy start vouchers though. I was entitled to both with DS2, but didn't claim them.

YANBU.

But the alternative is child poverty unless we pay benefits in vouchers, and there is no way the leftie socialists will ever allow that to happen. Seems they don't believe in personal responsibility.

tethersend · 01/11/2011 20:59

All these people with a sense of entitlement to things they're entitled to.

Makes me sick.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/11/2011 20:59

Yes you are right - I know lets sterilise them too Hmm

OK I'm being facetious but surely you must realise that life doesn't always work out how we plan it. And being part of a civilised society means that we help those less fortunate.

And I suppose you will never claim a pension,or use health care,or claim any sort of benefit that the children of today will be paying for through tax?
Child poverty is more common than you think.

jkklpu · 01/11/2011 21:01

Is there a newspaper with some space to fill in the next few days?
If this op is for real, do you give back your child benefit?
Don't forget that today's children will be paying for tomorrow's pensioners. It's strongly in society's interest to have children and healthy children at that, so not unreasonable to make some contribution towards that goal. You're not for a minute trying to claim that the State covers all costs of anyone's children, are you?

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 21:02

Op, let me introduce you to these '........' they are called full stops!!

Do you get child benefit for your dd?

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 01/11/2011 21:02

You think most people have children for the money?

Honey, no.

Yes, there may be some silly people who decide to have kids for the stereotypical council house and life on benefits. I've personally known a couple.

But they are in the minority!

I don't think most people feel entitled to money and I don't think they have children in order to get money.

Pet - you do know that if that was the case, you can make more money fostering than you can having your own children, right?

But there is nothing wrong with a system that supports parents to bring up the next generation of workers and taxpayers.

Think of it as an investment.

Earthdog · 01/11/2011 21:03

In an ideal World I agree with you; having children is a lifestyle choice and the Government doesn't fund my non-child related hobbies! But in the real World poor people with children have to be supported, fact. I would like to see some sort of carrot (rather than stick) approach to discouraging breeding though as the Uk is over populated.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/11/2011 21:03

People are being GIVEN money to have CHILDREN?

Well I flipping never.

Oh, and Hello. Get stuck in, we're a friendly bunch.

She winds them up and lets them go.....

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 21:04

She's not going to come back to this is she?

BumWiper · 01/11/2011 21:05

Instead of sterilising them ban them from sex altogether.Have an inspector to drop in and make sure the chastity belts are well locked and they have seperate beds.

splashymcsplash · 01/11/2011 21:05

This will not end well OP

crazynanna · 01/11/2011 21:05

Is this your first post? Oh dear...

KatAndKit · 01/11/2011 21:06

Hardly anyone gets the sure start grant. You have to be living on benefits and it has to be your first child. Do you suggest the person on the dole who is pregnant just forgoes buying a pram and cot and car seat?

The health in pregnancy grant has been abolished.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the free vitamins for pregnant women. You can get folic acid free on prescription anyway.

It's a shame that the scheme seems to promote the use of infant formula from birth but that is a whole other debate. if the rest of it encourages some people to actually give their kids some proper fruit and veg then some good will come from it. If you find yourself on jobseekers allowance (and you might not have been in that position when you first had the child) then it would be hard to provide a good diet on that sort of money.

OhDoAdmit · 01/11/2011 21:06

I am off to get pregnant right now!

'OH...Brace yourself!'

I was well off before I had kids. It was the kids who fucked it all up. So the benefits are just a little compensation for my tattered life.

DirtyBat · 01/11/2011 21:08

Oh yes, my first thought upon finding out I was pregnant was "ooh think of the money!".
